Hi,
Have found a death in 1908 at Craigend, Gourock.
Does anyone have any idea where this might be?
???

Hi GreySeagull
I have tried google
but all I am coming up with in the area is the recource centre in Greenock
I know there is no area called Craigend in Gourock
it may be just that one of the houses in Gourock at
that time was called Craigend
there are a lot of the old houses that still have the name on them
without an address it would be impossible to find if the name has
been taken off
if I ever come across it I will certainly let you know

Accidentally found a J Richardson Craig living at Craigard, Gourock before 1900 in the Glasgow PO directory.
Eventually pinned the place down and discovered it was in Barrhill Road. The Craigs living there and two doors up at Barrhill House were connected to a company called Craig Brothers and may have had links with R & J Craig Shipping.
But don't know if they were the occupants in 1908...

Hi Sheila-Ann,
Thanks for the information. Will now be able to look at the census for 1901 and later 1911, but maybe there are some voter's rolls or valuation rolls that might help find out who was living there in 1908.
Thanks again
;)

Hi,
Will have to take a look at it later on a different computer. My computer/browser doesn't seem to like opening files on the Inverclyde website....
Thanks for this

I just came across your message, as I stay in Craigard and was looking for anything connected.
You may have found this out by now, but there are lots of 'Craigs' in Gourock, and Craigend is not the same house as Craigard. See this link for a map of Gourock showing the house names. Craigend was built earlier, on the main coast road through Gourock:

It's not entirely clear if the original house remains or which it is. The house called Maybank seems to have been replaced by a larger tenement of the same name.

Hi,
I think the house I'm looking for is Craigard as the death in 1908 was J Craig who lived there in 1900.
Have not found the time to check censuses yet.....
Thanks for your help. I expect you have a magnificent view of the river!

Hello again.
I've done some research into the Craigs, so may be able to help. They had a textile factory in teh east of Glasgow, and offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh, where the family had lived before.
The family lived two doors along from here, and John Richardson Craig and his family moved into Craigard in the 1870s.

Hi If you" Google " Craigard 29, Barrhill Rd Gourock you will get the history of the house source information from Historic Scotland. There is also a picture of the house under the images tab. There is no date on the photo of the property (which is for sale) but it looks impressive.

Hi
I'm afraid the Historic Scotland entry is not accurate. It was not compiled by Historic Scotland, but by an amateur researcher who conflated information about two people and misidentified the Craig family who lived here.
Also, the building is no longer listed, but Historic Scotland may not have updated their website yet.
