Title: ? Welwick House Aylesbury or Tring
Post by: jilly43 on Thursday 30 July 09 10:32 BST (UK)
Some 40 years ago I visited some people called Sam and Maris Brewer who were caretakers of a House which I thought was called Welwick House, they lived in the Lodge. Can anyone throw any light on this as I was recently in the Aylesbury area and spoke to several local people who said they had no knowledge of this large property, I think it belonged the the Irving family.  If anyone has any information I would be most grateful.

The only Wellwick I can think of around here is Wellwick Farm Wendover about 5 miles from Aylesbury.

It is a large building and one of the oldest in the district.

I will have a look on the map to see if there is a lodge

There is a good picture of the house  at the Geograph website if you want to check it out

Thanks Barbara,  That certainly looks like the property, I know it had hugh attics.  The people who lived there at the time were named Irving and some relative of Sir Henry Irving and their niece was Karen Black the actress.  I don't expect I shall be able to trace what happened the the Brewers, I have tried to find deaths but no success, of course they probably moved from Buckinghamshire.

Thanks anyway, if you think of any other leads please let me know.
Thanks
Jill

Re the Brewers, the lodge, Wellwick Farm, Wendover.

I remember them.  I will ask a friend, who knows most people, what happened to them.

Hi Timoth, thank you very much for replying, I would be most grateful for any information on them. I am sure they would have passed on by now.  Did you know the people who lived in the large house, I am sure they had some connections to a family named  Urvine.

Regards
Jilly

Hi Jilly,
I'm pretty sure that they have passed on.  I no longer live in that part of the world, but my friend, (who can usually be relied upon to know everyone), has only a vague recollection of them.

I visited the Brewers just once, to take a look at Sam's grafted "family" fruit trees, and that was probably 30-odd years ago.

Wellwick House has a huge amount of history, and ghost stories - It is very imposing, standing on a 'cross ridge' that comes down perpendicular to the Chiltern scarp.  I didn't know the Urvines, I'm afraid, but I know that the house has links to Judge Jeffries, and it is currently owned by a nice couple from Ireland.

One other point is that, if, for instance, you were thinking of getting electoral roll extracts from the County archive, in Aylesbury, I seem to remember that the House sits right on the parish and district boundary, so it could be counted in Wendover or Ellesborough.

Good luck with it,
Timoth

Hello, it's been a while since your post but it may interest you that we (the Gallaghers) have lived in Wellwick House for the past 10 years & during that time the people who have lived in the Lodge are called the Blackhams.  I can ask them next time I see them if they know anything of Sam & Maris.  Wishing you a very happy New Year!
