Title: Smith's, Leicestershire
Post by: anniejukes on Saturday 23 May 09 22:32 BST (UK)
I am trying to find information on a family of gypsys from Leicestershire.  My connection is Lementina Smith who married Jonathan Popple in 1837 in Leicestershire.  On her marriage cert her father is Sam Smith and witnesses Nathaniel and Harriett Smith.
Lementina was born arounf 1820 in Peatling/Bruntingthorpe.
This is all I have, trying to work my way back and find out more about them.!!!

Hi

There are quite a few Leicestershire Smiths in the list available for download on the Leics Record Office site: www.leics.gov.uk/index/community/recordoffice/recordoffice_resources/record_office_gypsy_and_traveller_index.htm

It doesn't feature your Lementina or Sam but there is a Nathaniel having a child baptised in the right period.

Best wishes

Sharon

Lementina Smith was my great grandmother on my mother’s side who was given the name Lemtany as it was a name passed on in the family. My granny’s name was Phoebe Lyon. I wonder if your Lementina is the same person?

Hi Pauline
Just had a look at my tree and I don't have a daughter named Phoebe for Lementina & Jonathan...they had many children who sadly died, and as far as I know the only ones who survived to adulthood were my ancestor Alfred, Jane and Emily. That's not to say it isn't the same Lementina...surely it wasn't a common name! 🤣
