Title: Harry Leavis Medal Card
Post by: tempsford on Monday 07 September 09 12:16 BST (UK)
Hi,
Can someone help me with the writing in pencil and what it means. I assume his medals were possibly returned.
Thanks.
Tempsford.

BWM (British War Medal) returned by Police 16/3/1928.

The rest is the internal references used to record the fact. There is no sign of it being reissued at a later date, so it was probably recycled ten years later, unless you know differently.

If his papers have not survived, and you get no joy here, you could post his numbers on the Great War Forum - it might need three separate threads. An expert in the three services may be able to tell you when the numbers were issued. The ASC became the RASC in 1918. Or you could go to Kew to see the actual medal roll. It may tell you something about his RE service.

Hi,

Did you ever find out more details about the person's service record or why the medal was returned by policy? This also concerns a person of interest in my current genealogy research.

replying to my own message here; since this post, I've been able to get hold of the divorce petition filed by Harry B's wife Rosa Victoria Kidman. She wrote around 1930:

In 1916 or 1917 my husband was conscripted into the Army
...
very shortly afterwards, he deserted from the Army
...
About Xmas 1917 my husband was arrested as a deserter from the Army and sent to Wandsworth Gaol for some months
...
From Wandsworth he was sent to Aldershot and then to France under escort.

Would the above provide an explanation of the 'medals returned by police'?
