Title: Irish / Lancashire brick wall
Post by: plimmerian on Sunday 03 May 09 12:03 BST (UK)
IGI birth
09th January 1865 at Dundalk, Louth, Ireland
of Andrew CONNOR son of John and Ellen (nee GARVEY)

But then in 1871 census at Cobden Sq, Newton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire I find:
William NAYLOR hd 22 lab b. Ashton
Ellen NAYLOR wf 24 b. Ireland
*Mary E. NAYLOR dau 3mths b. Newton
Andrew CONNOR step-son 6 scholar b. Ireland
with WYATT family
(*Mary E. NAYLOR must be Ellen NAYLOR copied in error from Mary E. WYATT 3 yrs)

The marriage certificate of the above couple states Ellen as CONNOR (widow) with father listed as GARVEY.

Then in 1881 at Gas St, Newton In Makerfield, Lancs:
Ellen NAYLOR hd (widow) 33 washwoman gen serv b. Ireland
Andrew NAYLOR son 16 bottle maker appren b. Ireland
Ellen NAYLOR dau 10 scholar b. Newton
Alice NAYLOR dau 7 scholar b. Newton
William NAYLOR son 5 scholar b. Newton

Ellen (widow) NAYLOR went on to marry James POWELL of Ireland in 1884 at St Mary’s and St John’s Catholic Church, Newton In Makerfield, Lancs. Her father is listed as HARVEY.

In 1891 at 31 Derby St, Newton In Makerfield, Lancs the family looks like this:
James POWELL hd 49? lab b. Ireland
Ellen POWELL wf 44 b. Ireland
Alice POWELL single 17 b. Newton le Willows
James POWELL son 11 b. Newton le Willows
Frank? POWELL son 6 b. Newton le Willows
*Richard NAYLOR g-son 1 b. Newton le Willows
(*son of Thomas & Ellen NAYLOR nee NAYLOR at 41 Gas St)

There is no trace of Andrew CONNOR / Andrew NAYLOR after 1881. I can't find him in any of the later census or in the GRO index, he seems to have completely disappeared.

Any suggestions welcome, thank you!

What about the Andrew Naylor who married Cecilia Hall in June Q 1885?  I can't find them in 1891 or 1901 census, they may have emigrated or gone back to Ireland or died before 1891?

Added; can't find deaths for either of these before 1910

hi

thanks - a possibility but as it's a West Riding of Yorkshire marriage - I'm not sure!

I am beginning to wonder if Andrew CONNOR (aka NAYLOR) did return to Ireland before 1891!?!

Best wishes,

Ian.

You could look for this Andrew Naylor and Cecilia Hall separately in 1881.  If you find them in W Yorks, then this probably won't be your man.

You could also look for your Andrew on Irish 1901/1911 census or look on shipping lists to US/NZ/Aus - I think they're on Findmypast

I'll give it a go and keep you posted!

best wishes,

Ian.

Found an Andrew NAYLOR age 37 b. Hunslet (in 1881 Barnsley) with wife Mary Ann NAYLOR age 38 b. Leeds.

Can't find a good match for Cecilia HALL though.

Did find a death of Mary Ann NAYLOR in Dec qua 1884, Barnsley aged 42.

Guessing this Andrew NAYLOR remarried the Cecilia HALL possibly?!?!?

Found the will of Andrew O'Connor - died in Chester in 1932, requesting burial with his mother in Newton le Willows.

Listing his children in the will helped me find the family in 1911 at 5 Percy Street, Chester-

Andrew O'Connor   43 born Louth, Dundalk, Ireland
Elizabeth O'Connor   36 born Liverpool

Mary Winifride O'Connor   11 born Widnes
Eileen O'Connor   8 born Widnes

Terence (Patrick) O'Connor   7 born Chester
Anthony (Malachy Vincent) O'Connor   4 born Chester
Kathleen (Moninnia) O'Connor   3 born Chester
Sheila (Bridgeen) O'Connor   1 born Chester

and a marriage in 1898 in district of Prescot, Lancashire, England (Register Office or Registrar Attended) O'CONNOR   Andrew to HEPTONSTALL Elizabeth

but still can't locate them in 1901 (Widnes)

argh  ???

on Elizabeth O’Connor’s death cert it lists her usual address as 84 Lugsdale Road Widnes, her husband Andrew of same address signed it

1901 lists a Sadler family
1911 lists an Adams family

No. 86 could be a public house run by a Mr Whittaker in both census

still no closer to finding Andrew in 1901 - bah!
