Hi all,
I am interested in a family with the surname of SPRINT. It appears to be quite an uncommon name in this locality - at least it is today. The family where from the Derryhale area and attended Mullavilly Church of Ireland. Any info appreciated.

Hello
I am aware of, and have information on each of 7 children (there may be more) of Whitley SPRINT and his wife Eliza/Elizabeth. I directly descend from their son William who married Eliza Ann PRESTON.
I would love to share information with others interested in the Armagh SPRINTs.

Hello corsamjz
I have suspected the PRESTONS you mention were brother and sister, but I have never been able to confirm it as the marriage transcripts give William PRESTON as the father of both, but no mention is made of the mother. Do you have her name / details?
I don’t have any photographs, nor any information handed down through the family - all that I have is from certificates etc.
Whitley SPRINT (b. c 1795, where?) died in Portadown on 12 Jul 1869, the informant being his son-in-law John PARKER of Thomas Street, husband of Mary SPRINT.
Whitley married c1830 to Elizabeth (WOODHOUSE ?) (b.c 1792) who died on 03 Mar 1882 at Woodhouse's Court, Portadown. The informant was her son William SPRINT, of Watson’s Street, Portadown.
The children I am aware of are:
William SPRINT (c1825 - aft 1882) married Eliza Ann PRESTON (? - ?) daughter of William PRESTON, on 26 Jan 1858, Mullavilly, Armagh
Elizabeth (Eliza) SPRINT (c1830 - ?) married Francis (Frank) PRESTON (c1825 - ?) son of William PRESTON, on 17 Apr 1851, Mullavilly
Thomas SPRINT (c1833 - 11 Nov 1891, Govan, Lanark, Scotland) married (1) Jane ANDERSON (? - bef 1862) daughter of John ANDERSON, on 03 Dec 1852 at Mullavilly, and married (2 ) Mary Jane WOODHOUSE (c1835 - 08 Jan 1879, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland), daughter of John Obins WOODHOUSE
Isabella SPRINT (c1835-1876 Pennsylvania, USA) married William GRIMISON (c1836 - 6 Sep 1918, Pennsylvania, USA)
Mary SPRINT (c1836 - ?) married John PARKER (c1835 - ?) son of James PARKER, on 23 Mar 1854 at Mullavilly
Jennifer Jane (Jenny) SPRINT (c1840 - ?) married (1) William ROWAN (? - bef 1890) son of Daniel ROWAN on 31 Jan 1851 at Rich Hill, Armagh, and married (2) George McClean DOGHERTY (c1833 - ?) son of Hugh DOGHERTY at Belfast, Antrim.
Sarah SPRINT (c1846 - ?1890) married William GAMBLE son of James GAMBLE on 10 Sep 1873 at Drumcree, Armagh
I'll look out some more info shortly.

Hi Owairoa,
My paternal grandmother Sarah Annie Pearce was born and grew up in Coromandel, New Zealand. Her mother, Elizabeth Annie Sprint died on 18 April 1899 and was married to Henry Pearce who died on 10 January 1923. My grandmother had brothers by the name of Thomas Whitley, Ebenezer and Henry (who was known as 'Dump'), and sisters by the name of Isabel and Elizabeth. The Pearce and Sprint families came from Portadown.
The names are remarkably similar to the names you have listed. Are you able to tell me more about my family. My father didn't know much about his family but there was much speculation about the Sprints as it is such an unusual name.
Hope you can help.

