hi, time to attack one of my brick walls.
my GG grandfather Robert EADIE is shown as born in Co Down, in abt 1825 (taking census, marriage and death certs into account
his parents (from marriage cert)
Robert EADIE ; a farmer
Mary EADIE (ne HANNAH)
Mary was deceased by the time of her sons marriage in 1855
Marriage was in 1855 to Catherine MCFARLANE b. abt1830 d. 28 Oct 1876
in Anderston, Glasgow, Lanarkshire,
Robert died 5 Nov 1878 at his residence, 175 Craighall Rd, Glasgow , he was a cattle feeder at Keppoch farm.
the census only gives him from "Ireland",though his marriage cert gives birth as, Co Down, (date unknown) and that is ALL I have to go on.
From a religious point of view the family would be protestant (if that helps in the search)
If anyone could assist in finding his birth, and possible date of travel to Glasgow, I'd be hugely appreciative.
thanks..

Can't fill in any details here but I can give you some general information.
Firstly, Ireland was part of the U.K. so no records were kept of people travelling between Ireland and Scotland/England/Wales.
Next, 'Protestant' doesn't help a lot when searching for church records- could be Church of Ireland, Presbyterian, Methodist, Congregationalist, Reformed Presbyterian, etc.
-
Thank you for the pointers,
I thought the travel would be a long shot, so not surprised there are no records.
As for religion, his marriage was conducted "in accordance with the rights and ceremonies of the established church", so... at that point at least , we are talking of the presbyterian Church of Scotland, but I don't know how much this reflects on his or his family's religion.

Your best bet is to try to find Robert Eadie senior in Griffith valuation.
http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_form.php
If you can identify him (try plenty of alternative spellings for the surname) then at least you have a parish and townland to work from. I found only one Robert EADY (no Eadies) in Co Down - he was the tenant of Alexander Robb at Ballyskeagh Low in Newtownards parish.
Civil registration of protestant marriages only began in 1845 so Robert Snr and Mary's marriage will only be found in church records (which are not indexed!). Ros Davies excellent website will tell you what church records are available for the parish in question and the townland address will help identify the right family in the records. Beware there are a LOT of protestant churches in Newtownards, so it could be a long day trailling through the microfilms at PRONI :P.

Good luck

These are a couple of sites that may help you.
1911 census
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/
It may help you pinpoint a location to search by using the surname. I was able to locate a church used by my relations as it was stated under religion. e.g. Ryan's Presbyterian
It definitely appears the name was prevalent in the Newtownards area on the Roz Davies site, the archives site and also the family search pilot site.
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/
Try the alternate spellings for the name such as Eddy, Eady, Eaddy
good luck

Thanks for the pointers, I'll try and take a look at some of these over the weekend.
Thank you

Hi Caroline,
Have you tried using the spelling "Edie". This was the way that the name was spelt in the Rathfriland area of Co. Down.
Cheers, Sam.
-
Hi Caroline. I would be really interested in your GGGrandfather. As a Robert Eadie from Down whose father and grandfather were also Robert Eadies I have an interest. My Grandfathers grandfather was Robert Eadie born in 1880. His father was Hugh who Had 3 children in Kircubbin. Hugh married Matilda. I cant find out who his father is but his Uncle was John Eadie who was born in 1826. Robert might be his brother. If you have found anything about his family I would really appreciate the information. Thanks
-
you should get his father's name from his marriage cert

Hi Dathai. Really appreciate your response. Many thanks. What muddies the waters slightly is that there was also a family of Eddy's on the Ards peninsula at the same time. Some of these have the same names but can be separated out as they have siblings with different names born at the same time. Is there any way to check the spouses name on this certificate before I go to Dublin to get it? What worries me is the date of the marriage is 1877. The Hugh Eadie that I want had a daughter Maryann born on Dec 28 1876 in Bureaugh Kircubbin, a son John born on Dec 25 1877 and Robert who is my direct ancestor who was born on Jan 22 1880. On Maryann's birth certificate it already has Matilda with Eadie as the surname and McKeown as her maiden name. So I would have expected the marriage before 1876. Matilda was born in 1853 and died in 1918. Do you know of a way of checking the maiden name of the spouse on the Hugh Eddy marriage certificate before I go to Dublin?
-
I should also say in response to an earlier comment that Eddy tends to be a Presbyterian spelling and Eadie tends to be Church of Ireland right back to Hugh Eadie buried in St Columbs cathedral in Derry who died on 17th December in 1697
-
If you note the marriage is registered in the 1st Quarter of 1877 so could also have occurred in Dec 1876.
You may pick up the date of the marriage from one of the pay sites.

