Seeking to prove (or disprove!) this is my grandfather.
Family stories say Joseph David was already married when he married Ivy Reid in 1928. Apparently not long after their son, Derek, was born he was sent to jail for bigamy and never heard of again. Family stories also say Joseph David was Welsh.
Only facts I have from a marriage certificate are:
Marriage Certificate from Hampstead, London states:
16-Feb-1928
Joseph David - 48 years - Bachelor - Builder and Decorator - 120 Mill Lane - Father: Frederick David (deceased) Merchant Seaman.
and
Ivy Reid - 22 years - Spinster - Tailoress - 120 Mill Lane - Father: Frederick Reid - Brush Manufacturer.
I have found a 'Joseph DAVID' in the 1891 census of Wales stating he was 12 yrs old (born in Carmarthen, St Clears) and an inmate of the Carmarthenshire Workhouse.
Could this be my grandfather?
Can you suggest how I might find out his father's name (hopefully Frederick as per marriage certificate)?
Any help greatly appreciated!

Not sure whether you are related to Derek, their son. My husband is related to Ivy Reid as her sister Gladys was his grandmother.
Funnily enough his mother, Joyce, asked me yesterday to look into this too. I have found the wedding details and Derek's birth.
Joseph David may have married in Taunton in 1925 to Ruby Bell. I'll let you know what my search throws up.

Derek is my father, so I guess that makes us 2nd cousins! What a small world it is!
Dad and Joyce were very close while he was still in England and they still keep in contact now.
Would love to chat more to you about this and am really keen to know what you have found out. I am finding it hard to do the research needed from Australia, so any help you can give me would be hugely appreciated. Dad is 81 in 2 weeks and his health isn't the best so I would love to find out more about his father for him sooner rather than later. Based on your research so far, do you think the 'Joseph David' listed at the Carmarthenshire Workhouse in 1891 is Derek's father?

I'm afraid you email address was deleted from the message. Maybe you could send me one. My name is Karen and if you type that in lower case together with Joyce's surname (no spaces). I use Lycos as a server with com on the end.
The Ruby Bell was not right as that particular Joseph David was born 1904 which would make him too young. We are assuming, of course that all the information given was correct. This is unlikely as I have been delving into Family History for some years and people were economical with the truth for the slightest thing. In this case the age is probably incorrect, possibly the surname too. I believe the father was not Frederick; it's too convenient that he was dead at the time of the marriage.
I have emailed the archives at Lewisham Library to see if they can help. I'll let you know how I get on.
