I'm trying to find a date of birth for my ancestor Ellen Ann Thornton. She was born about 1871, her father was David Thornton who supposedly served in the Inniskilling Fusiliers and married Sarah J. who was also born in Ireland. We think Ellen may have been born in the English Army barracks, possibly in Tipperary but the 1911 census has her place of birth as Glanworth, Ireland. I don't know where to begin looking for details of her birth, can anyone help please?

The index to Irish Civil records is available on familysearch : http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#c=1408347;p=2;t=searchable
if you find a possible match you can order research certs from the GRO - www.groireland.ie
Glanworth is about half way between Fermoy and Mitchelstown (both Co. Cork) and there was a large barracks in Fermoy. The County Tipperary border is not far away - maybe 10km
The registration district for that area is Fermoy.

Thanks Shane and Audrey. I had found a marriage between David Thornton with the correct age and father's name and a Sarah Jane Cranwell in Aldershot and I had made an assumption that since David was a soldier this was probably his marriage. Now that you've located Ellen's birth I know the marriage is the right one. Thanks again, now I can get the certificate.

IGI has a birth for Thomas born 28 March 1875 Co. Cork to David Thornton & Sarah Cranwell.

Thanks again, Ellen had a brother William Thomas or Thomas William, depending on which census you look at also born in Ireland.
I may be a bit dim but I'm trying to search IGI myself but I can't seem to refine my search to show births in Ireland. Am I doing something stupid?

I found the IGI entry by doing a parent search- on the main search page put in the father's first and last names and the mother's first and last names and NOTHING else- then press search button. (www.familysearch.org)
If you mean the Irish births on LDS Pilot site, here's the link-
