Hi guys,
I'm pretty new to this site, it's fantastic though.
I have a problem, I'm trying to find out more about my family(aren't we all :)) :)...I have 2 look up requests, I just cant get any further with them...I'm hoping someone can help...here goes:
1) Elizabeth Jordan From Risca born c 1737 married John Johnson from Bristol.-trying to find her parents...and to find out if they're Jewish...
2)Jehoida Hodges Welsh rugby player born 1876...trying to find more about his family
I would be grateful on any help.
Thanks.

Hi
As Jehoida was born before 1881 you will find him on the 1881 census with his family
The 1881 is free to search yourself at www.familysearch.org or www.ancestry.co.uk
I hope this link will work to take you to the entry

Hi Carole,
Thankyou.
I did find their family in the census....
How would I find out more about Jehoida, shouldn't be too difficult you would of though, seeing as though he was an international Welsh rugby star(so google says) :)

What sort of information are you looking for on Jehoida?
There's this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jehoida_Hodges
and the 1891 census in which he's still in Risca employed as an "engine driver colliery" (Joseph J Hodges: RG12/4380/25/9)
and a birth registration on FreeBMD:
Joseph Jehoida HODGES
Sep qtr 1876
Newport M 11a 216
and no doubt much more! Depends what you're seeking.
Anna :)

Jehoida Hodges played for Newport Rugby Football Club. He was very well known in his day and played for Wales in a famous victory when he had to play out of position due to injury. He was a captain of Newport and his name appears on the 'Captains' Board' in the Newport clubhouse. There are also photographs of him there.
A couple of years ago there wasa an appeal to clean/restore his neglected gravestone in a Risca cemetary.
If you want access to Newport clubhouse then I can arrange for you to visit. I can also put you in touch with the Newport RFC historian who has lots of info.

Thankyou so much, you have been most helpful.
Kind Regards

Some info from www.historyofnewport.co.uk :
Born 15 July 1876, Risca. Won 23 Welsh caps 1899-1906. In 1903 vs England at Swansea he came out of pack to replace Newport / Wales capt Tom Pearson on left wing and scored a hat-trick. Played in Wales’s win over 1905 NZ. Newport capt 1904/5. Played 254 times for Newport 1897/8 to 1908/9 scoring > 20t. Died Waunlwyd 13 Sept 1930. Miner.
There are a couple of pictures on the site - one from a cigarette card. I bought that cigarette card on ebay a few years ago and still have it.

Hi there,
Jehoida Hodges was my nans uncle. Sadly she passed away a few years ago. Her son (my dad) is still alive, not sure if he could help.
We all live in and around Birmingham.
Percy Hodges was his brother and my great grandad. I think this is correct....I can try and find out some more info if you want?
Good luck,
Ruth
