hello
I have a copy of an application for poor relief made by a gt gt uncle in 1868 . Within the application it is stated that a member of his family , a boy of 8 yrs of age had been removed to Backhill due to his disability . It stated that he had a diseased hip joint . I am assuming that this place is some form of hospital for possibly TB cases or cancer .
I can only find an area of Glasgow called Blackhill . I would appreciate it if any member could give me an insight into the place referred to .
Many thanks
Eric

Hi Eric,
It will be BARNHILL, the name of the poorhouse and its hospital. There is a link to Barnhill somewhere, I'm sure another list member will know. Try putting it into google for now.

Hello lodger
Thanks for your swift reply . With the aid of a magnifying glass and a couple of cans of beer I do believe you are right . I have found a few links to it and some photos from Glasgow archives .
Thanks
Eric :)

I hardly like to admit this, but the children's ward at Barnhill doesn't look so very different from the wards I first went into as a student nurse at Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne Victoria. Luckily we moved out of the 1800's built hospital within my first year of training!!! - but those rows of beds , and the highly polished floors are very familiar! Uniforms were a bit more modern though ;D ::).
Is Glasgow Barony a municipality of the city - I see it arising when I look for rellies in the area?

Is Glasgow Barony a municipality of the city -
Barony was a large parish outside the original Glasgow City area (mainly to the North and East ) - the parish was later broken up as the City expanded and absorbed the Barony area

shows the parishes surrounding Glasgow around 1795

Thanks for that info and the map - how recently was the Barony still called that - late last century I am thinking?

Mid to late 19th century the Barony Parish began breaking up into smaller parishes which were in turn swallowed up by Glasgow in the latter part of the 19th century. The expansion of Glasgow continued into the 20th century as it annexed previously independent Burghs and some areas which had been part of other Counties.

Ah that explains a lot. Thank you.
My in-laws used to talk of of the Royal Burgh of Rutherglen, but it looked like Glasgow proper to me!
( Sorry got off the track of the original post)
