Hi all,
Can anyone tell me where Cornish Court, Neath was.
Also what was the correct name of the "Japan" works in Melincryddan.
Thanks

The Mellincryddan Tinplate Co. managed the tinplate decorating Works - founded 1872 & was known as the "Japan". hope this helps

So would "The Japan" have been where the Eaglesbush tinplate works was ?

Hi Steve,
Cornish Court was one of many Courts in the Neath area, especially c.1877. This one was in The Green area of the town, behind the old railway station, roughly where it is today. If you know Neath it was on the grounds of the old cattle market opposite where J S Jones Timber yard used to be. (I have a copy of the map if you are interested).
The Japan works, was, as listed on the 1877 maps, where the Mile End garage is in the Melin now. It was, as Nidum says, The Tinplate Decorating Works on adjoining land to the Melincryddan Tinplate Co. who managed it. They made tin containers, biscuit boxes, vases, tea cannister, trays, pencils etc (as said in the Neath and District Symposium) and stems from the decorative lacquered wood cabinets imported from the Far East.

Pip,
I thought Cornish Court was "down the Green" as my great grandparents lived "down the Green". I would be interested in seeing the map and is there any way you can scan it and PM me ?
I am originally from the Melin (now living in Bridgend) but I didn't know thet "The Japan" was where the garage is. My mother's father worked in "The Japan" and I knew it was a form of decoration on tins etc.
Many thanks for the prompt reply and I have another question........ Do you know where Texas Terrace or Row was?

Hi,
I'll send the map by PM and check on Texas Row. I know for a Mexico Row but Texas doesn't ring a bell at the moment............my filing system is a bit eratic to say the say the least!
