Hi does anyone know if this is a complete listing because i have an ancestor who came over sometime between 1878 and 1880 from USA but it will only give results from 1883, i have tried loads of common surname searches as well as just letter 'a' ect... but it does not seem to have any results before 1883.
The family member I am looking for is
Oliver Evans abt 1873 California, United States, however, he is in the uk 1881 census living with an Aunt, trying to locate his father, there are just too many Evans'. Fathers name I have been told should be Evan Evans but not sure on this.
Any tips?
Many thanks

Passenger Lists are held the National Archives: More about these records can be found at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/familyhistory/guide/.
Have you looked at the ISTG - Immigrants Ships Transcriber's Guild, ongoing but you might be lucky.
Here's the passenger list link [numbers are the numbers on the manifest]:
http://immigrantships.net/v9/surnamesv9/splgel_v9.htm
Local Papers US or UK are often a good source of information of sailings - sometimes passengers occasionally mentioned arriving. Would Oliver have traveled with his father or another family member? Which Port did he arrive at?
This is not exactly your question, but did Oliver stay in the UK if so he may have obtained Naturalisation - docs held at the Home Office and published in the London Gazette.
On 1881 Census there are more Evans next door, says (son / Head) I'm assuming it's Ann Evans son:
Household:
Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability
William EVANS Son (Head) M Male 24 Languicke Parish Of Collier
Margaret EVANS Wife M Female 24
Source Information:

Census Place Llanguick, Glamorgan, Wales
Family History Library Film 1342288
Public Records Office Reference RG11

Have you tried looking for 1873 birth record for Oliver? Should give father's name.
If father's name was Evan there is an Evan J Evans on US 1880 census:
Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace
Evan J. EVANS Self M Male W 43 WALES Gold Miner WALES WALES
Jane EVANS Wife M Female W 46 WALES Keeping House WALES WALES
Obediah EVANS Son S Male W 19 WALES Gold Miner WALES WALES

He may have sent his youngest to Wales to get him out of the rough life of the gold fields and get him and education???
There is also a single 33 year old single man in Bodie California as a labourer. The only Bodie CA I know was a silver mining town (now deserted) - don't know for sure if it was going in 1880, but I think so. If he had Oliver by a lady of the town he might have sent him home to Wales.
There are quite a few Evan Evans on 1881 census. To establish the family names, if Ann Evans is aunt, I'd be looking for an Evans marriage to an Ann from Camarthan - (around place and date of Wm Evans birth in 1857, but could be Camarthan too), then trace her husband's parents & siblings. Hopefully a brother will emerge who is Oliver's father. Try an IGI search.

Hi
thanks for your response
still no luck, really annoyingly
yes on the census it is ann's son, i have searched for the family and discovered there is another son isaac and the father is Thomas but then it gets too complicated because each search i do of the family throws up about 100 different Evans, I know for definate that Oliver' father is Evan Evans as i have Olivers marriage cert which has the father down as deceased.
old post on the certificate

I might be barking up the wrong tree, but as your Evans family links seem to be with Languick in 1881 and this is where Oliver was sent, this could be his family - Llanguick C102951
There is this:
Evan Evans
Birth: 10 APR 1837
Christening: 20 APR 1837 Pant Teg And Alltwen And Carmel Independent, Llanguick And Kilybebyll, Glamorgan, Wales.
Father: William Evans
Mother: Magdalene
William & Magadalen also had Gwenllian 1833, and Benjamin 1832
William & Margaret (might it be Magdalen) : Thomas Evans 1831
(no Issac that I could find)
William EVANS b Llangiwg aby 1806 married Magadalen THOMAS
May 31 1831 Llangiwg.
You mentioned Thomas as the father - bit confused, is this Evans father, or Ann's husband's name, the children of Ann om the 1881 census?
Anyway, while above may be a link, if Thomas is Evan Evans father, I found this:
Evan Evans ch 10 March 1822 Llangiwg, Glamorgan, Wales
Father Thomas Mother: Ann.
True, he would have been 51 when Oliver was born; but if this is the father, might Oliver have been sent to Wales because the father had died? Have you tried finding a US death record? Of course, Oliver's mother might have died and circumstances did not allow Evan to care for his son Oliver.
Although I am not 100% certain, I believe Llangiwg and Languick are the same place. Llangiwg being the Welsh spelling, which is what you'll find on the map: Llangiwg, Pontardawe, Swansea, West Glamorgan, Wales.
Hope I haven't confused you further :)

Hi
Thomas is Ann' husband, so was thinking it must be the brother of Evan, Thomas 1861 census is down as being born Llangbre, carmarthenshire.
which i think is a transcription error because to me it reads LLanybie, which is called Llandybie today, its about 5 miles from my current address. I am planning to find out where the records are held, whether they are under Ammanford (my town) or carmarthen.
I know about Llanguicke or Llangiwg, my avatar photograph is the church. So far nearly every line of my family have lived there one time or the other. Its known more as Pontardawe/Ysalyfera/Godregraig now.
lets hope we are getting somewhere slowly, typical of my family to have the most common name in wales, all my other lines have been so easy.
thanks for all your help
your advice and pointers have been most valuable
promise to keep you updated
many thanks

Hi Lorraine,
(fingers-crossed) :)
From Sacramento Daily Record Union Tues Aug 9 1892
In Time to Register.
The following-named persons were admitted
to citizenship in Judge Van Fleet's
court yesterday:
Thomas G Clark, a native of England;
witnesses O. G. Hartig and William Frieiscke.
Christian Hofelich, Germany; witnesses,
John Ruedy and C. McCullum.
William Ralph Taylor, Canada; witnesses,
George Taylor & A D. Christianson
Franz Sehafllhuber, Germany; witnesses,
John Gebert and Carl Meyer.
Evan Evans, Wales; witnesses, C. P.
Fobes and John Reese.
Peter Anthony Thomas, Wales, witnesses,
Evan Evans and John Reese.
Interesting the surnames Evans & Thomas appear together again like Oliver and his wife. (Mind you they are common, I have a Morgan in my line, so I sympathise.)
It's maybe a longshot, but you might find out about your Evans by searching these US Newspapers:
http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/search/pages/
55 hits for name Evan Evans. 35 for name Oliver Evans. Hope one of them is yours! You can download pages as pdf to make them easier to read.
Good Luck!
