Hope you don't mind if I add this Spidermonkey:
From the other thread:
Of the 192 Australians believed buried at Pheasant Wood, Fromelles, quite a number were originally born in the UK. Although a few emigrated with their immediate families, many listed their next of kin as still residing in various parts of the UK.
If anyone is able to assist with locating descendants who may still reside in the UK, we would be exceptionally grateful to hear from you.

Don't know whether this will be of use in finding a descendant but there is a Albert George Pheasant on the El Uruguayo, returning to Plymouth in May 1916 from Argentina. He gives his address as 4 Barry Avenue, Stamford Hill.
-
Walter's father had the unusual middle name of Farnell. There's a couple of trees with a Richard Farnell Pheasant in, but no recent activity on them
Edited to add: have sent an email to someone with RFP in their tree. One of the hardest emails that I have ever had to write - just couldn't find the words to say what I meant :-\
-
Hi SpiderMonkey
I have just sent the following message to various GR members. Twas not easy, but within a couple of hours, one reply back already, and tis for a possible contact for Walter!
This is the "gist" of my outgoing message: (In this instance I had searched for Walter's Dad) but I have done it on several of the other lads too.
Hello, there, I notice you have Richard listed on your tree. Are you aware if his son undertook military service during WW1. Perhaps he was the Walter that various people are researching as it may be he was in the Australian Army and served in France during WW1.
I am not related to him, I am aware though that his name is included in a list of men that are currently being researched in anticipation of making contact with descendants. Please consider checking out the Fromelles website http://www.fromelles.net/
Please let me know if I am right or wrong in thinking this may be your lad.
-
Oh well done! Hopefully this will yield some results. Shall we consider this one to be on hold for the time being (just so that the same descendants don't get thousands of emails ;)). If our contacts don't work out, then we can always start looking again.
On to the next one!
-
Hi SpiderMonkey,
I have sent pm to Sandra, but I think this thread for Walter Pheasant should stay wide open, as I sent to all the GR contacts I could see, in hope that someone on the direct line would reply. So far the one who has responded is connected via marriage.
But, if you start a new thread for one of the other lads, my OH and I will try to help there too.
Just Moi.
-
Definitely should stay open - I didn't mean this thread to be locked, just that I would leave it for the time being to see if any of the contacts responded and we'd struck gold.

Bit More
I have re-read the info sent to me, and realise that the ship to Canada was Laurentic, - J Mathias White Star Dominion Montreal, Canada
Hoping that helps, just need to get Walter from Canada to NSW.
Just Moi.
-
Bit More,
The contact who gave me the info re Walter's voyage to Canada has confirmed that he was son of Richard Farnell Pheasant.
That contact intends joining rootschat shortly, so perhaps there will be more information and genie clues and DNA clues too.
Still trying to get him from Canada to NSW.
Just Moi.
-
Hi I am the contact for Just Moi
I have Richard Pheasant in my tree. Richard's brother John Farnell Pheasant married one of my Thynne line.
I have some further ideas to track relatives. I could put out a thread onGR and on Curious Fox.

I have now posted a thread on the Trying to find Message Board.
Now who should I put anyone in contact with?
-
Hi LadyKira,
There's fedelmer on this thread who has the fromelles missing database and would be the best person to contact. (I have snipped the quote, but it is found in full earlier on this thread). You can send her a pm by clicking on the button under her avatar and following the prompts. Again, thank you for following up on our initial contact with you through the commercial site. JM.

I have had a reply from some one doing Canada lookups as below
re your walter pheasant
the walter on the 1913 passenger lists I dont think is the same one as being killed in action is 1915 as he is on the 1916 canadian census
and the note say he went to australia aged 17 yet his age on the canadian passenger list is 19
anyway
this is the details i have found for the walter who travelled to canada

RootsChat must deal with any breach of copyright by its members.
For some time the team of Copyright Editors has been removing breaches of copyright and sending detailed personal messages to the member that had posted the information. Due to the volume of posts and members this is now impractical. Messages in breach will simply be deleted and this notice posted. We apologise for any inconvenience caused but are sure you will appreciate the importance of this issue.
So back to the drawing board on that one
oops! Suffice it to say That the one who went to Canada has been disproved as he is still there in a later census.

Bit More,
Not sure, but possible arrival in NSW on 15 June 1911 - a Mr W Pheasant, ex the Mamari which had left the UK from the Port of London.
We will try to find further info about that voyage and edit this post shortly.
EDIT 1
The Mamari was built 1904. 5627 tons. Shaw Savill Line. Is this another vessel that may have been part of an immigration plan sending young men from Britain to the Dominions? Not sure but .....

I've had a look at the updated Australian priority list and see this man is still on their list. I am reasonably certain I can find an mDNA connection for him if that is still required (famous last words) but it looks as if his sisters had daughters
Best,
Howdie
-
I am now very certain that I can find an mt DNA descendant for this man but am getting no response to my query of whether this labour (of many hours) is still required
Howard
-
I have had a phone call from his niece who is willing to assist the Australian MOD with their project.
Best,
Howard
-
Hi, I am a Pheasant descendant living in Australia but am not sure whether our branch is connected to this Walter Pheasant who died at Fromelles. Is there a living descendant who wouldn't mind chatting via email to try and see what possible connections there may be? There are very few of us in Australia although many families in England. Our branch can be traced back to Bedfordshire.
Thanks!
-
Hello Molly
Welcome to Rootschat :D
You're best bet would be to talk to Tim and Sandra at the Australian Fromelles Descendants website
The link to the fromelles database has been removed whilst we locate the new website link 2019 http://web.archive.org/web/20100409162945/http://www.fromelles.net
What they don't know about the families probably isn't worth knowing.

Thanks spof, I'll have a go.

This is the first time I have used this site!
I am a relative of Walter Pheasant, his father Richard Farnell Pheasant is the younger brother of my great grandfather, John Farnell Pheasant.
Two of Walter's counsins were also killed in WW1, both in France.
Albert Edward Pheasant d.16.8.1917, Tyne Cot Memorial
Henry Farnell Pheasant d. 12.11.1916, Thiepval Memorial.
Unfortunately my research into the family tree a few years ago concentrated on my great grandfather, John.
I understand that Walter Pheasant is one of the soldiers buried in Pheasant Wood, is this correct?
-
Hi there, great to hear from you. Yes Walter Pheasant is one of those buried (appropriately) at Pheasant Wood. I understand his remains have been identified and re-buried. I have not been able to establish a connection from our Pheasant family to his (yours) as yet so it may be either non-existent or further back along the family tree!
Our Pheasants came from the Billington, Bedfordshire area in England and my great-grandfather, George Pheasant, left England at 17 and moved to South Africa. Eventually he married and then travelled to NZ for some years and finally Australia where he pioneered a farm in the Millaa Millaa region of North Queensland.
George Pheasant came from a very large family, however, and I am not certain of all their movements and their ancestors' prior to that time (around 1897). I know I came across the Farnell Pheasants during some of my earlier research.
if you think there may be a connection or would like help researching please feel free to contact me again as I have quite a bit of info about various Pheasants from some years' research.
-
Hello Spof,
I am trying to locate the new website for the fromelles project but am struggling, have you any idea on what it maybe ?
