I have documents showing John Ernest Whiting (born abt 1880) marrying Mary Ellen Bishton (born abt 1887) on 19 March 1908 at The Paris Church, Darnall, Sheffield. The marriage certificate gives John Whiting as the father of John Ernest, but I cannot verify this as I don't seem to be able to find a birth certificate/record for a John Ernest in 1880. The family ran a fairground and wintered in Sheffield on Penistone Road. This is my father's family, so that bit I am certain about. But it gets fuzzy as to who my great grandfather is. I can find a Samuel Whiting with a son John born 1883 in Chesterfield and a William Whiting with a son John born 1880 in Chesterfield. As I'm not sure where my grandfather came from, I feel quite stumped really. John Ernest died in 1946 and I've been to his grave in Darnall, Sheffield and I am hoping to go to the Sheffield Fairground Archives later this month to look at the 1946 Worlds Fair to see if that shed any light on anything. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi
I am researching the Whiting family as my fathers family were travelling show people and were related in some way to the Whitings. I have some info that I can share with about them, such as obituries that I have found in the paper. My fathers mothers name was Partridge and his g grandfather had a swing boat and used to travel the fairs.
-
Hi Pat
I'd love to see the info you've got as I'm having real problems with researching the Whiting side of my family. My grandad Whiting had a Speedway ride, but I'm pretty sure that I remember my mum talking about one of the family having swing boats. When I see her this weekend I'll ask her.
-
Hi
I have a Samuel Whiting in my tree with son John Whiting , they were travelling show people and they had swingboats. Samuel married Hannah Hoult. :)
-
Hi
I also have that info, my relatives are also Partridge, Calladine, Hoult and Hallam, and some others, they are all related in some way. I have a couple of obituries for the Whiting side mentioned are the Partridge family.
I am new to this site so not sure how to post an email address to exchange info.
-
looking at your name I think we are all ready in touch through another site and we have each others emails.
:)
-
Did I share the info then??? Not sure who you are!!!
-
I will email the address I have see if its you. he he ;)

I'm still trying to trace my great grandfather John Ernest Whiting. It now appears that he came from Deptford, London and was born in 1880. Cannot find a link to Samuel Whiting and Hannah Hoult or John Whiting from the Manchester area who was a well known fairground proprietor.
-

Hi Ellesse you are doing the right thing by working backwards with your family :)
to confirm what you have
marriage in the Parish Church in Darnell Sheffield 19.03.1908
John Ernest Whiting (born abt 1880) do you mean aged 28 ?
what occupation ?
what address was given ?
father John Whiting - what was Johns occupation and was he given as deceased ?
&
Mary Ellen Bishton (born abt 1887) do you mean aged 21 ?
what was her occupation ? address ? who was her father and what was his occupation ? was he deceased ?
who were the witnesses ? this is important as they could be relatives
i wondered if Mary was from the travelling community or from Sheffield and this would help as to where they met .... possibly

Benjamin was born Jan 15 1876 and christened April 9th of the same year s/o John & Ann of Albion Street
John was a labourer
Edward aged 1 month was baptised 29th August 1894 along with his big brother Thomas Charles who was aged 2 years and 7 months sons of John & Ann
John was a coal porter (which would make more sense than a coach porter ;D ) address 28 Grove Street

Hi Toni
Thanks for all the info. this looks quite promising. If I could tie this John Whiting to my John Ernest Whiting it would confirm it, but neither the birth indexes or census refer to John E Whiting at this time, but I'll keep digging.
-
people did add names or change their names maybe to distinguish from one to another (father and son) or maybe they were baptised with one name and registered with another
this is the only John Whiting born Deptford with a father John
what else do you know about your John and can you fill in the details from his marriage certificate for me as you can see from benjamins wedding one of his sisters was a witness (possibly 2)
-
Toni
It seems that I didn't post one of my replies. The marriage certificate dated 1908 gives John Ernest Whiting, age 28, Engineer, address Fair ground, Main Road, Darnall, father John Whiting, Engineer (doesn't say deceased)
Mary Ellen Bishton, age 22 address Fairground Main Road, Darnall, father William Bishton, Traveller (again doesn't say deceased)
Witnesses - The mark of James Holmes & Eliza Ann Bishton (who I think is her sister & who married James Holmes)
The 1911 census shows John Ernest born Deptford London S.E and Mary Ellen born Darnall, Sheffield, living with 2 children in a caravan at Bamforth Street, Penistone Road, Sheffield.
-
i see the problem although there are not any other John Whitings born Deptford the time we are looking the occupations do not add up although a labourer to fairground ride operator is not a big jump , it is a completely different job for John senior but then again how did these rides operate back then ? steam ?
and no Whiting relatives as witnesses to confirm
have you done an address search for Bamforth Street Penistone Road Sheffield in 1911 ? hopefully this will show other Whitings :-\

Hi jeffgg
As far as I'm aware, Harriet Whiting married Robert West Oadley in Belper and they had 5 children. Charles West (1889-1931), Harriet West (1891), Elizabeth West (1894), Robert West (1896) and Flora West (1899). Harriets parents were Samuel Whiting and Hannah Hoult. Samuel was a photographer and travelled with the fairs. Harriet and Robert either ran or owned a fairground and travelled around the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire areas. I think that Robert West Oadley was convicted of a murder and that Harriet owned the steam engine "The Lord Kitchener".
-
Never thought of checking the 1911 census for Bamforth Street ??? thanks
-
hi ellesse thanks for the info. i was shown a photo of the steam engine only yesterday taken in brimington where the fair parked up for the winter

Hi everyone,
Looks like we are all working on different areas of the same family.
I have been working on the Whiting family tree from me Howard, back to were by the sound of things you guys are looking.
I have a few items that you might be interested in.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~brett/photos/swhiting.html
The above link has details from Brett Payne's hard work on linking a few generations of the Whitings that ties in with Hannah Hoult.
Would appreciate anything you have extra to this.

Hi, my 3x great uncles Meadows Page (1842) and his brother George Page (1844) joined a fair on a 2 year contract in 1869 owned by Samuel Whiting. The fair travelled mainly around the north of England and Ireland. Meadows Page married Catherine Ewing in 1870 Her father Frederick is noted on the marriage cert as a traveller. I have a picture of Samuel Whiting with the 2 brothers.
I was wondering if anyone has any info on Samuel Whiting or his fair.
-
My 3x great uncles were Meadows and George Page the "Giants" who joined Samuel Whitings travelling fair. I know they were in Manchester in 1871. I would be interested if anyone was able to share more info on Samuel Whiting. Here is a picture
