Title: Where have all the TIMBERLAKES gone?
Post by: htimberlake on Saturday 11 July 09 12:40 BST (UK)
Hi there

I've been doing my family history for some time now and, with the help of others, managed to get my tree back to the 1480's in Buckinghamshire. However, about 200 years of my family's past was spent in Kings/Abbots Langley and Sarratt - the last link with my family and the villages was around 1900. I have been back to both Kings Langley and Abbots Langley on numerous occasions to find a trace of my family but can barely find a single grave of any Timberlake let alone a direct ancestor.  ???

Has anyone come across a Timberlake grave on their travels? Is there some graveyard in that area I have missed where one or two of my relatives are lying?

Perhaps I'm being a bit naive, expecting to find many but with such a long association with that area, surely there must be something. Perhaps they were too poor to afford a grave?

If anyone could help then that would be fantastic.  :)

Many thanks
Howard

Hi Howard and welcome to rootschat ;D

Have you checked the RC Surnames Board for Timberlakes?  Go to the top of this page, click on 4th button from left and that will take you to the RC Surnames... as well as looking for people who have posted there why not add your surnames?

Hope you find your Timberlakes and their graves- the dead are so hard to pin down ::)

Hi Howard

I don't know if these are to early for you but there are a lot of Timberlake burials on my index between 1800 & 1851 in Kings Langley, Chipperfield & Sarrat.

If you have any specific names, I can check for you. :)

Hi Maddie

That's very kind of you - thank you! There are a few names which I can give you (all might have died in and around 1800-1850)...
Matthew Timberlake
Elizabeth Timberlake
James Timberlake
Jane Timberlake

Sorry to be cheeky but you also might be able to solve big mystery - in case you have burial records for Kings or Abbots Langley around 1890...  :-[

Joseph (Joe) Timberlake (son of Kings Langley and died 1890 in Islington but I think he may have been buried back in Herts)

If there's anything I can help with just shout - my family tree is pretty extensive for Timberlakes and associated families in Bucks/Herts.

Many thanks again for your kind help  :)

Hi Howard

I am sorry but I can't help with your Joseph Timberlake as my burials don't go much past 1850.

Not sure if these will help you much either as there isn't a lot of detail with them but here goes.

Burials at Sarratt Holy Cross

There are 2 Elizabeth's, unfortunately no ages given, one buried 24 Jan 1805 & the other 26 April 1805.
Mathew 28 April 1803 again no age given.

I do have the MI's for Sarratt Holy Cross & these burials aren't mentioned so presumably the graves have dissappeared.

Kings Langley All Saints
Elizabeth 22 Dec 1816 aged 3months.
Jane 22 Feb 1825 aged 18months, abode Langley Hill.
Jane 17 Nov 1841 aged 84.

Chipperfield Saint Pauls.
Mathew 14 June 1846 aged 60.

Only James Timberlake's are Bushey & Watford.

Hope there's something there to help you although there a quite a lot of other Timberlakes in K/L.

Thank you very much for your offer of help, although my lot are mainly Herts & Bucks I haven't yet come across any Timberlakes. ;D

Regards
Maddie

Great - thank you Maddie.

I think one of those Elizabeths and the Matthew are my descendants! Both would have been in their 70s or 80s by that time so that makes sense. I will have to pop over to Sarratt sometime soon and see if the grave(s) still exists.

As for the others, I'm sure they have some kind of link to me but I'll have to dig a bit deeper to see how it all fits together.

Anyway, many thanks for your valuable help!

Kind regards
Howard

If anyone has come across a Martha Timberlake born sometime around 1720, I'd be interested to hear from them.  I've a Martha Timberlake marrying Henry Winchester in 1739 in Chenies and to date we've not found her in either Buckinghamshire or Hertfordshire.  Unfortunately their children aren't very helpful, being Henry, William (after Henry's father), Martha and Elizabeth (after Henry's mother)!

Hi, im originaly from Kings Langley & have a wonderful book called: Kings Langley - A hertfordshire Village.

It mentions a Mr & Mrs. Albert Timberlake who at somepoint owned a timber yard & wharf and they also gave a very generous donation to a church in 1935!

If you would like the info, its only a very small amount, I'd be more than happy to email to you.

If it helps you, Sarah Timberlake, born about 1812 @ Wycombe Marsh ,was a 2nd great-grandmother of mine.  Her father was Thomas, born about 1783 & her mother Ann, nee Dorrell.

