Title: MARGEYs to San Francisco, CA
Post by: DoireM on Sunday 03 May 09 23:32 BST (UK)
Looking for relatives of three brothers who left Clunelly, Inishowen, Co. Donegal, Ireland.  James Margey left in 1880.  Michael Margey left in 1883. and Rodger Margey in 1889.

Their parents were Henry and Hannah (Friel) Margey and their 4 other siblings;  Susan, Bernard, Mary and Patrick.

DoireM.

Doire:

Do you already have their information from census returns (while in the States)?  If not, may I ask their dates of birth, please?

I see Robert and James on the 1920 census, but perhaps you already have that information?

Hello Lisa and thanks for replying to my request.

The information that these 3 brothers went to San Francisco came from a change in ownership of land to their brother Patrick.  I do not have any information of the Census records in the States.  I do not know James or Michael's year of birth but I found Rodger's bapt date which is June 5, 1864.  I assume around 1860's or early 1870's for James and Michael's birth!!

Regards,
DoireM

Living next door to James Margey is:
Roger Margey, age 52 years, immigrated 1888, born Ireland as were parents, Marine Fireman, Ship Co.
Wife, Mary, immigrated 1888, born Ireland as were parents, no occupation.
Boarder, John McDeid?, age 53, immigrated 1888, born Ireland as were parents, Marine Fireman, Ship Co.

Actually, looking at the house number, they could have been living in the same house.  It looks like James lived at 236B? and Roger was 236.  I believe the street was 27th.  I believe it was "Street" (rather than Avenue).

Margey, dau of James....born 1896
Margey, son of James...born 1894
I don't know anything about this site, but records can be ordered.
There may be a way of obtaining the record without a cost associated with it.
Also, the person on Ancestry may be able to give you the same information.

They are listed in the 1890 San Francisco directory here as Margy:  http://www.sfgenealogy.com/php/dbs/1890sfd.php?page=869

Michael & Rodger are in the 1907 city directory here:  http://www.sfgenealogy.com/php/dbs/1907sfd.php?page=527

James' son Rodger appears to be in the California death index with a death date of 26 Nov. 1940.  You can see it at rootsweb.com.  There's also a Patrick Margey there - perhaps that was the cousin listed above.

Hi DoireM,

I have recently put a link on the USA resources board which has San Francisco newspapers on line.
http://www.loc.gov/chroniclingamerica/index.html

You may find something on the family you are looking for .

When I quickly looked for you under Michael the death announcement was there for his wife Alice (Bassett).

Hello Cathy,

On the newspapers site I found 23 items with the Margey surname.  I was on the 9th article when I got closed off.  I retried and got this message!!   "This US Government system is restricted by law to authorized, official use only."

Sorry Cathy, it turned out that the site closed down for updates.  I tried a few hours later and was able to access the remaining items.

Thanks for all your help.

Hi DoireM,
Here is a link to a website that has many early California newspapers.
https://cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc?a=q&l=en&leqX=&oa=1&src=
If you use "advertisements" to specify what you are looking for, it will come up with births, marriages and deaths. It's a great tool for early San Francisco research!
Good luck. Sheila

Hello Timothy,

Great to hear from you!

I am the descendant of Michael's sister Susan Margey.  Michael, James and Rodger (three brothers) left Donegal and settled in San Francisco.  I have done extensive research on the Margey line.  I did find the newspaper clipping with details of Harry Margey's tragic death.  So Harry would of been named after Michael and Susan's father Henry Margey and his wife was Hannah Friel Margey.

Thanks again for making contact.

Regards,
Marie

Howdy!

I wanted to send a PM, but apparently you have to have 3 posts first...

I’m also a Michael Margey descendant and it looks like my uncle beat me to this thread.

Earlier in the thread it mentioned that Michael and Alice were in an online tree, and that might have been because of me as I made an online version of my tree back in ‘07.

Greetings from Houston area Texas!

Sorry to be so late to the party! I see this thread started over a decade ago.

My grandfather Harry, that my uncle mentioned above (his dad), the grandson of Michael Margey, passed away April 2, 2018.

I'm the oldest of the 4 grandkids, 3 by my mom, 1 by my uncle.

So assembling the data, I guess we are somewhere along the lines of fourth cousins. Hopefully I can think of a good third post to make since I'd like to know additional information you may have on Michael Margey's dad, and especially if you have ancestry above Michael's parents. Before this thread, I only knew his mom's maiden name from the death certificate info.

No don't apologise, always great to hear from cousins.  So sorry to hear of your grandfather's passing.  I would be delighted to share Margey information with you.  I can go back two generation's from your Michael.  Still Margeys''s living in the ancestral parish in Donegal, Ireland  Have you done a DNA test?

I did through myAncestry since that’s the site I’ve used since forever on the digital copy of my tree.

I got 62.4% North and West European (lots of German, especially on my fathers side) and 37.6% Irish Scottish and Welsh. I’ve got a Welsh Surname.

I was sad I didn’t get anything random on the DNA test since I already knew I was pretty German and Irish.

I have attached a picture of Michael Margey Grave marker.  I had though his brother Rodger Margey was buried in the family plot, but reading the other post above, it maybe James' son Rodger buried in the family plot since his death may have been unexpected and the plot was already established for Michael's wife Alice.  Rodger death is noted 1940 at the top of stone; and that matched the date of James son's death. Michael Margey was my Great Grandfather. If anyone knows the death of Michael's brother Rodger, it may solve the question.
