It is an extract from William Brown Jeffrey's death certificate listing cause of death. So far I can read:
Fracture of the skull
and concussion(?) of the
brain caused by ??
?? ?? violent?
?? stone wall
by a horse while engaged
?? ?? deceased
?? ??
hour after the accident as
certified by Geo Henderson
surgeon ?? ??
deceased shortly ??
died 5th March 1859 and
was present when he died
Can you help me fill in the gaps? SP have already kindly re-scanned it so it must be a very poor original image.
Just a shame the parents/wife aren't named as I'm not 100% sure it is my man....
Thanks

Wow, quite a piece.
I have just had something deciphered by the other section I would paste it there. My grandfather suffered a contusion of the back, which meant a bruise. I would guess his brain was bruised. Sorry have not the eyes for the rest do post it here though. Or make a link and post there too.

I forgot about the other forum! ::) But have posted a link now so thank you!
Thanks Sue and Evie, that was quick :)
I think this is what we have so far:
Fracture of the skull
and contusion of the
brain caused by deceased
being dashed/clashed violently
against stone wall
by a horse while engaged
in breaking horse. Deceased
expired in about an
hour after the accident as
certified by Geo Henderson

Think we are almost there. Thank you very much!

Could the last part be "Surgeon to the inspector??"

I think you are right having looked at it again and again :)
In 1861 Scottish census there is a George Henderson living in the civil parish of Chirnside occupation, Gent Bacto Of Medican , whatever that means, never come across that description before.
Added: 1851 Census George described as Surgeon, Licentiate Of The Royal College Of Surgeons, Edinburgh

Hi,
I see all the hard work has been done but, for what it's worth, I believe it is 'concussion' with a long 's' followed by a short 's'
Fracture of the skull
and concussion of the
brain caused by deceas-
ed being dashed violent-
ly against a stone wall
by a horse while engaged
in breaking it in. deceas-
ed expired in about an
hour after accident as
certified by Geo. Henderson
Surgeon, Chirnside who saw
deceased shortly before he
died on 5th March 1859 and
was present when he died.

Wonderful stuff! Thank you all for your contributions, its appreciated! Especially to confirm George/Chirnside as a surgeon.
I didn't know sp did transcriptions, will bear that in mind for the future.
Thanks again!

Have you thought to try and find George on the 1861 census?
As a surgeon he might be a member of the Royal College or a graduate of Edinburgh Medical School.
