Title: The Middlesex Regiment
Post by: Newbabe on Wednesday 26 August 09 18:32 BST (UK)
Both my father and father-in-law were in the Middlesex Regiment during World War 2.
Can any one tell me where I can find out more details of their lives during that time,
or where my father in law was, when he got injured June 1944 in the 'North West Europe
Theatre of War'.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi

Army personnel records have not been released to The National Archives for records beyond 1921. For those records you will have to write to the Ministry of Defence who will charge a fee for conducting a search. I'm told MOD searches can take awhile.

For regimental campaign records for the Second World War it is worth reading The National Archives guide on what is available.

Dear Newbabe (what is your name?)
My dad was in the Middlesex Regiment and I have a great deal of information on his Battalion. Which battalion was your dad in and where did he serve?

Hi John,
Thanks for your reply.  My father was in the 2/7 battalion and I know he served in
Palistine, and he was a driver.  I don't know where my father in law served but he
was in the 2/8 battalion and was injured on the 30th. June 1944 in the 'North West theatre of war'
Any information would be much appreciated.

Hello Val,
Your dad was obviously in the same battalion as my dad, then. The 2nd/7th were in Palestine, yes, but prior to that they fought in the Italian campaign. Did your dad never mention Italy? My e-mail address is

hello all,  I`m trying to find out about the 2/7 Middlesex regiment, My granddad belonged to the 7th battalion kings royal rifles corps, he was transferred to A brigade support group 2/7  Middlesex reg April 1943
I want to know if he were entitled to the Africa star, he was in Africa during the Torch landings, then Sicily and eventually captured at Anzio February 1944.
I`d also be interested if anyone has info of any description of this unit, including photos etc.
In his pay book he listed all the men in his platoon A.B 64 P.T. I     the I could be a 1

I have been in touch with the Middlesex regiment association, but that was way back in 2003 when they held the last reunion and the chap i was in contact with new many of the men in his platoon but they couldn`t remember my granddad, he was a platoon sgt.

Notch and Newbabe - how do I get in touch with you by e mail about the 2nd/7th Middlesex? The forum is a little restricting. e.g for photos etc. I have photos/information/contacts for A Support Group. I think the "A 64" you quoted could be "A S.G." A Support Group. On Anzio the Battalion was organised into three Support Groups, each comprising a Mortar Comapny and a Machine Gun Company.

Hello John, yes my Granddad was in a support group, before they left for Africa they were training on mortars and vickers machine guns, I have quite a few photos myself but i think most were taken when he was in the KRRC.

Hello John....again hopefully this third post will enable you to e-mail me, incidentally my granddad was a regular in the KRRC joing in the late 1920`s and won a 2nd place in the machine gun cup with the KRRC, i have that medal, he also took part in pistol shooting on a combat style range and won a trophy for that, but it disappeared many years ago.
He used to scoff at the movie`s when you used to see the the police carrying there pistols pointing in the air, or at the ground or going around a corner close to the wall with the pistol in the wrong hand.

Hi All,

I'm new to this forum. I just stumbled across it while doing some research on my father's time at Anzio. He was killed in action there on 29th January 1944 while serving in the 2/7 Bn. He was a Lieutenant and his name was Edward Roderick Barnett. I do have some letters received by my mother at the time of his death from other officers and a member of his platoon. I don't have the details to hand at the moment but would be pleased to exchange information in due course. Does his name come up in your research?

Hello Jebpen,
I have definitely heard of your grandad, and in fact he is mentioned in a personal diary I have. The diary was written by Lt. James Hill, who was my father´s Platoon Commander late 1944. He also commanded another platoon (from the same Company) on the Anzio Beachhead, but he only arrived there on 14th Fenruary, a couple of weeks after your grandad died.   He was evidently friends with Lt. Barnet at OCTU.
I´d love to see what you have in the way of letters/photos. I have done a huge amount of research into the Battalion so I´m sure I can be of help to you, too. If you post three times, you can send (receive, too) personal messages.

Hey John
I can't Pm you yet but hopefully you get to read this.  My Great Uncle in October 1943 went back to Italy and was approached by a leader of the " Liberals" organisation to take over an organise a group of Patriots numbering around 10,000 he accepted the command.  On October 16 1943 he led the attack on a railway bridge just outside of Santa Lucia with a small band of Patriots.

They dressed up in German Uniforms and approached the bridge and took the Guards by suprise.
All this Im typing right now can be read if you go to google type in 130652 James M Ratcliffe,  it should be the first thing that pops up.

Anyway I also think that after his term with the middlesex reg he may have moved onto being a SOE (secret operations executive)  it consisted of Mi6 and all the other SIS that they had.   The only reason I think that is because I went to get his personal records from the National Archives when James Moore Ratcliffe born 1908 popped up the ref code they gave reffered to that general field.

Sorry for rambeling hope you can help and hope this info gives you an idea of where he was.  thanks John

Hello James,
Looks like I can´t help you yet. Maybe if you establish through his war records which battalion he was in, I might be able to give you some relevant information. If it transpires that he was in teh 2nd/7th Middlesex (unlikely, I´d say, given the fact he was in Italy mid-1943), then I may be of some use to you.
I salute your great-uncle, though, whatever his battalion. His deeds are worthy of remembering for generations to come.
Regards,
John

I think that my Dad, Thomas Heyfron of Kentish Town, served with the 2/7th. He served in North Africa, Sicily (I think) and Italy - He was a keen boxer and said that he was a regimental champion in his weight. He was injured in Italy and was partially disabled as a result. That sadly is the sum of what I know about his war time experience.

If any one has any information on the 2/7th I would be grateful.

