Title: Elspet Adams and John Simpson
Post by: chezem on Tuesday 12 May 09 06:11 BST (UK)
Hi everyone,

I'm hoping that someone may have some information on my 4 x great, grandparents John Simpson and Elspet Adams. I have found the death record for Elspet Adams and she died on 5th April 1845. The record said that she was 68 so she was probably born in 1777. She died in Elgin, Moray, Scotland and her husband John Simpson died sometime before 1841. I think she was born in Fordyce, Banff, Scotland. The death record says that John Simpson was from Elgin, Moray, Scotland so I presume he died there also. He may also have come from Fordyce but I dont know really. They had at least one daughter Jane born around 1805/6. I have found her christening record that says she was christened on 17 July 1809 in St. Nicholas Church, Aberdeen. The death record for Elspet Adams says that she is buried in the Cathedral Church Yard at Elgin, Moray. Their daughter Jane migrated to Australia with her husband Alexander Walker Davidson and their children.  Any information on Elspet Adams or John Simpson would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Cheryl

Little to add.  You've obviously found the Libindex website.  With the Banff connection there is also the ch. below to a couple of the same name - from the IGI.  I take t you've checked the free wills search on Scotlands people to see if a will was left for John Simpson.

JAMES SIMPSON OR SIMSON  Ch: 20 AUG 1814 Episcopal, Portsoy, Banff, Scotland

Hi Steve,

Yes I've checked both those places. Thanks for the info on James. He definitely looks like a son of Elspet and John.

Have you managed to find Elspet on the 1841 census?
Do you know any more about John such as his profession, or an address?

There is a very useful map of Elgin from the period they were living there which shows from actual survey the properties and who owned them. There is a Mr Simpson on the north side of the High Street.

Hi Kirsty,

Yes. I've just located her on the 1841 census with a Marjory Adams and a Leslie family.  On checking on Marjory Adams I find that she was 11 years older and must be her sister. I had another look at the Church burial register and noticed that the entry after Elspets is Marjory Adams. Apparently they both died on the same day and were buried on the same day. Maybe some sort of family tragedy. They were all living in a house in High Street so your map was very helpful. It certainly shows how few families lived in an area.  I can find the Leslie family on the 1851 census at a different address then they disappear completely and don't appear on any more. Haven't found anything on John Simpson yet but he was a seaman. And he was dead before their daughter Jane left for Australia in late 1840 as the ship records indicate that her father was dead and her mother was still alive.

Thanks for your help.

Cheryl

Hi Cheryl,

I don't have any further information on Elspet and John unfortunately, but as I am also Elspet and John's great-great-great-great grandchild, I too am keen to find out more about them. I am descended from John and Elspet through their second daughter Margaret Ellen Leslie and found out the information through the Monaro Pioneers website.

I hope to keep in touch and if you find anything out keep us in the loop.

Regards,

Michael Davis

Which Leslie family was she with?

There was the Leslie family that Elspet and James's second daughter Margaret Helen Simpson married into, that I'm descended from Forfarian.

James Dunbar Leslie (b. 11/10/1801 in New Duffes, Morayshire, Scotland - d. 28/8/1890 in Bombala, NSW) was the son of William Leslie and Margaret Leslie (nee Mason) and married Margaret Helen Simpson on the 9th of August 1829 in St. Nicholas' Church, Aberdeen, Scotland.

James and Margaret Leslie are my Great-great-great-grandparents through their youngest daughter (and youngest child) Elspeth Brownlie (nee Leslie).

Ah yes, got them now. For some reason I can't now find them in FreeCEN, though my records suggest that that is where I did originally find them. James Dunbar Leslie and Margaret Helen Simpson and family who emigrated to New South Wales in about 1853. No wonder chezem couldn't find them after 1851.

William died in 1845: : "Died at New Duffus on the 6th ult, Mr William Leslie, tailor, aged 73." [Forres, Elgin and Nairn Gazette, 3 May 1845] and on the basis of his age I speculate that he was the son of Alexander Leslie and Jean Forsyth. However the absence of an Alexander among their descendants must throw some doubt on this. I cannot connect them to my Leslie family.

Where did you find out about Alexander Leslie and Jean Forsyth? The Monaro Pioneers website does not go back that far unfortunately, but does state that my Great-great-grandmother Elspeth Brownlie (nee Leslie) was born in Aberdeen in 1852 (16/5/1852)

As I said, speculation. Alexander and Jean had four recorded children, all born in New Spynie, in 1764, 1770, 1772 and 1775. There is a gap between 1764 and 1770 long enough for two more children, and William's death at age 73 in 1845 would fit him neatly into the gap. However I would need more evidence to be certain.
