Hi I am having real trouble sorting out the family tree of my Liverpool relatives. I am looking for William Gorst who was married to Katherine Louise Margaret Smith in maybe the 1890s early 1900s. William Gorst was the son of John Gorst and Ellen. John Gorst was a coachmaker.
I cannot find them in the 1901 or 1881 census - maybe there is something about the Liverpool or county borders I don't understand. Any help gratefully received!
Thanks,
Sam

This looks like your family in 1901:
William Gorst 32 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Head Kirkdale Lancashire Bookbinder
Catharine Gorst 27 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Wife Kirkdale Lancashire
Arthur Smith 28 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Brother-in-law Kirkdale Lancashire Book Keeper
John Smith 32 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Brother-in-law Kirkdale Lancashire Book Keeper
The address looks like 26 Pluto St, Kirkdale.

A William Gorst of the right age shows up in 1871, 1881 and 1891 with father John R Gorst, a coach trimmer, but John's wife is Mary, not Ellen. How sure are you of Ellen's name? Perhaps John was married twice?
I'll list the families anyway - if this is the right lot, the 1871 census gives you an extra generation!
1871:
John R Gorst 30 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Head Everton Lancashire Coach Trimmer
Mary Gorst 31 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Wife Everton Lancashire
John H Gorst 3 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Son Everton Lancashire
William Gorst 2 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Son Everton Lancashire
Mary Gorst 2 months Liverpool, Lancashire, England Daughter Everton Lancashire
William Gorst 60 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Father Everton Lancashire Coach Painter
Elizabeth Gorst 34 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Sister Everton Lancashire
Samuel Gorst 26 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Brother Everton Lancashire Carriage Maker
William Gorst 20 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Brother Everton Lancashire (???)Ginger Beer Maker (Hard to read)
1881:
John R. Gorst abt 1841 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Head Everton Coach Trimmer
Mary Gorst abt 1840 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Wife Everton
John H. Gorst abt 1868 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Son Everton
William Gorst abt 1869 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Son Everton
Hannah Gorst abt 1873 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Daughter Everton
Elizabeth Gorst abt 1876 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Daughter Everton
Arthur Gorst abt 1878 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Son Everton
Samuel Gorst abt 1879 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Son Everton
Samuel Gorst abt 1879 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Son Everton
George Gorst abt 1881 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Son Everton
1891:
Gorst, John R 51 Liverpool, Lancashire Head Everton Lancashire Coach Trimmer
Gorst, Mary 49 Liverpool, Lancashire Wife Everton Lancashire
Gorst, John H 23 Liverpool, Lancashire Son Everton Lancashire General Labourer
Gorst, William 22 Liverpool, Lancashire Son Everton Lancashire Book Binder
Gorst, Hannah 18 Liverpool, Lancashire Daughter Everton Lancashire Paper Bag Maker
Gorst, Elizabeth 15 Liverpool, Lancashire Daughter Everton Lancashire Paper Bag Maker
Gorst, Arthur 13 Liverpool, Lancashire Son Everton Lancashire

Hope this helps!

Ok thanks for your help on this. I think the varying names/spellings made this a bit harder!
Thanks all!

Hi,
I don't know if this helps, but there was a family named Gorst living in Fleetwood Lancs in the late 1950s.

Samantha, Did you decide that this was the right family or not? My husband descends from the Gorst family mentioned in the above censuses, descendant of William Gorst, given as aged 28 (looks like 28 rather than 20 to me, and is given before Samuel, but Ancestry has it indexed as 20, and 20 fits in better with other censuses!), Carriage maker.
It is Samuel, aged 26, who is given as the Ginger Beer Maker!
Courtesy of my b-in-law, I have more info re this Gorst family if it is the right one for you
Please contact me at margaretjanew at hotmail dot com if you would like any further info, albeit second-hand
