Title: Abbey Grange, Eastham, Cheshire
Post by: fairlane on Friday 17 July 09 20:42 BST (UK)
In 1933 a distant relative age 11 (family originally from Scotland in late 1800's) came from Demerara, West Indies to Abbey Grange, Eastham accompanied by her mother (details from incoming passenger lists). Mother returned to Demerara and both father and mother returned periodically to this country. Jean returned to Demerara in 1936 age 15. My feeling is that Abbey Grange was a boarding school - can anyone confirm this?

Best wishes, Fairlane

The only mention i can find of Abbey Grange are High schools but they are/were in Yorkshire others in various other counties I am not aware of any Boarding schools in Eastham.
You could try contacting the Chehire & Chester Archive. They might hold records it was a boarding school.

Hi Celia

Yes, we're talking about Eastham, Wirral. Thanks for your help - contacting Cheshire archives is a good idea which I will follow up. I couldn't find any references when googling "Eastham Cheshire" either. I hoped that there might be someone out there whose mother attended the school.

Hi Marion

As there is a possibility that your email address may be removed by the moderators, we need to get you up to 3 posts so that you can send a PM (personal message) to Fairlane with your email address on that.

Do tell us what Abbey Grange was!  Was it a boarding school?  Is there an abbey near by?

Thanks to Marion I now have my photos of Eastham Grange. There is no evidence that Eastham Grange was ever used as a school so the reasons for my people being there will remain a mystery!

Hi

I visit Eastham quite often. I've got friends living there. If you send me a copy of the photo, I could see if they know anything about the place.

Hi Abbey Grange was an Abbey building associated with St Werberghs in Chester........ it had monks living there from way back when.............it could be the building you are looking for. It has a Monks Cottage nearby and the Abbey Grange is the more luxurious home that house monks and people from the church. Could it be they also had Nun's and it was some kind of orphanage at one time. It is currently for sale on Rightmove as Abbey Grange, Bridle Road, Wirral, CH62 if you wanted to get a closer look at it. Good luck with your search. There is a fair bit written about the area as far back as 900 ad so it will keep you busy. x

Hi Pluto
Welcome to Rootschat and thank you for replying to my old post re Abbey Grange. I never did find out what my people were doing there so this could be the catalyst to get me looking into that branch of the family again. I'll certainly have a look on Rightmove to see details although I'm certain it will be out of my price range!
