Hi

There are one or two farms in the Howes at Annan and on the Low Road towards Cummertrees there are one or two more.  They are all numbered from one and my pal lives at Number 5 which is along the road to Cummertrees.  I lived in that area for many years and as I am from a farming background knew a number of the farmers.  Who are you looking for?

The Howes was a big farm until the end of the first world war when, like many others throughout England and Scotland, it was split up into small holdings for the returning farmer's sons and farm workers who wanted to farm for themselves.  Unfortunately they were too small to support more than one couple and their young family and so the children had to find work elsewhere.  It did provide a stepping stone for quite a few people who moved on to bigger farms. I'm not really sure of which parish it was in as it could have been Cummertrees or Annan.
An uncle of mine farmed one of the holdings between the wars but the house on that holding has been pulled down and rebuilt as a bungalow and the farm buildings have disappeared as the land was taken over by another small holder.
Hope that helps
Boswells

Thanks for all that information.

I have solid evidence of the Kerr's ( kers) being farmers there, thanks to csc for the information on the grave yard esp Francis Ker died 4/01/1778 aged 71.  I have been in touch with the Archieves section in Dumfries and hopefully will pay a visit this summer to have a look round Howes.

Just found out that Francis Kerr was born Francis Carr as I have just found the marriage certificate between Henrietta Johnstone who is also buried next to him.  This has given me alot to go on now.
Thanks

Someone has placed a family tree on rootsweb - which contains the KERR/POOL's/BELL's and other surnames they have interlinked the KERR's very well with evidence.

I have ancestors who were Pools and Kers from The Howes, Annan. James Ker (b. 1811 and Elizabeth Pool (b. 1821), to be exact. Do  you know anything further about these people. As far as I can make out James' father was William (b.1774) and mother was either or both Agnes or Nansy Holliday. Would love some help with any of these please.