edited to add
Matilda does say 33 yrs married in 1911 if i have the right lady

Thanks Dathai. It looks right. I had got confused as there was another Hugh Eddy who was born in 1826 and died in January 1903 who was married to Eliza Maxwell. They had two children Eddy on 11th September 1872 and Ephraim Maxwell Eadie 6th July 1865. Both Hugh Eadie and Hugh Eddy lived in Kircubbin so whoever was filling in the marriage certificate must have misspelled the name or got them mixed up. I will try to get the certificate the next time I am in Dublin. Appreciate your help.
-
Hi Dathai. I got the certificate. It has a Robert Eddy of Ballyfrenis named as the father. Managed to get the death certificate as well. Really pleased to get back as far as 1793 due to your help. Have been doing a bit more work. I managed to get a reference to Robert Eddy at the marriage of his daughter in Newtownards.I am going to explore this and the link to Gilbert Eadie Eddy depending on the document who leased land in the same place 15 years before Robert was born. Again thanks for your help

Just to let you know I managed to get William Sprott's (son) death certificate. It shows his mother had a maiden name spelled Eadie although on the marriage it is spelled Eddy. The spelling issue is a real nightmare.
I am going to call into the Church to see if their records show anything about Robert Eddy / Eady / Eadie before the marriages. One was Church of Ireland Kircubbin and the other was the First Presbyterian in Newtownards
Thanks again for your help

Hi All
I did not realise that Robert Eady was married twice and had been back and forward to New Zealand with his brother. I have located a gravestone in Donaghadee Church of Ireland which showed he died on April 17 1847, aged 48 getting me back to 1799.
He may possibly a son of the James Eady of Loughriscouse who leased land from Lord Londonderry in 1789. See http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/E/EaEm.htm
or related to Thomas Eady of Donaghadee mentioned in the tithe book for Donaghadee in 1834 See http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/down/tithe-applotment-books/donaghadee-parish.php#.Wbm-CsiGNdg
Are there any copies of the applotment books on-line? or is it a trip to PRONI? Also do these books give any details of the rest of the family?
Thanks
Robert

Hi All,
Hitting a brick wall with Hugh and Robert Eddy Eadie. Does anyone know if the burial records for Movilla cemetery are anywhere on-line? The other Hugh Eddy (born 1854) who lived close to the one mentioned above (born 1857) is buried there. I can't find any records of either of these two men before 1877. If they were not buried in Movilla any suggestions as to where they may have been buried. I have managed to rule out Donaghadee although there are other Eady's buried there. I had someone look at the exact location from the marriage certificate where Robert lived - it was not Ballyfrenis as I originally though but Ballygarvan which is just between Kircubbin and Greyabbey. Is there any other graveyards from that era around that area?
Thanks in advance
Robert

Thanks. Not all are there. For example when I went down Gilbert Eadie and Gilbert Eddy are both there but not mentioned. Also is there a way online to find burials without a headstone?
Thanks
Robert

Hi Caroline. I would really appreciate it if you could tell me where I could get the two certificates for your Robert Eadie who married Mary Hannah who you mention in your earlier post. I have looked and cant seem to find them anywhere. Even the church that they were married in would help. Thanks Robert

1823-1837 Tithes Applotment Books based upon the index work of the Irish Genealogy Hub’s listing for each parish in Northern Ireland, which are quicker to lookup if you know the parish! The relevant original books are in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) Belfast

I went looking for Bill Cardwell photos of individual tombstones in cemeteries around Donaghadee, yo my concern yet another most useful website has gone, does anyone one know if available elsewhere. some of the websites under the name yorick were sponsored by talktalk have closed down. if permanent gone it is sad. how does one find out how many genealogical webspace have they closed down. Bill did ask for donation . a benefactor for this alarming trend is needed. American presidents with irish blood trusts eg The Mellons might consider grabbing for their reputation.
spelling in Co Rtyone noticed Eddy,Edie
spelling so far used Eadie
not knowing if everyone knows the Griffith Valuation ~1860ish use http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/. there are continuation sheets bringing the homesteads holders up to 1922 at PRONI
