Title: Hughes Family, Coalisland
Post by: Jean_E on Wednesday 19 August 09 04:13 BST (UK)
Hello from the U.S.A.  I am doing this research for my "significant other."

In his maternal family line is an Anna Hughes from Coalisland, County Tyrone.  She was born in 1884 and at some point immigrated to the U.S.A., settling in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  There she married a Francis Patrick O'Neill.

Can anyone give me any leads to some relevant Hughes family information from Coalisland?

Thank you.  Jean E, Missouri, U.S.A.

Hello -

I have no idea what Anna Hughes's parents names were.  I have since found out, her birthdate was: 2 Dec 1884.  Also, I learned she immigrated to America in 1913, arriving at the port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Once in Philadelphia, she worked as a weaver in a textile mill, until her marriage to a Francis Patrick O'Neill.  So, far, I haven't been able to identify the name of the ship or the date she came over.

Apparently, there are still Hughes relatives in Coalisland.  My significant other's mother, Ann Patricia O'Neill (married name: Coyle) was the one who kept up with most of them until her death in 1996.

From what I gather from my S.O., Anna Hughes (b. 2 Dec 1884, Coalisland) had a sister, Ellen Hughes, who also immigrated to America, possibly with Anna in 1913.

Also I just learned from "The S.O.", he thinks Anna and Ellen Hughes had brothers who remained in Coalisland.  The names of two of Anna and Ellen Hughes's brothers were James and John Hughes. One of the Hughes brothers (not sure whom) had at least 2 children: Catherine (Kitty) and Seamus Hughes.

I wish "The S.O." had given out with this info earlier, so I could have included it in my original message.  Thank you in advance to anyone with a lead or two.

Sincerely,
Jean E, Missouri U.S.A.

Correction -

I have just found the immigration information for Anna (Annie) Hughes of Coalisland.  She arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 16 Sep 1912 aboard the ship Haverford from Liverpool.  There may be a correction on Anna's birthdate.  The ship passenger list gives her age about 16, which would have made her born 2 Dec 1895.  Also, on the passenger list her birthplace is given as Derrytresk, Coalisland, Ireland.

AND . . . it gives Anna and Ellen's father's name as: John Hughes!  Woo hoo!

Again, thank you in advance for any other leads.

1911 census for Ireland is online (free). There only seems to be 1 Hughes family listed under the townland of Derrytresk-
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Tyrone/Mountjoy/Derrytresk/865937/
There are lots of different ways to search the census (using * as wildcard, searching Christian name and age, etc.) so you might find the family with a bit of hunting.

Thank you for the great lead!  I did find Anna (Annie) Hughes, her parents, John and Kate Hughes, with a brother and sister in the 1911 census for Ireland, in Coalisland, in the DED of Tullyniskan.

There are a number of tenancies in the Griffiths Valuation in the name of Owen Hughes in Annaghmore,Clonoe. You can pinpoint the plots on the historical map and toggle to the modern map.

Hi,  I am going to coalisland in May to research the Hughes family.  My great grandparents were Peter and Catherine (Campbell) Hughes.  Both born in the 1870s.  Some of their children were James, Ann, Mary and George.  The address on Peter's funeral card says Rustie Cottage Derrytresk, Coalisland.  HE died May 23rd 1952.  any helpful hints?

If you are on Facebook have a look at the site "who grow up around Coalisland". There are a lot of very helpful members that could be useful in your search. It's a closed group so you'll have to ask to be a member.

@gaffy -

Thank you for the link to the birth record for Ellen Hughes. It is definitely the record for the Ellen Hughes in my significant other's family line. Her mother's maiden name was Hughes.

She was christened 28 May 1889 (Roman Catholic), Clonoe Parish; Not sure of the church name

She immigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, arriving there 17 Apr 1910 aboard the ship Merion, where she met and married Joseph McNally (born: 6 Feb 1885 at what is now Northern Ireland; died: 17 Feb 1948, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.)

Ellen Hughes McNally passed away 26 Sep 1960 at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.

Not sure how much research you've done in Irish records but much is now online (and in most cases free)- 1901 and 1911 census, civil records (births, marriages and deaths under civil registration), Griffith's Valuation and the Valuation Revision Books which start from the printed version of Griffith's until c1930), etc.

Google Streetview also covers much of Northern Ireland which will allow you to 'visit' places online before you come looking for them in person.
This will give you the boundaries of Derrytresk townland-
https://www.townlands.ie/tyrone/dungannon-middle/clonoe/derrytresk/

This may be your Peter Hughes-
Irish Times (Dublin), 26 Nov.1913: ... afternoon in King’s Island National School, about four miles from Stewartstown, schoolgirl, aged five years, daughter of Peter Hughes, Derrytresk, lost her life. During the play hour she returned the scboolroom with another child named Fitzgerald, and while standing ...

Northern Whig (Belfast), 26 Nov.1913:  WHERE THE FIRE GUARD on? Monday, at King’s Island National School, near Stewartstown, child of five, daughter of Peter Hughes, Derrytresk, was warming herself the fire —an ordinary open ? —her clothes became ignited, and moments she was enveloped in flames ...

Mid-Ulster Mail (Cookstown): Derrytresk National School, near Coalisland, whereby a school girl aged four years, named Kate Hughes, daughter of Peter Hughes, Derrytresk, lost her life. The day was cold and stormy, during play hour, feeling cold, the child returned to the schoolroom...

Same sad story reported in other papers. Death certificate gives her name as Annie not Kate-

I am researching George Campbell and Sarah Jane Campbell parents of Catherine Campbell b1868 (married Peter Hughes) and James Campbell b1869 (married Ellen Hughes in USA).  My Campbell great grandfather George migrated to Australia born Tullyodonnell, Desertcreight parish. Father Hugh, mother Sarah McGahan.  The only firm links we have are DNA matches to the descendants of James Campbell and Ellen Hughes.  I am keen to find more on George and Sarah Jane and haven't been able to find a marriage record though I see some state 1860.  First child I have found baptised is Mary b 1865 d 1866 Derrytresk.  Also haven't found records for deaths of Peter Hughes and Catherine Campbell on Irish civil records site.  Valuation revision books suggest that land occupied by George Campbell of Derrytresk was occupied by Felix Wallace in the time period following George Campbell's death in 1879 (Sarah died in 1875)  Felix Wallace was married to Sarah Campbell (father Hugh).  Interested in family connections and also what may have happend to George and Sarah's children after their death.  Probate in 1896 shows letters of administration to daughter Catherine.  Any help or possible clues much appreciated.    Louise Wonnocott (nee Campbell)

Thanks very much to Kiltaglassen for your help and prompt replies.  Especially for pointing me to the correct death record for Sarah.    The 1875 record was the only one I was finding in my search despite using broad parameters - other family trees of descendant connections had the 1875 death and I had checked to verify and rule out any other possibilities.  I never take other tree information as so many are incorrect - quite a number on this line have multiple flaws in the trees.  I always do my own search but hadn't found any other likely deaths.  The 1895 death certainly makes more sense.  I have yet to find the marriage record for George and Sarah - will keep trawling the parish registers for this.
I do have all the other census, birth and marriage records for the Catherine Campbell/Peter Hughes family from my research.
Thank you again for you help and prompt response.
