Title: McGregor - Thames Coromandel
Post by: crystal blue on Monday 15 June 09 11:25 BST (UK)
Hi

I am working on my McGregor family history and would welcome any information.

Alexander McGregor and Sophia Hohipaia Ngapuhi had several children one of which was my great grandfather John Alexander born about 1862 Kennedys Bay.

John Alexander McGregor married Mary Taruke Taite (born Raglan 1870).

I would love to hear from anyone that knows any further information or can help me find out more about Alexander and Sophia and their descendants.

Kind regards
Crystal

I don't know if you will get this message being 2 years late!
I have been researching whakapapa for my children. Hohi Ngapuhi is their great(x4) grandmother.  Her and Alexander Macgregor had a son John Alexander Macgregor who had a daughter called Harriet. She married Francis Rudolf Shortcliff who are my partners great grandparents (or the kids great great grandparents).
Don't know much else.
If you have any other info it would be much appreciated.

Did you follow that connection?

Have you made any contact with Whakatohea Maori Trust Board to ask about any linage info, or who they have to help folk with descent queries.
Following maori land records may reveal something also. to find which hapy she was associated with.
Do you have any possible names for her parents (probably in prior links..I'll go back and have  a read..

searching I have discovered that my kids are descendants of Muriwai,  sister of Toroa the Araki  (superior Chief who migrated to Aotearoa.)on the Mataatua canoe. Which means that you must be also Grassmoa. This is from the Kennedy family history which is quite indepth. Don't really quite understand all of the layout of the family tree at http://www.jillsjottings.orconhosting.net.nz/Kennedy%20History%202.htm
but http://www.jillsjottings.orconhosting.net.nz/Kennedy%20History.htm is quite informative also.

Hi there Grassmoa and Alimack

I was researching two years ago and have since changed computers, downloaded info that I had researched and changed email addresses etc.  and basically due to family commitments put my research on hold!!

Amazingly yesterday I thought about the geneology work I had started on my grandmother's side of the family - she was Harriet's sister - Margrett McGregor - daughter of John McGregor and Mary Taruke.
Thought it was about time I spent some time on it again!!  So called into this site.

Was so pleased to see your emails - happy to share any information - please feel free to email me.

Kind regards
Crystal

Hi I am a descendant of Mary (Mere) Taruke Taite her daughter Harriet is my great grandfather's mum (My great grandfather is Francis Rudolph Shortcliffe.) His son Alexander Vesta Shortcliffe married Vera Nellie McGillivray their daughter Lynette Ann Shortcliffe married Eparaima Morton Manuirirangi from Taranaki and I am their youngest child. I have been doing genealogy for quite awhile and have all the information that has been passed down. There is not much information on Mary Taruke Taite at this stage although I am hunting.

Hi Lexxbabe

I havent got much information on Mary Taruke Taite - she was my great grandmother - my grandmother was Harriet's sister.

I have a photo of Mary and my great grandfather John McGregor.  They passed away in 1945 and are buried at Waikumete Cemetary in Auckland.  I believe they lived in the Raglan area and moved to Riverhead later on.

Im keen to learn more too.

Dear Rose,

Thank you so much for giving us your email address it is so amazing -  a lot to take in our Cousin Michael * (Aunty Helen's eldest son is also very interested in the family tree and following everything with us) in fact he got most of his information from * Uncle Toms daughter but they are no longer in contact.  We only recently got in contact with Mike ourselves as we were searching for Aunty Betty and found that she has recently passed away in Maroochydore Australia, and the person we were talking to gave us Michael’s number.
Our home email is (*) and Michael’s is (*)  he is the loveliest person you could wish to meet and he was very close to your Dad for many years he did some wonderful things for him like make a new panel for his Jaquar car all by himself when he was only nineteen, he saw a very wonderful side to him, and cherishes his memories of Frank (Your dad).
Do you have a picture of our Grandmother Harriet ? at all we have been tending the grave when we found it – it was all overgrown but we have cleaned it up and put rocks around it as he is buried with our Grandmother Harriet and her little baby William James 5mths old just close to Christmas she buried her little boy how sad ! – we love her though we didn’t know her and now I know why Jesus wanted us to be buried as its so important to be able to go and put flowers there and chat to them. We would all love to hear from you. Love from Irene and Angela
2 x photos –
1st is Angela and Irene
2nd Mike and his Partner Val
3 x pic of your Grandmothers Resting place  your little uncle William and your Dad’s  we have only just started to make it nicer when we found it was all overgrown so we have put rocks around it and we are going to make mosaic stones with the names of all her children in the shape of a heart, but it will take a while – we have sought out the resting places of all the family and we will eventually tidy them all up it feels nice to do this we are happy to do it.

Kia Ora,

I am descendent of Alexander McGregor and Hohipaea Ngapuhi.

My line of descant is as follows:
Alexander James McGregor + Hohipaea (Sophia) Ngapuhi
- My Great, great, great grandparents
James Alexander Hemi Paritu Te Riaki McGregor + Heneti Te Wairama Te Ohaere
- My Great, great Grandparents
Christina McGregor + Wiremu (Bill) Connor
- My Great Grandparents
William Connor + Dorothy Jessie Margaret Coxon
- My Grandparents

I have just been in touch with The Whakatohea Tribal Database Admin, and I was informed that Hohipaea's mother is not Matarena Waitangi, a common mistake it appears. I am still researching her mother's name, possibly Puata, but I have yet to confirm this.
Her father's name is Tuterangikawhia, this was obtained from a Maori Land Court document dated April 1st 1867, in which Hohipaea was making a claim for her mother's land at Te Tawa and Te Ruahoata in Opotiki.

I hope this helps

My Granddads mum is Rose (putiputi) McGregor and his dad was Fredwick Durrant.

I'm trying to look back on my family history and our descendant and ansestory.

I would love to know for myself where my blood line came from and how it come to be. I would love this information for my children and future grandchildren we are all desendents or linked to Alexander McGregor

Hello J J Julian

... Welcome to RootsChat.   :)

It seems that many of the earlier participants in this thread, have not visited this forum for quite a number of years.

The most recent to login to RootsChat was "jessm63" on 7 May 2023, so hopefully they may have been alerted to the fact that another posting, (yours), has been made to this thread.

I hope there is a reply for you here, soon.