Thank you. Eliza Preston was my great-great grandmother. Eliza Ann Sprint was my great grandmother and Sarah Annie Pearce was my grandmother. My father was Noel Cameron Kelly. Are we related? Adrian

Hello Adrian
Just replying so Corsamjz knows where we are at. Adrian is my second cousin, and we now have made contact.
I have Whitley SPRINT's death certificate - he died on 12 July 1869 in the house of his son-in-law and daughter (John and Mary PARKER nee SPRINT), in Thomas St, Portadown.
Would you have any suggestions as to where he/other SPRINTs may be buried. Do any headstones still exist for them?
Regards
Owairoa

Did any of your Sprints come to the US? I have Sprints in Massachusetts. In Taunton to be exact.
Aunt Minnie Sprint m. Uncle David Albert Hemingway. Her father was William Sprint.
-
Yes, the Massachusetts SPRINTs are part of the Whitley and Elizabeth SPRINT family from Portadown, Armagh.
Whitley and Elizabeth had a family of at least 10 children, the eldest of whom was William SPRINT (b.c. 1820) who married Elizabeth PRESTON on 26 Jan 1858, Mullavilly, Armagh.
William and Elizabeth SPRINT's fifth child was your William SPRINT. (My descent line is through their first child Elizabeth Ann SPRINT (b. 22 May 1859, Derryhale, Armagh)
William SPRINT (b. 1 Oct 1870, Portadown, Armagh) married Annie METCALF (b.c. 1870, Ireland) on 20 Oct 1892 in Taunton, Massachusetts. The children that I am aware of are:

TY so much! This is very cool. I am related because my dad's uncle Albert (his mom's brother) as he was called (probably because he father was David) Married Minnie. They had 1 dau. Dorothy Ann b. 1942 MA D. 2011 South Carolina of congestive heart failiour. Aunt Minnie lived to be 93 years old. We have aunt Minnie's baptism record and other things we got from Dorothy Ann before she died. She and dad were close when they were kids since they were very close in age. Dad remembers going to Taunton and they came to Manchaug a Village in Sutton where my dad was raised. We have lots of pictures of them.

Hi Owairoa,
You mentioned the following surnames GRIMASON / GRIMISON, PRESTON, SPRINT and WOODHOUSE.
I would like to point out connections to the GRIMASON surname that you may not be aware of.
The SPRINT and WOODHOUSE connections are in County Armagh, Ireland.
William GRIMASON married an Ann WOODHOUSE on the 13 January 1847 at Drumcree, Armagh, Ireland.
William GRIMASON /GRIMISON married Isabella SPRINT on the 17 October 1856 at Kilmore, Armagh, Ireland.
Mary GRIMASON married Andrew PRESTON on 2 November 1910 at Belfast, Antrim, Ireland.
So as you can see there is now more than one connection between the surnames you mentioned.
You also now have some locations to work with as well.
The GRIMASON surname is a registered Guild Of One Names Study which I registered.

I had a communication 20 years ago from a gentleman who's name was John Auton. He showed me a family tree he'd taken years to research. My distant grand father is Whitley Sprint, then down through Thomas Sprint. My actual Grand father was Joseph Sprint, he left Armagh and opened up a grocers shop in Govan, Glasgow, Scotland. My father was James Sprint, he had a brother called Thomas (I'm Thomas's double) I have two daughters and I'm the last male in this line.
I met 2 relatives living in New Zealand also about 20 years ago who were also descendants of Whitley.
I am James Sprint living near Bournemouth England.
-
Hi James,
Re Whitley Sprint.
I have reason to believe that Isabella Sprint whom married William Grimason may have been a sister of Whitley Sprint.
The reason i say this is a son of William Grimason and Isabella Grimason formally Sprint was named Thomas Whitley Grimason, he was born 16 Dec 1857 and Baptized 11 Mar 1858 at Ballyworkan, Armagh, Ireland.
I have been doing research on the GRIMASON / GRIMISON families since 1985 this is when I first learned that some of the GRIMASON's adopted the GRIMSHAW surname , started doing Genealogical research in 1984.
I have ample proof of the GRIMSHAW surname adoption and a probated will can not be refuted that shows this.
William Grimason and Isabella Grimason formally Sprint went to USA, there are descendants living in Pennsylvania today under the Grimison surname variant.
Due to recent DNA results it would appear that the Pennsylvania Grimison family is related to the Grimison family of New South Wales, Australia.
