Title: Wigan Parish Records Look-up.
Post by: vaison on Friday 28 August 09 11:50 BST (UK)
Hi,
Please does anyone have access to Wigan parish records? I'm trying to find a baptism for my GGGrandfather, who was born in Ince c.1830.
His mother's name was Martha, but I have no record for his father. I know it's a long shot, but I'd be very grateful if anyone can find anything.
Thanks.

You could try this site http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Wigan/index.html

I've tried that site and the Ince records haven't been transcribed yet.

Hi,

What was your GGGrandfather's name?

Most of the churches in Ince were not there in 1830 which is why the records have not been transcribed.  It would be best to look at other Wigan churches.

Sorry for the delay in replying. I have been away.
Of course, I should have said - my g.grandfather's name was Alfred Ellison.
Thanks for the info re Ince churches. I'll try looking at other Wigan churches.

Hello

There's an entry on IGI:

Alfred Ellison 1832, Ince, mother Martha Ellison.
This suggests that he could have been illegitimate, as they usually mention the father's name.

There's a Family History Centre in Wigan.  Unfortunately I don't know the address but if you contacted Wigan Council they might be able to point you in the right direction.  They may have copies of the parish records.

Good luck

The entries on the IGI are put on by members of the church and are not taken from the registers.  They may not be true and are probably deduced from census records

Hi,

This looks confusing, in 1841 Martha (no marital status given) has Alfred 10 and Alice 8 living with her,

1841  HO107/522/13  f.8  p.8  Wigan
Township of Ince in Makerfield
Amberwood Common

Martha ELLISON    35    Weaver
Alfred                 10
Alice                   8         All born in County

I found this extracted baptism on the IGI,

Alice ELLISON
Birth:  07 Dec 1832
Christening:  07 Apr 1833   Wigan
Father:  John ELLISON
Mother:  Martha

so it appears Alfred could also be the son of John and Martha :) but...

In 1851 widow Martha has Alfred 19 and Sarah 6 with her,

1851  HO107/2200  f.72  p.8  Ince  (Registration district: Wigan)
Petticoat Lane

Martha ELLISON   W    45    Cotton Weaver  Lancashire Ince
Alfred                 U    19    Coal Miner             "            "
Sarah                        6     Scholar                "            "

There are two Sarah ELLISONs born in Wigan district at abouth the right time,

Sarah ELLISON    Jun Q 1845    Wigan    21  134

Sarah ELLISON    Dec Q 1845    Wigan    21  789

I think the former could be the daugther of 'your' Martha as I found the following extracted entries on the IGI,

Sarah ELLISON
Birth:  06 May 1845
Christening:  01 Jun 1845   Wigan
Father:  William ELLISON
Mother:  Martha

Sarah ELLISON
Birth:  05 NOV 1845
Christening:  17 NOV 1845   Wigan
Father:  John ELLISON
Mother:  Sarah

So getting the first birth certificate should give the Martha's maiden name and whether she was married to John or William, or show if she was fibbing about being a widow and was really a single woman.
Maybe Martha ?? married John ELLISON then after he died she married William ELLISON. There are alot of ELLISONs in the area :-\

This site explains the difference between extracted and submitted records on the IGI,

Alternatively you could get Alfred's marriage cert. to see what it says for father,

Alfred ELLISON    Jun Q 1855    Wigan    8c  30
Jane ROGERS with same details.

Oh, I've just found this extracted IGI record,

Alfred ELLINSON
Birth:  26 DEC 1830
Christening:  13 FEB 1831   Wigan
Mother:  Martha ELLINSON

??? so even more confused :D

Hi Daisy,
Thanks for all tha. I realloy appreciate you taking the time. I guess the best option is to get Alfred's wedding cert. Then, hopefully, I can progress from there.
