Has anyone any information re Blakeburn pit disaster aka 'Black Wednesday' 13.8.1930, British Columbia. My Grandad died at the age of 27 years after emmigrating to Canada the year before.
Any press, photos or knowledge of any good websites giving info.
Have found some but info is pretty basic. I believe at the time it was a major disaster killing 45 men.
Many thanks
Carole :)

Here is a link to another site that is a tribute to other miners who died in mining accidents in and near Sparwood, BC. Many of these miners came from England, Ireland, Scotland, etc.
http://members.tripod.com/~coalminersmemorial/
My great grandfather came from the Stirling and Bannockburn, Scotland area to work in the mines in Coleman, Alberta in 1909. He was injured in a mine accident in about 1912 and had a metal plate put in his head. The metal plate resulted in pressure on, and damage to, his brain and he died in the Ponoka Institution for the Insane in Alberta
Coleman Cemetery KILGANNON James 1873 - 1915
He left a wife and 5 small children (the youngest my grandfather was born in 1911). My grandfather started working in the same mine at the age of 13 or 14. He survived 3 mine explosions before he was injured so badly that he could not mine anymore.
Good luck

Sorry I don't have any in formation to add but my grandfather William C. Stone was called in to helpwith the recovery along with mine safety people from all over the province. At the time he was working as the safety captain at the coal mine in Middlesborough which was located just at the spot where you pass the sawmill on the way to the Merritt Mountain Music Festival.I remember my grandmother saying he was gone for quite a while(something like six weeks or so.) and when he returned he wasn't the same. She said it took him quite a while to get over it. This was back in the day when men were supposed to bury their emotions I suppose.

Hello all, this an old thread I know but feel compelled to comment. Over the past year I have been piecing together my family tree and one Great Uncle was being stubborn. I finally found a Death Certificate that lead me to Blakeburn. My great uncle Josiah Bradbury was one of the men killed in the 1930 disaster. His body was the second recovered I think, some 1500-2000 feet down the shaft, over come by Afterdamp. His father arrived in the US from England as a young boy in the 1850's and worked the coal mines in the Chicago area where Josiah ( among others ) was born. Between 1880-1891 the whole family moved to Naniamo to work the coal mines there. Most of the family ( mom Dad & 16 of the kids) moved to Vancouver about 1910 where Josiah's trail went cold. He was the only one that stayed in the coal mines.
My Brother and I are planning to visit the area this summer.
Cheers, hope you enjoy the read!

Hi,ye it was an old profile I had years ago that I had posted with originally, I had to set up a new one as I couldn’t remember what it was

Sarah, something odd as he posted that back in 2008 (previous page) yet his new post says he only has one post & not 2...or have I forgotten how to add in my old age? J.J.

You’re maths skills are fine ! It was an old profile from years ago but I didn’t have the sign in details or could remember them so registered again!! Same person, just re registered,Think that original post was from 2008 !!

Odd that you couldn't just use the original profile by just changing your password...
Too bad you were not notified back then as sometimes when the site gets busy notification can be turned off...
Not sure if this was shared with everyone, but a lovely site...I think some illustrations were done by the website owner... https://www.michaelkluckner.com/bciw2coalmont.html#blakeburn
This song is about coal mining towns, where everything is owned by their employers. Blackburn was owned by the colliery https://twitter.com/JeanyJerome/status/1442300925876441088
Also this amazing & entertaining newer version of the same song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzlT80jQ3lo

I am heading back to Coalmont this weekend and came across this page again. Roberto it won't let me reply to your message, it says I can't send personal messages on here. Would be neat to connect - my grandmother was Mathew's sister, her name was Mary Marshall. I will check this site more often to see if you reply!