I´ve just e-mailed you, Nigel, but thought I´d send a message here, too. I´m very interested to hear that your father may have served in `B´ Company (called "No. 3 Company, `B´ Support Group" on the Anzio Beachhead. I´m sure that if he mentions a few names of his mates or his NCOs/officers, I would soon be able to establish in which Company he served. Or even a photo of his mates might do it.

My uncle Bernard (B.H.) [Rob] RICHARDSON was an officer in the regiment in Nigeria and then DDay+1.  A brilliant sportsman - cricketer, soccer and rugby player.  Said at one time to have been the youngest Major in the British Army for what it is worth.    Also my Father in law William (W.A.) [Angus] WATSON was attached to the regiment as an RASC Captain in Nigeria - also a cricket nut.
Anyone with knowledge of these times ?

Dear all

In amongst my collection of "unknown" photographs inherited from relatives, I've got a picture of five soldiers on and around a cart bearing "7th Middlesex Regiment".  Can anyone help identify help identify whether this is WW1 or WW2?  (I'm sure this is very obvious, but I've no experience).  I can e-mail the photo if you send me a private message.

Also, are there any records on-line of who was a member of the 7th Middlesex Regiment?

Many thanks

Hello Doug

Welcome to Rootschat ;D ;D

You won't be able to use the PM system until you have made 3 posts unfortunately.

You could post the photo on the thread - there are lots of experts here who might be able to give you all sorts of information. Your choice of course.

You could start a NEW THREAD on the WW1 armed forces board with the photo asking for help (and that would be one more post!)

As regards online records -I doubt you will find a complete list anywhere of members of the regiment - nice as it would be ;D

National Archives and Ancestry have WW1 medal cards online and SOME of the WW1 service papers. But it is very difficult to do a definitive search just under regiment rather than a name. It wouldn't really create a list though and would be rather hit and miss!

First step is to narrow down the date. If it is WW1 and you have potential names -  you would need to search under each of those names to see if you can find someone in the Middlesex Regt.

What you have here is a pic of one of the Regt water carts held by the 7th Middx.

The x4 chaps to the right are RAMC (Royal Army Medical Corps) medical orderlies and the chap to the left is an ASC (Army Service Corps) driver attached to the RAMC. Ergo the Geneva Cross brassard. They would be part of the Home Counties Territorial RAMC

I suspect that the pic was taken in Hornsey, where the Regt HQ was for this Territorial unit. The chap atop the cart has an "Imperial Service" badge on.

The driver would be from the Middx Brigade Company ASC

The Imperial Service badge was created in 1910 for members of the Territorial Force to volunteer for overseas service.

With no other dating evidence for this pic apart from the movements of the 7th bn:-

August 1914 : in Hornsey. Part of Middlesex Brigade in Home Counties Division. Moved on mobilisation to Isle of Grain.
September 1914 : left the Division and moved to Gibraltar, arriving 17 September.
February 1915 : returned to England. Moved to Barnet.
13 March 1915 : landed at Le Havre and two days later attached to 23rd Brigade in 8th Division.
Between 23 June and 2 August 1915, amalgamated with 1/8th Bn.
8 February 1916 : transferred to 167th Brigade in 56th (London) Division.

...I would have to put this pic as pre war...somewhere betwixt 1910 and 1914 before the move to the Isle Of Grain and thence Gib

Hello!
I am looking for information about the Middlesex Regiment (1st Battalion) in respect to L/5109 Pte. Harry Mather who I am researching.  I have found his pension record and Medal Card on Ancestry. It appears he served initially from 1897 to 1909 and then from Jan 1914 to March 1920.  During his first engagement he was in the East Indies (1899 to 1905).  What area should I take that to mean?  And what were the Middlesex doing there at that time?  Unfortunately there are no details of where he served in France, though his medal card indicates he got the 1914 Star and Clasp and was there from 11th August 1914. This would make him one of the first British troops in France.  Where should I look for further information?
I should add that the Pension record gave a wealth of personal detail revealing his height, tattoos (a "Scotch" girl, a flower and a butterfly!!),  details of his marriage, and his father which I was unaware of.  If anyone finds such a record, it could be rewarding to examine it closely!

Dear John,
I contacted you a few years ago but there seemed to be a problem with our e-mails/messages, as they didn´t seem to be getting through. My dad was in your dad´s unit in the Second World War and I have recently accessed the Battalion war diaries, one extract of which specifically mentions your father. This prompted me to try you again. I would love a photo of your father to add to my Tribute to the Fallen of the 2nd/7th Middlesex.

I have a great deal of information about this man.  He was with my Uncle in Campo 5 and with the partisans.  One of the papers I have is a report from R F Parrott who was also an escaped POW and worked as second in command when J M Ratcliffe in Yugoslavia. If you are still contacting this site I can type up what he had to say.

Hi, I have been reading with interest the comments about the Middlesex regiment and was wondering if any has a copy of the regimental diary for the 1st Batalion. The reason I ask is that I am a British ex-pat living in a Normandy village called Lyons La Forêt and I know that the regiment passed through here at the tail end of August 1944 and the begining of September and I want to learn as much as I can about the Middlesex's involvementt with this area. Can any one help?

I know this is quite an old topic, but it seems to have a lot of info about the Middlesex in WW2. I am looking for information about No 8 Field Secrurity Section, which I believe was allocated to the Middlesex. Can anyone confirm this?  I can’t get much detail about my dad Alan Iliffe from his service records since it is only 22 years since he died. I know he was in France, mopping up, looking for Germans hiding after the allied forces had taken a town. He road a motorbike, Aerial square 4, I think.
Any pointers would be gratefully received!

A bit late to the party i know, but my grandfather was also in 2/7th and I know very minimal information on him as he died before I was born. He's name was John King and served from 1933 to 1946.
