Hello Shane, just wonder if this may be of any interest to your research---First when doing any look ups always look for differant ways of spelling the name Rattigan/Ratagan/Ratican/Rattican & so on.I 've not come across the name around Moate with any of my own research but I do know the name was very popular around the Ballymore area (just a few miles from Moate )From Griffith Valvation there are Ratigans listed for Carricknagower & Lugacaha both places are in Ballymore Co Westmeath. Then I just had a look on the Irish family history foundation site--popped in the most popular name Mary--there were 26 Mary Rattigans listed for Co Westmeath & 8 of them were born in the parish of Ballymore between 1833-1889.Once again if you check out the map you will see how close Ballymore is to Moate ,Good Luck ,regards Nipy

  Hello Shane,
This may be a totally different family. There was a James Rattigan in Mullingar in the 1970s.His wife's name was Angela and I think that her maiden name was Gavin. They were Travellers (Gypsies).

 Hello Shane,
You can be sure that the Rattigans I remember were relatives of yours. The name Rattigan is rare in Ireland and also rare among Travellers.I came across only one more Rattigan in my whole life, he is in Dublin and is not  a traveller.James Rattigan that I remember has to be a cousin of your father.I remember my mother saying that his wife Angela's maiden name was Donoghoe while my aunt said it was Gavin.Among Travellers there are often double connections between families, so you could have two James Ratttigans (cousins) married to women called Gavin (sisters or cousins).
Is your mother alive? If you like you can contact me on the e-mail which is (*)
I can give you more information. What is your surname.?Have you visited County Westmeath?

                                                                                                                   Regards,
                                                                                                                               Con  Maxwell

One more post and you should be able to use PM (personal message) system here (Shane will probably have to resend his earlier message) to exchange details like email addresses which are not allowed to be posted online.

Hi Shane, would love to have a reply from you. I'm not sure how to send and receive messages. Am new to Roots Chat Com. I have cousins named Gavin, on Bridie's mother's side, and cousins named Rattigan on her father's side. I think Bridie's grandmother was named Elizabeth Mc Manus and her grandfather, was named Patrick Rattigan all from West Meath. Clara Road Moate.
Beor.

You now have enough posts to send Shane a PM (remember you aren't allowed to post details of living people here)- just click on the little green scroll under his user name, type your message in the box that comes up and click send button.

Hello Shane my name is Paddy McDonnell, my granny was Rattigan from the Westmeath area. Nan (Anne) Rattigan. She had a sister and brother in mullingar, old paddy Rattigan, and Lizzy (Rattigan) kavenagh, old paddy died about 15 to 20 years ago. Lizzy died 2 to 3 years ago, and my granny died 5 years ago, I will see what I can find out for you as i am sure your mum is related to my granny.

Paddy saw your messgae, your grandmother was sister of my grand dad Luke Rattigan.  Also brother to Lizzie, Paddy, Michael and Frank.  I'm sure there was brother John also but my dad would be more benificial for information.  My family stay in Hamilton in Uk.  I remeber Paddy and Lizzy from when I was kid, unfortunatley met them for the 1st time at their brother Franks passing
