According to family history my great grandfather Captain John O'Donoghue was lost at sea. On the family headstone it has his date of death as 31/12/1902. I don't have any other details such as ship, is there somewhere I could find this out ?

There might be an obituary in the local paper, you could visit the County Library and see .

If John O'Donoghue was the Master of the ship, he may be listed in the Mercantile Navy List -lists all British registered ships and masters. Available in some libraries in U.K. Details on this and other records can be found at www.plimsoll.org.
Other sources which might help are Lloyds Register of Shipping and Lloyds Register of Shipwrecks. - www.lr.org
10% of British crew lists are held at The National Archives, London. The majority of lists are now held at the Memorial University of Newfoundland - www.mun.ca/mha/holdings/crewlist.php

Whilst trawling for my family in Waterford I found this post and it looks like we are related!!!!
My GG was Capt John who was married to Katherine (Phelan/Whelan). My grandmother was their daughter Anastatia.
I have only just started researching my Irish ancestors and would love to hear from you to fill in gaps etc

We certainly are related, my grandmother was the youngest daughter of John and Katherine - Bridget. I have a lovely photo of Katherine and have traced the Whelans to Patrick Whelan marrying Anastasia Hussum(or Hufsham) in 1846. Family tradition says that Anastasia's grandfather was Dutch but I can't confirm that. One of the real heros was the second eldest son of John and Katherine, he was also a sea captain and had ships sunk twice on him during WWII but he also was captain of a small Irish freighter that rescued 168 German sailors after the remains of a sea battle in 1943. If you google MV Kerlogue you will get details of the rescues.

Again according to family history Anastasia's husband was killed in a mine explosion and they had a daughter Nancy - is that right ?

Good morning
My grandmother has been quite elusive.
She married Peter Gisby in Dover Kent in 1919
They had two children:
Kathleen Emily - my mother
B. 18 Feb 1920
D. 9 Oct 1997
Annie (Nancy) C Gisby
B. Apr-Jun 1922
D. ?
Peter Gisby died Jan-Mar 1958.
He was a farm labourer and lived all his life in the Dover area.
I don't yet know why he died but I am sure that I would have heard of an explosion
I can't find more information about Nancy but I know she died before my mother.
Nancy had a daughter whose name I have forgotten
I didn't see much of my grandmother as we weren' t very close.
My mother had four children in all
Christina A b. 1945 d. 1945 only a few weeks old
Michael Peter b. 1942
Barbara Anne b. 1951
Me - Gillian Elizabeth b. 1955
Lots of rumours about the Irish family........
1.Anastatia was ostracised by the family because she married a Protestant
2.Bridget went to America
3.The family owned a coal shipping company
My daughter has found Anastatia on a census working in a hotel in Tooting London. I'll ask her for some more information if you like
