this photo is circa 1920 . The house was then called Kelsie and is somewhere on Birchfields Road Longsight Manchester, help please to find the current house number so I can identify the property.

Hi 162megan & welcome to RootsChat.
I haven't been able to find anything online that identifies the house number relating to the name Kelsie. The latest directory on the Historical Directories site is the previous decade and has some names for houses on Birchfields Road, but not Kelsie. You could try a search using the surname & seeing if that identifies the number
http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/
Otherwise you may need to use the collection of directories at Manchester's Central Library
http://www.manchester.gov.uk/site/scripts/documents_info.php?categoryID=448&documentID=460
There are more pictures on the Manchester Local Image collection at
http://www.manchester.gov.uk/site/scripts/documents_info.php?categoryID=448&documentID=326
There are recent pictures on Google's StreetView (use Birchfields Road Manchester in Google Maps & then select Streetview).

In looking around online, "Kelsie" was once the home of William Alfred PEARN, so perhaps you could cross reference with the censuses?
www.wikipatents.com/gb/185004.html
www.wikipatents.com/gb/160602.html
But perhaps you've already been down that road...
-
Trouble is, in the directories I've looked at, William A. PEARN, engineer, keeps showing up at 5 Newton Terrace, off Newton Avenue, near Stockport Road - a little east of Birchfields....
-
thanks for all that - I have details of William Pearn and traced his house on Newton Avenue - he lived there before he moved to Birchfields Road.
So far I can't identify it by looking at Birds Eye view or Google earth.
-
Perhaps you could post a query on the Lancashire board for a look-up in a later directory?
-
Or perhaps something could be found in the Electoral Registers...
-
how do I add this request to the Lancashire pages?
-
The house in that picture looks long-established. From Google Street View, it looks like the houses were built in the 1930's or 1940's. It's quite possible that the house isn't there any more.
-
The Manchester Archives and Local Studies division at Manchester Central Library has copies of the Electoral Registers.
Go to the Lancashire Look Requests page:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,233.0.html
And post a query, titled something like "MCL lookup - Electoral Registers".
Someone going to the library might be able to check them for you. Just remember to give plenty of background information (a reasonable range of dates, names, and locations - i.e. 1920s, PEARN family, Birchfields Road, etc.).
Good luck!

Wow, I stood outside the house once, but it didn't look alot like my old photo. My mum used to talk about the house with great affection. Were you a student there? I really appreciate your getting in touch, I would love to have it if you don't want it, or even see a picture of it.

Your photo looks like the back of number 69, Megan. In Google maps in 3D satellite you can see the bow window at the rear looking much like your photo

My great grandparents bought the house when it was new in about 1909 and lived there until the 1940's. They named this next house Kelsie too, and when my great aunt died there in 1967 a lot of the mahogany furniture from the Birchfields Road house was inherited by my mother. I have it now in pride of place in my dining room. I wonder about the outside staircase with the glass sides, presumably that was original? My mother and her sister talked a lot about your house, and always referred to it as Kelsie Birchfields Road to differentiate it from the second Kelsie in Mere.

Hi,
Could anyone confirm for me - is this 69 birchfields road as it stands now?
I live there now and I was wondering if this is actually the house - it looks similar but I’m not sure if it’s the exact one which is there now - opposite the end of the park?
I know this was posted a long time ago but I am really interested to know if it’s the house. If so, does anyone have anymore information or photos?
I am happy to post photos of the house now!

Hi, how lovely to hear from you. I will look up my records and photos of the house and get back to you. Do you live in the whole house, or a flat?
Thanks for getting in touch.
-
Hi,
That would be amazing!! Thank you so much. Is there a way I can private message you on here? I don’t get how it works (I’m new)
It’s split in to 2 flats now on different floors.
