Hi everyone
Im looking for this chap in the 1901 cencus..
I have a birth cert for James and he was b 1894 in Selby Reg district(Vol 9c-Page 797) his father was Thomas Hanley and mother was Mary Lowry.
Now from what I know from members of my Hanley rellies the Hanleys were "Black Gypsies" and came to England from Roscommon in Ireland after the potato famine and they were illiterate and couldnt speak English and apparently lived in tents and they settled in Selby-Yorkshire.
I have no idea how old Thomas or Mary were or whether or not they ever married I have searched for a marriage and Ive search 1901 till my head hurts but cant see anything and was thinking perhaps a new pair of eyes might pick something up.
Thanks
Jane

Hi Jane
ive trawled ancestry and cant find anyone on the 01 census that fits there is a James Hanley on the 1911 census listed as Selby area but his age is well out maybe worth a look to convince its not mis transcribed theres lots of Irish families and Hanleys in that neck of woods and a couple of Lowrys fit the bill too. But couldnt see any Mary Lowry in 1911 census.
Also checked Great War service records but none with Selby connections on there :(

Hi Jane
Was there an actual address on the birth cert that could be double checked for you?

Hi I believe the James Hanley you are referring to is my great grandfather. The birth year and back story about Roscommon match up. Please
Reply back if you have more information! Thanks!

Hi, James Hanley was my great-grandmother's brother.
HANLEY, JAMES Mother's maiden name: FINNIGAN
GRO Reference: 1894 S Quarter in SELBY Volume 09C Page 797
His sister was Mary Hanley (my grandfather's mother).
Their parents names were Patrick Hanley and Catherine Finnegan.
Catherine Finnegan's parents were named Thomas Finnegan and Bridget Lowery (they married in Selby in 1855).
Both the Hanleys and Finnegans hailed from Roscommon, and emigrated to Selby.
I found the family on the 1901 census residing in Selby:
