Title: *COMPLETED* Glancy - 1861 Census Challenge
Post by: scotmum on Sunday 28 June 09 17:39 BST (UK)
Hello folks

A few of us have tried without success...so throwing open here.

Can anyone find the following family group in 1861 Census - I believe as all children were born Dundee, including one in 1864, that they were probably still in area but may have been mis-transcribed:

Patrick and Helen Glancy (Glancie/Glancey) married Dundee 1855

above both Irish

children, born Dundee

Catherine1856
Bridget 1856
Rose 1858
Patrick 1860
Mary 1864

can't find them in 1861 Census or beyond....nor deaths of parents (haven't checked for deaths of children)...someone found possible Ellen (rather than Helen) and some of children arriving Philadelphia 1874, but not certain if same people.

That imigration record that someone has found looks to be potentially the family  :) From the 1880 US census:

Pat GLANCY, 58, labourer, b. Ireland
 Ellen GLANCY 60, b. Ireland
Patric GLANCY, 20, Works In Woolen Mill, b. Scotland
Mary GLANCY, 15, Works In Woolen Mill, b. Scotland

Census Place: Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

If you check the 1880 census on www.familysearch.org, there are quite a contingency of Glacys in Philadelphia.

As for the 1861/71 in Scotland.... ???

Even though the mother's name is given as Mary in 1861 I feel this has got to be them living at 2 Lyon's Close, Dundee.

FromAncestry-

Patrick Glaney 31
Mary Glaney    32
Cathrine Glaney    5
Patrick Glaney    11 Mo

Nel

Clever you Nel  ;) I'd go with that. The ages for parents also seem to fit well with that potential 1880 entry in PA.

Yes the children clinch it really.

Patrick is boarding with what looks like his mum Rose in 1851. Do you have that one?

Ooh...looks promising folks...had tried various '*' combinations on SP but missed those. Will investigate further. Thought it had to be mis-transcriptions causing problem. Thanks for the 1880 USA find too....the Philadelphia arrival didn't have Patrick senior, but your find certainly looks to be same family group.

Re Patrick with mother in 1851...had noticed that and thought it might be him. Just need to re check his mum's name on wedding cert...wasn't that clear from memory.  Thanks again for input.

Yes, his mum was 'Rose'.

If no trouble, can you post the details from the 1851...I've wasted quite a few credits on SP today and don't have Ancestry at moment.

Big ask...

have played around on Ancestry Indexes and can see this same family in 1900 minus Patrick senior. Now, looking to see if anyone has them on their tree, I can see one called Quigley Tree by a kathleendestefano_1 which has Glancy entries including at least (haven't gone through all) a Patrick born Ireland 1832 died Philadelphia 1897 (so makes sense for not finding him in 1900 Census Index) and a Mary born Dundee 1866. As I have no current Ancestry membership, I can't contact the person (who looks to have been active on site this month). Could someone with access kindly send them a message directing them to this thread here?

Thanks, in hope.

ps

Helen Glancy nee Flinn was my great great grandmother's sister

Thank you Nel and Monica. Thanks also to sdbadger and, from memory, ms_j_a (who picked up first on a possible Philadelphia link) from chatterbox.

Contact was made with the lady from the Ancestry tree in my last post by you, Nel, and by sdbadger who was in chatterbox last evening. The lady (who it turns out is in New Jersey) responded by visiting the Rootschat chatterbox late yesterday evening. Thankfully I was still online and we had a lovely 'conversation', discovering that her  great great grandmother was the Helen Glancy from my post, my great great grandmother's sister. We now hope to communicate again by email and share our research.

Well done one and all.
