I am trying to find any information on my great grand father MARTINO CIANGRETTA
I think he was born in Italy circa1869 and was married to 'ANNIE KITCHEN' in 1893 in England.
They lived in Great Brooke Street, Birmingham at the time of the 1901 census.
I can only find mention of him on 1901 census (listed as Martin Changatto)
and marriage registration 1893 (listed as MARTINO CIANGHETTA)
I am not sure of the exact spelling of the name.
Can anyone help?

Martino Cianghetta changed his name to Thomas Martin - he is my great grandfather, too! Sadly, I never got to meet him. His daughter Mary was my Grandmother! Which branch of the fammily are you because as you know - we are a big family! :) ( I appreciate this is an old post but I'm hoping you still check in as I'm curious as to who you are x

I guess your Grandmother Mary was the sister of my Grandmother Maria.
Maria married Albert Green and one of their children William Martin Green (Bill Green) was my father.
I do have quite a bit of information on Martino. although I haven't been able to get much information when he was in Italy.
I did know that Martino changed his name

The HO405 file - his application - may have a lot of interesting info in:
The files relate to individual foreign citizens (mostly European) who arrived in the UK between 1934 and 1948 and who applied for naturalisation. All files include application for naturalisation with police reports. Some also include initial application for visa or employment permit, change of name or business name and Second World War internment papers. Files were opened when the individual first applied to enter the UK and continue until naturalisation or death.

Martino was born in Sora, Italy. But there wasn't a daughter called Maria. I have a left a message for one of my older cousins, her Mom is 93 and remembers the old times well, she knew her grandparents, Annie and Martin, so will let you know what she says. Take care

Hi Oldknow, turns out my Nan Mary's sister Chris had 2 girls Gwen & Rene and 2 boys Billy & Jack. Gwen married Jack and they had a son Albert and a daughter Maria. Rene married Robert.

Yes you are quite correct about my Gran, as I understand it, was known as Chris to the family but on her birth record she was actually named Maria Crestina (not Christina). She was born on 29th November 1893 if you want to have a look at that. I am the son of 'Billy', I'm David Green and I have 4 Sisters Christina, Margaret, Jacqueline & Susan. If you want to make direct please send me a private message (PM). So it seems that you & I are related somewhere along the line. I do have some interesting information on Martino. There is a book you can buy that has a photograph of him and his men during a demolition job that his company worked on and some other information. His claim to fame seems to be that his company demolished the buildings that stood on the site of what is now the 'Hall of Memory' in Birmingham. The book is called 'Bella Brum', it's all about the Italian's, how they lived etc. in Birmingham, can't find my copy at the moment!!
Hope that's of interest to you, by the way I do remember Aunt Mary actually my dad's aunt, so presumably that's your Gran?

Hi, my name is Susie Volante. I was born in Birmingham, and now live in Italy, in the area where my Grandfather Ernesto Volante was born. My late Uncle Len (born 1927) remembered the Ciangretta family.
Have a look at Pagine Bianche (Italian phone book) for Cianchetta. There are several of that name near me, and as all of us Birmingham Italians came from the same locality, this may be the original spelling. Good luck.