Hi htimberlake,

My ggrandfather was Alfred John Timberlake b:1880 Camberwell, England d 1913 Hackney. I have left 2 emails on a Timberlake family tree [no reply]. emailed local Govt. Cemetery/ies for both & ggrandmother Jessie Elizabeth [nee Meares], b 1879 d 1965 [Rochford]. I live in Australia, I could kick myself for not asking my support family/grand parents for this information - it's not easy - I got onto roots chat & a person suggested view Ecclesiastical Parishes - I am applying for p/port but can't spend entire time going to every cemetery in U.K. I was told the Mormon religion has info on everyone - don't know if that's true. We were all Church of England. My grandfather [Harold William Timberlake] never said they were poor, probably upper middle class. I have there original National identity cards & the homes they lived in were & still are quite good I looked the addresses up on Maps - I just want to see & go where they have been. But we have to remember there was a war.
if I find anything h I'll pass it to you.........good luck Ann---------- :'(

Hi

"My grandmother was born Doris Adelaide Timberlake in 1912 in Brentford"

At the moment, I am a little confused.
"Doris Adelaide" registered as "Doris M"?

Birth Reg 1913 QMarch Brentford 3a 185
Doris A TIMBERLAKE (Mother's Maiden Name registered as HORNE)

Birth Reg 1912 QDec Hackney 1b 738
Doris M TIMBERLAKE (Mother's Maiden Name registered as MEARES)
[ Is this Doris Margaret? ]

Did you say Timberlake? King's Langley / Abbitt's Langley / Sarratt?

And that you've got a line traced back to the 1480s??

I'd love to compare notes, htimberlake, because I seem to be linked in to this line.

Susannah Timberlake (1760 - 1846) who married Richard Ratcliff was my great x5 grandmother.

If I have got this line right, her father (my great x6 grandfather) was Matthew Timberlake (1726 - 1803) who married Elizabeth Saunders.

His father (my great x7 grandfather) was Matthew Timberlake (1705 - 1768) who married Mary Golder.

His father (my great x8 grandfather) was John Timberlake (1656 - 1729) who married Mary Lewin.

I am comfortable with all of those; but beyond that it gets a bit tentative, and this is where I'd love to see what others researching the Timberlake line have got.

I THINK that John Timberlake's father (my great x9 grandfather?) may have been Thomas Timberlake (1634 - ?); that HIS father (my great x10 grandfather?) may have been Thomas Timberlake (1603 - ?) who married Ann Kinges; and that HIS father (my great x11 grandfather?) may have been John Timberlake (c. 1570 - ?), whose wife was called Elizabeth according to the children's baptism records, but I've not found a marriage so I don't know her maiden name.

If you're back to the 1480s it sounds as though you may have three or even four more generations, and that you may be able to help me firm up on those tentative attributions.

I'd love to hear from you.

(And yeah - I know Howard's not posted in 5 years; but either he, or others with a marker on this post, might get an e-mail as a result of my posting this - and others who turn up this thread as a result of an internet search will now know of my interest in the family line :) )

Hi Howard,

My name is Ann - have been searching "Timberlake" graves for years now - my g/parents were supportive parents for me! (through an adoption). My g/father being Harold William Timberlake born Hackney 3/2/1906. Dec. Australia.    I simply cannot find G/father's  -  father :- Alfred John Timberlake b: qtr 1, 11 Dec. 1879 [1d 832] - Dec. qtr 4, 13 Dec. 1913. [1b 472]. G/father's mother:- Jessie Elizabeth Timberlake nee Meares, b: 1879 Old Ford Hackney ? Poplar [1c 656]. Dec. qtr Sept. 1965 (86 years), Rochford Essex [4a 677]. I don't know Howard if the Timberlake's are related at all. But this became stressful as planned on going with friends to UK & find these Graves. I couldn't go in the end, became ill - & live in Australia. I've tried everything to find these graves with no luck, emailed Council Cemeteries you name it I've tried it. I came to the conclusion they might of been placed in a family plot under another relations surname. Harold's brothers & sisters - Jessie Victoria died at 2yrs, Alice Louisa, Alfred Sydney, William Thomas, Doris   ?, & Ethel Elizabeth all born Hackney. " Simply Can't Find Them."  I wonder along your search if you might of come across my side of Timberlake's, all I can say is I had the most wonderful, loving couple that I still love, cherish & miss every day of my life. I'll be 60 next year - I have more or less given up on ever finding these Graves.  Best of luck with your search, it's not an easy process [stressful]. It became an obsession with me. I haven't been on Roots for a long time.          Kindest Regards Ann

Looks like Alice Louisa born 20/3/1902 bapt st.John Hackney 18/4/1902 married Cecil Richard Goodchild Dec 1928 Hackney - died Feb 1989 Dacorum Hertfordshire.

