Can someone tell me what the first column reads. Also the last column says shopkeeper/farmer ?????
The person lived in Devynnock, Breconshire
-
The bit after farmer says 14 ac(res).

thanks !!! so would suspect the first column to be the name of the farm ??
-
14 acres, yes ;D
Is the first word Caper??? maybe Caperhouse ? name of the farm I'd think.
Did the family live there for a long time? If so, maybe if you looked at another census you'd get different more legible writing ???

Good idea Charlotte !! Attached is the 1861 census
-
Might have seemed a good idea at the time but it's blown out of the water my idea that it might be Caperhouse ::)
I'm none the wiser :D
some bright spark will turn up and read it straight off...

It looks to me like its Capel Rhos - but I cant find that anywhere if I google it - trying to find out where they lived - is there a way of pinpointing where it is from anything else on the census records - maybe some sort of grid reference which would help as maybe the farm is no longer there which is more than likely
-
if you have say the film or microfiche of the census, at the beginning[I think] of each section the enumerator wrote out the route he followed... maybe you can work out from this and from other entries close by the puzzling one, just where the farm was by matching the entries near your one with the route followed...and then ask the Local Studies Library what the name of the farm was...
That expalantion is just about as clear as theclose to illegible name of the farm ... ::)
the point to looking at the route is to give the studies Library as many clues as possible and minimize the work they'd need to do.
Others may well have better approaches.

Not much help I know but doesn't Capel mean Chapel in welsh and Rhos mean moor or promontory?
Perhaps there was a hamlet or just the farm at this place which would be too small to show on a map.
On a website giving monumental inscriptions of Breconshire, this appears - probably unconnected.

isnt 14 acres a fair size for a farm ???

I found this on the council planning applications. I noticed from the map that Devynnock is quite close to Heol Senni so might give a clue to the general area where the farm was.

In the 1871 and 1881 censuses (where it still Capel Rhos) it is placed in the hamlet of Senny.

Thanks for everyones replies - I have been to Senny/Defynnock today and if the farm is still there we could not find it ........ not to worry. At least now I know where it was ....
-
Hi,
Capel Rhos still exists in the hamlet of Senni.
If I had seen this thread yesterday I could have solved the problem.
To make up for my oversight I took this photo of the house earlier this evening for you.
