Title: Alban Gerity, Master Mariner, Llanwnda, Fishguard
Post by: hamiltonhunt on Saturday 20 June 09 10:13 BST (UK)
Alban Joseph GERRITY/GERITY shows up on 1911 Census, as a Master Mariner, with a domestic servant, Mary SAWYER and a boarder,Trixie. The Census indicates that Alban is married, however his wife is not indicated on the Census. Have not been able to find Alban on 1881 or 1981 so he may have been at sea or show up as Joseph.

Also trying to determine if there is a family relationship between GERRITY, SAWYER, and BUCKLEY. Story has it that Mary and Trixie lived with family relatives as servants.

Any information or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you, Isabel

Any luck finding him in 1891, or 1901? Sorry, I had mistyped the years. Those are the ones that have me stumped. I do have him in 1911 in Fishguard.

I haven't been able to find him on the marriage index. I am curious if his wife might be related to Mary (Buckley) Sawyer somehow. II did find him on the birth index: born Apr–Jun, Bridgewater, Somerset.

When Trixie lived with the relatives, we seem to recall it was an uncle and his family, not sure if it was her uncle or Mary's uncle.

Alban may have gone to Australia in 1912, worked as first mate, then chief officer out of New South Wales. GERITY is quite common, there's also another Alban GERITY...

Not sure about wife. BMD entry for Joseph GERITY, Salford Jul–Sep 8d 189, 1888 shows two grooms, but only one bride so not sure which fellow she married....

1936 Australia Electoral Rolls show two Kathleens (Kathleen Jean, Kathleen Isabel), no indication of ages or relationship. I am guessing Kathleen Jean is his wife but no proof of that.

Can anyone see something that I can't?

Hi there. I found your post during a random google search for some of my branches and thought I should register in order to answer at least some of your questions regarding Alban Gerity. Alban's wife was Kathleen Isabelle TURNER, who was my grandmother's eldest sister. Their daughter was Kathleen Jean. Kathleen Turners father was a Coal merchant in Ilminster and was also a captain and owner of some of the Brixham Trawlers. His seafaring background and interests may account for the connection to the Gerity family and hence the marriage of his daughter to Alban Joseph. Alban and Kathleen did in fact move to Australia and their family corresonded with my grandmother up until her death in 1961.

Unfortunately I have no information or insight into the Mary of your search or her connection to the Gerity or Turner families. Just thought I'd share.

A William Buckley was buried at Llanwnda Cemetery 10 Nov 1937 and Marion Oliver Buckley was buried at City Rd Cemetery H’west 13 May 1963.

There are Sawyer and Buckley burials at Llanion Cemetery Pembroke Dock from 1887 to 1987

None of the 3 surnames of your interest appear in my database of surviving headstones of Park Street Cemetery P.D.

Hi all; like others I found your post during a random google search of Alban Joseph Gerity.

I am the grandson of Kathleen jean Moffatt ( née Gerity). Jean had two daughters, both still alive and well. Jean married in 1936 as far as I am aware. The sea faring stores of Alban and being a master mariner are the same as I have been told by my family.

My mother and aunt are chasing information about the family as information had been lost.  Also been told Gerity was changed from O' Geraghty, about Alban Joeseph or his fathers time.

Happy to learn more of more of Alban Joseph and his lineage, siblings etc.
Will post later with more questions from family.
Thanks

Hi all

Just ran across these old posts...

Curious when/where Kathleen Jean Gerity was born? Was it around 1911/12? If so, that might explain her mother's absence in the Fishguard 1911 census that my gm, Trix, was listed on.

I did find a BMD listing of Kathleen marrying Ernest in New South Wales in 1937.

"The S.S St. Andrew The latest addition to the G. W. Railway's fleet of turbine vessels has resumed her position on the station between Fishguard and Rosslare, and is being commanded by Capt. Gerity. The vessel carried nearly 2,000 passengers to Rosslare on Monday afternoon. "

"Early on Sunday morning the turbine cross-channel vessel "St. David," with Capt. Gerity on the bridge, was again placed upon the Rosslare service, after having been fitted with a new propeller in lieu of the one damaged recently, and having undergone her periodical survey at Birkenhead."