There is a marriage for a Doris M to a Reginald R Dunn 1933 Hackney born 1912 hackney

An Alfred Sydney born 30/7/1908 died March 1988 Hendon

There is a death for a William Thomas born 15/2/1910 in June 1978 Kingston upon Thames.

A marriage for an Ethel Timberlake to  William J Hammond Sept 1923 Hackney. There looks to have been three children from this marriage. Their marriages look to place them in Rochford as well.

Not sure if this is of any help

Hello Jennifer,

Thank you,

I do remember the Surname "Hammond." I have tried to search "Hammond" in Rochford area -
No luck. Looked via Telephone website here in Melbourne, Australia.
It won't allow me to do this. Jennifer are you in U.K?
Or maybe someone could look via a telephone book, with the area - [Rochford] & with surname "Hammond." Or maybe look via computer, if someone lives in U.K.
I'll keep trying for other sites, & if any Hammonds' are found - I will contact All

Thanking you so much

Ann

Hi,     Have found my Timberlake's, after years of searching [ which became an obsession ], & gave up for a quite a while. Happened to see an article about a person finding a member of the family they had been searching for. So after 1000's of cemeteries / emails to UK. Typed in that cemetery & low & behold they are all their - generations. And have found Spain was a favourite holiday / living place. Have some surnames for this generation so will put out some feelers!  Surprise, Surprise.  :) ;)

Hi Ann.
My Grandparents were Alfred Sydney Timberlake and Amy Gladys. I heard stories of your grandfather Harold in far away Australia! As a child was always fascinated by the fact I had a great uncle living that far away.
Great to read your posts.

Hi Mark,
I can't tell you how excited I feel to hear from you! [I tried a lot of family trees - Timberlake]. I was meant to come to England with my G/parents as a kid, whilst Jessie was still alive. My Grandparents Mark meant the world to me, they were my supportive parents. My mother & father divorced & had different families. I have my G/fathers original birth certificate along with my G/mothers. There wedding certificate & your Grandfather was a witness to the marriage. you know there were a few secrets kept regarding the Timberlake's. I can hear like it was yesterday - Alf being mentioned & did your G/mother go by the name Gladys, although there was a Gladys on Connie's [G/mother] side. Nearly 3 years ago I was going to go to England, Scotland etc with friends - one thing stopped me, although wanting to see England I couldn't go without finding where Alfred John Timberlake, Jessie Elizabeth & baby Jessie Victoria were buried, even though Jessie Elizabeth Timberlake died in 1965 I couldn't find where they were. I could of kicked myself thousands of times hearing stories but never did I dream of asking where are the families. I know Alfred J. died young of diabetes. I knew that. I am 60 years old & have 6 grown children & 6 G/children, Harold & Connie were my kids G/parents also Mark.  My youngest son is called Mark. Not too long ago I read an article in an English magazine after emailing 100's of different Cemeteries, getting on Roots chat, Ancestry, being knocked back by some people with the name Timberlake [whom I'm sure was related to your Alfred & Harold]. Well in the magazine was the cemetery named Colchester, Essex. was mentioned, I tracked it down & it certainly looks like a lot of Timberlake's are there. I knew I couldn't go without what I call paying my respects. You would of loved Nanna & Granddad, I was 38 when they died within weeks of each other, if I need advice it's them I still turn to [what would they have advised me to do]. Granddad was a Compositor for a Newspaper & that's where I met my husband. Mark I hope you have fond memories of Alfred that you would like to share.   This is a wonderful New Years gift from you to me.....Ann x

Hi all,
I have been researching a great uncle, Jack Robertson, who died in WW2 in the UK where he was posted with the RCAF. He spent the last week of his life with a Bessie Timberlake, mother of Ralph and Mary, in Watford, Hertfordshire. They would have been related in some way to his uncle Bowman Whitcombe Timberlake, the son of Reverend William Timberlake and Emily Balfour Moore, who married shortly before emigrating to Canada in the 1870s. William and Emily lived in and around Montreal, Ottawa, and Kingston in Canada. In a 1941 letter I have from Bessie to Jack's parent's, she mentions taking a day trip from Watford to visit her cousin Joe Timberlake's farm, which is either in (or is called) something that looks like "Nadoc" (or "Nastoc"?). I was wondering if anyone knew the relationship between William, Bessie, and Joe, and might be able to clarify the name of the farm. Many thanks in advance.

Hi & welcome to Rootschat

The 1901 census has a Joseph Timberlake born 1874 in Abbots Langley with wife Eunice Kate nee Simon's living at Hastoe Farm Tring where he is the farm bailiff. Joseph is still at the same farm for the start of WW2, his death is registered in 1942 Berkhamstead which is correct for Tring. Could this be cousin Joe.?? If so it may help to lead back to Bessie Timberlake.
