i should have looked harder - just checked an road atlas and couldn't find them :-[
thanks for that Wendy
i assume (dangerous i know) that if someone is described as of somewhere, ie Davies of Noyadd, it means where they live but not necessarily where they were born?
-
You're welcome
It's very hard not to assume when you get info but that is one of the rules of genealogy. At least we check info ;D ;D

Hi
Trebarried is shown on the OS map about 8 miles to the north of Brecon, just west of the village of Bronllys. It is shown on the map as an historic site, and there is indication that it was a court or hall at one time. I know that somewhere in the area is also a property known as Trebarried Mill, which might be part of the same complex. If you need the grid co-ordinates, let me know and I'll look them up for you.

thanks greensleeves - as you may have seen i've just come across an ancestor, William Davies of Trebarried, and am looking for any other information. if you could let me have the grid coordinates that would be great.

Hi Bean
The grid ref for Trebarried Mill and the adjacent buildings is:

Hi Bean
I don't know if the plaque below is of interest to you. I know it doesn't refer to the family names you gave in your earlier post, but it does mention Trebarried. It is on the gable of an almshouse in Hay-on-Wye.

Greensleeves

Hi there.
My friends live at Trebarried Court.
It consists of the very large (and currently for sale) Trebarried Hall.

My friends live in one of the houses that are in the courtyard which I believe were originally stables and outbuildings. Their house is also for sale!

You can see the courtyard in the picture.
Trebarried Mill also (would you believe!) has just gone on sale.

The word Trebarried means "Three Bars" or “Bars Dwelling” possibly in reference to gates and not the sort at which you drink!
The word Noyadd is related to the Welsh word Neuadd which simply means “Hall” or “Mansion House”.
So the root of the surnames are obviously from the places and there are many instances of this in Wales.
Some were historically named after the place in which they lived.
Some were named for their livelihood (e.g. Dai the Undertaker) or particular physical attributes such as Twm Tal (Tall Tom).
Hope this helps!

Sorry - I also meant to say that Trebarried Hall and Court are adjacent.
Trebarried Mill is about one mile away across the main A470 road between Brecon and Hay-on-Wye.
Lovely area - so glade to live here!
