Title: Can I get a Witness?
Post by: BigSlick on Tuesday 01 September 09 12:15 BST (UK)
Any chance some of you clever peoples can tell me the name of the second witness here. I think the first name is Mary. Could it be Dunnings?

Thanks

I don't think it is Dunnings - not long enough and the first letter doesn't look like a D to me.

Is there any chance of a bit more of the document, for comparison purposes?

Jen :)

It looks like Mary VINNY to me - is it a west country marriage?

Edit: or maybe VINING

I like that too - there is what looks like a dotted i in there.

My guess would be:

VENNING

Good luck with your research!

It is in Bishopstoke Hampshire. Is that West Country?

Thanks all

The next thing to do would be to try to locate a suitable candidate on the census.

I can't see a Mary VINNY but some of the others existed.  What date is this?  Who are the happy couple?

The dot on the i of William is offset to the right, which suggests that the i in the unknown surname is near enough to the start of the name as to rule out a double n coming before the i.

If you follow that, it rules out Dunnings, Venning, etc.

I follow your reasoning and agree. I still like Vinn(e)y best, I think. There are births registered for Mary Vinney but it would be good to have a date and place of marriage.

The marriage is between John Lane and Sarah Dunnings. attached is a low quality scan

Marriage certificate removed.  Only a small portion of BMD certificates may be posted for clarification purposes only.

There are Mary Viney's and Mary Vining's in the 51 Hampshire censuses.

I can't see anything else that fits.

It is tempting to try to see DUNNINGS there, in the context - but no.

So we have a marriage Jan 13th 1849 Bishopstoke Hants
John LANE - father William
Sarah DUNNINGS - father George

You need to take that cert off before the Copyright Editors see it, I'm afraid!

Will do a bit of sleuthing ...

I've just been through Bishop's Stoke 1841 and can't see anyone to match that name. Heading for 1851 now.

FreeBMD has a marriage in the Sept qtr of 1844 in Southampton for
William Vining and on the same page Mary Ann Annetts and Mary Lane

Also there is a birth in the Mar qtr 1853 of a Mary Ann Vining

Bishopstoke is only a few miles from Southampton

Any help?

Sue
