Hi

I am originally from Rosslare Harbour where many people moved to when the old fort in Rosslare strand was washed away, There are a family of Shiel who live in Ailsa Lodge Rosslare Harbour a large guest house, I remember hearing once that their family came from Old Fort, you might want to contact them.

Hi There

My G G Grandparents lived on the Fort.  my gg Grandfather was Patrick Cogley and he married Ellen Shiel they had 4 children Aidan Christopher Patrick (Paddy) and Ellen, when they left The Fort the family moved to School Street Wexford Town.

I have a photo of William Shiel when he was a crew member of the Rosslare Fort Lifeboat
from the Duncannon Fort Museum.

If you think there may be a connection let me know
Regards Sue Jagger.

My grandfather William (Bill) Sheil  (or Sheill) was born in 1888 in Rosslare Fort, Rosslare, Co Wexford. For a few years he lived in Grimsby (1918 to 1920 approximately). He had relatives there, Edward Sheil and Christina Sheil, possibly first cousins which I have only recently heard about ond of whom I have no other details. William was married to Margaret (Maggie) Bellamy and they lived at 28 Yarbourgh Street and may have had either a small carpentry or transport business.

Ellen Sheil is a 2nd great grand aunt of mine.

Would anybody kindly happen to know of a Jones (John and Kathleen (O'Brien) Jones) family that lived at Ailsa Lodge during the 1930s?

Thanks!

dathai, thank you so so much for that record. Unfortunately, it is a different John Jones and Kathleen O'Brien...can you believe it! Such common names are making my search very difficult. Our John and Kathleen were married in 1915 in parish Kiltoom, diocese Elphin, Roscommon. John's dad is named William and Kathleen's father is Richard J. O'Brien.

Looking at old newspapers I can see the following names associated with Ailsa Lodge Rosslare Harbour
Allen pre 1925
O'Cochlain 1950
The Commissioners of Public Works 1967
Sheil 1970
No Jones
However if I change the search to Jones and Rosslare Harbour I get
1934 Mr J Jones has been appointed Surveyor of Customs and Excise Rosslare Harbour, he has come from Dublin
Feb 1935
Liam Maher was sentenced for sending a threating letter to Mrs K Jones Rosslare Harbour while she was living in Tivoli Terrace Dun Laoghaire.
The previous June men called to her house and demanded a blue shirt belonging to her son, he was a member of the Blueshirts.
At an id parade she picked out one of the men, afterwards she received a letter claiming to be from the IRA threating to kill her son Richard if she identified any man.

Sinann, so kind of you! Thanks again. The big mystery for me is John's father, William Jones. I just can't figure his identity out. He died on 7 May 1958 in Ballyhea, Charleville, Co Cork. I’m trying to find his wife’s name, father/mother’s names, birthdate, and birth place.

His death notice doesn't mention any family apart from the fact he died at his sister's home in Kilmacanogue Bray. No names other than William.
Funeral in Kilmacanogue

I think that John 19 in the census is the person who became the Excise officer and William is his brother.
Depends on what even approx DOB Livestorymaker has for John.

He died before 5 March 1964, there is a death on the 2 March, occupation just says retired so not 100% sure it is him but age is 72 so born about 1892 which would work out with the 19 year old in 1911

I can't thank you all enough...you really cracked the code for me on this. I wonder how far back I can go with these guys now. I know a bit about Kathleen's father, Richard J. O'Brien and his lineage, but John's family with that common name is really really hard.

Do you agree that his father is John?
Where did you get his father as William?
No point researching the incorrect family.

If they are the correct family
1901
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/Ardskeagh/Ballyhay/1118984/
Their ages are younger than 10 years because people increased their age in 1911 in the hope of getting a Old Age Pension which was introduced in 1909
In 1911 both parents are down as born Limerick in 1901 only Johanna but they live close to the border with Limerick.
John's birth 1891
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1891/02383/1889336.pdf
Johanna's name is Burke
Marriage 1872 Limerick
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1872/11302/8146803.pdf
John Cooleens near Ballyhae, Johanna Athlacca which is in Limerick. This is where they were living not necessarily where they were born.

Can you answer the question you've been asked please.
Where did you get the name William for John's father?
I just want to be sure it's the correct family.

Oh sure! I got the name William from my aunt, who was married to John Finbar O'Brien Jones (born 29 March 1929 in Dublin) (John Jones' son). I think it was indeed an error and that you found the correct person.

Not on an offical record than, that's good.
You can look for civil records here
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp
If I remember correctly Johanna died 1913 you can try looking for that.

To get back to John and Johanna baptisim (they were born before civil registration) you will need parish records

Ballyhay and Cooleen are in Chareville parish

Also Ballyhea

They must be on the border of the two parishes

First I would look for John and Johanna's marriage in the parish records.
I think this is the correct parish

I really can't thank folks enough again for all this fantastic help! So wonderful. If anybody happens to come across anything on John Jones' father, Patrick Jones, and his unidentified mother, I'd be eternally grateful...but I'm already so grateful for the help and can work with what I've got.

Hey everyone,

Was looking to see if anyone knows any info on my great grandfather Richard Sheil, born June 6 1924 he married Elizabeth Murphy. I’m guessing dates here but somewhere between the late 1950’s - 1965 he was a winter pro at Rosslare golf club.
I’m just trying to find any information on his relatives, if anyone has any info or could point me in the right direction that would be amazing!
