Title: David Lewis-clergyman
Post by: Dannemois on Wednesday 09 September 09 22:01 BST (UK)
Hi
I am researching David Lewis, Clergyman C of E. born Carmarthenshire.  I would appreciate help in locating him on the early census.

Residing at Plasyberth on the 1881C for Mydrim, Carmarthen [RG11/5401/64/10
David Lewis, head, 50, local preacher, b. Mydrim, Carmarthen
Mary Lewis, wife, 54, preacher’s wife, b. Mydrim
Jonah Lewis, son, 11, scholar, b. Mydrim

I wonder if someone could locate David Lewis on the 1871-61-51 please.  Thanks in advance.

Hello Wilcoxon
Many thanks for helping out.  I don't think the 1871C entry is the correct one, I tried FreeBMD for deaths of the children not listed [Eliza & Phebe] on the 81C but no matches, although there is a possible match for Anna, marrying in 1880.

The 1861C entry is a good possible with 'independent preacher' it would have been nice if they had recorded birthplace so we could say a definite match.

I think the 1851C entry is a definite, located a marriage on FreeBMD for Charlotte Lewis & James Beynon in March 1839.  If David Lewis's father was also named David then there are a few Deaths in Carmarthenshire for 'David Lewis'

Marriages Dec 1840
DAVIES  Charlotte     Carmarthen  26 689
Lewis  David             Carmarthen  26 689

A possible starting point on the 1841C with David Lewis as head of the family ???

Hope that makes sense.
Best Regards

I used Jonah as a `clue` for 1871, he is the only son with parents of the same name. Also they are living in the same place.

HO107; Piece 1382; Book: 24; District: 18; Folio: 23;
1841 Nantiagael ?  Llanfihangel Abercowin
James Beynon 25  farmer Y born in county
Charlotte Beynon 40  Y
Mary Lewis 12  Y
David Lewis 10  Y

Im not surehow  the marriage of Charlotte Davies and David Lewis - Marriages Dec 1840  Carmarthen  26 689 -   fits  in if she married  James Beynon in March 1839.

To be sure it would be best to get the marriage certificate of David Lewis and Mary ?, it might give his fathers name. Jonah`s birth certificate should give Mary`s maiden name.

Yes you are right, marriage cert for David and Mary is best.  I was using the best guess scenario for the name of David's father as a guide to the 41C.  There are x6 deaths for a David Lewis in Carmarthenshire;x3 Sept 1837, x2 June 1838, x1 Dec 1838 so it is possible for Charlotte Lewis to marry James Beynon Mar 1839.

Many thanks, and kind regards
Roy

1881 I reckon this looks OK and gives a POB for Pheobe.
RG11; Piece: 5401; Folio: 63; Page: 8

Pant Y Deri, Mydrim.
Thomas Thomas 49  farmer
Mary Thomas 40  sister
Jane Thomas 38  sister
Pheobe Lewis 16  servant b Mydrim

And this might be her sister Eliza / Elizabeth.
1881 Llwynpiod Farm , Llanfihangel Abercowin
 RG11; Piece: 5396; Folio: 84; Page: 9;
Theophillus Jones 37  farmer
Mary Jones 28  sister
Elizabeth Lewis 18   servant, housemaid. b Mydrim
Thomas Jones 38  lodger , Curate at Llanfihangel Abercowin.

IGI Submitted, so you will have to check, looks good though, especially with Charlotte.

There are lots of records for `Theopholus Lewis` on the IGI but I`m sure you know they should only be used as a guide and checked out for youself.

Baptisms.
Mary Lewis 21 MAR 1828   Of, Mydrim, Carmarthen, Wales
David Lewis 13 FEB 1831   Of, Mydrim, Carmarthen, Wales

 Parents. Theophlus Lewis,  Charlotte Martell
Now you would never come up with Theopholus  Lewis as Davids Dad in a million years. ;D

What can I say, thanks seems so inadequent when you have gone to so much trouble so don't take this the wrong way but  :-* :-* :-* Many thanks for your kindness, you have certainly given me something to work on.  So much for my theory of David being named after his father ;D

Best regards

David lewis was Dafydd Lewis in life and was recorded as David in official records. He was the first preacher at Gibeon Chapel Mydrim. He was my Great Great Grandfather and I have more details if you want them. He is buried at the Chapel along with his family.
