THANK YOU
-
Welcome! :)
What sort of information can we help you with? Do you need census/BMD/parish register lookups, or are you just hoping to hook up with other GAMMONS researchers?
Rick :)
-
Hello, As Rick says what is it you are after - and the place is Moggerhanger
Thomas Gammons married Alice Scales there on 16 Nov 1872
His father was also Thomas.
That info you can get from the IGI on the FamilySearch website.
On 1881 census they are living in Blunham with 3 young children from that marriage I would think.
On 1871 Thomas is a 52 year old widower with his 3 children, while 2 doors up the road is widow Alice Scales age 37 with her son, both from Essex
I am not going to detail this as yet as you may already know this.

John

Hi All,
It could be Thomas Gammons and Alice Godfrey, that this person is asking about.
I found a tree belonging to someone in Australia after I Googled Thomas Gammons Moggerhanger, but there isnt much information.

From the IGI available at http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true I found the baptisms at Moggerhanger of the 3 children of Thomas & Alice as you found on 1881 census
04 May 1873 Alice Louisa
30 May 1875 Frederick Henry
22 Oct 1876 Agnes Elizabeth
Were you aware that 1881 says daughter Alice was blind through sunstroke.
On 1891 census only Frederick age 16 is still living with them, I cannot find the other 2 children.

Hello Lyne; well spotted.......
FreeBMD has a marriage in Shoreditch vol 1c page 338 in March quarter 1855 where Charles Scales & Alice Godfrey are 2 of the 4 names on the page.
But it didn't last so long as on 1861 census Alice Scales is a 27 year old widow & 5 year old son Charles, living in Woodford Essex with brother in law Edward Flack & family; we assume his wife Mary Ann is Alice's sister.

I have a number of Gammons linked by marriage in my tree but they mainly come from Thurleigh & other North Beds villages, I will track back & see if this lot from Blunham/Moggerhanger could come from there.
Back to 1861 in Moggerhanger
Thomas Gammons, head, age 42, born Moggerhanger ; Ag Lab
Jane Gammons, wife, age 35, born Renhold; Lacemaker
& children Emma age 14, Thomas 12, William 9, Mary 3 & Elizabeth 1; all born Moggerhanger
RG9/995, Folio 28, Page 16
Back to 1851 still in Moggerhanger
Thomas Gammons age 32 & wife Jane age 25
& children Sarah age 8, Emma 4 & Thomas 2.
HO107/1753, Folio 49, Page 2
The IGI has the marriage of Thomas Gammons to Jane Nouch at Blunham on 13 October 1845; the marriage index is Biggleswade RD vol 6 page 101 in Dec qtr 1845
You can find the birth dates & baptisms at Blunham & Moggerhanger of some of these children of Thomas & Jane on the IGI/FamilySearch website,
There is a death index of Jane Gammons age 41 (born 1826) in Biggleswade RD vol 3b page 201 in Dec qtr 1867
-
Thomas could be the son of Thomas & Sarah Gammons, born 20 Jun 1818 & baptised 26 June 1818 at Blunham as per extracted IGI entry.
There are another 7 children of that couple baptised there between 1816 - 1836.
There is a marriage of Thomas Gammons to Sarah Speechley at Blunham on 25 Dec 1815
I cannot find Thomas on 1841 census, but mother Sarah age 45 & a few of her children (the names do fit those baptised perhaps) but the image is near illegible. HO107/9 Folio 7, Page 8

Hi John,
Thank you but it wasnt really well spotted.
In all honesty the name Gammons drew me to the post because I thought it was familar to me.
I checked my tree and I have Gammons from bedfordshire in it linked by marriage to one of my ancestors. The Gammons I have seem to be in Stagsden and Cardington though.
I have three Thomas Gammons in my tree so will check if any match with the ones you have mentioned.

Hello Lyne,
I have that Thomas Gammons in my tree, baptised Thurleigh on 23 Aug 1778, he is son of George Gammons & Mary Measures. They also had daughter Ann (1790) who married William Armstrong & someone/sometime from that Armstrong family married into my Partridges.
I do not have Thomas's marriage to Esther - do you have date & place.
Regards
John

Thanks Lyne for the info,
I do have the details of the children of George & Mary. My tree is on Genes Reunited, if you use that site and contact me I will give you access.
Also I think Jesse Gammons married ANN Bird, rather than Alice
Next time I'm in the library I will check out Stagsden baptisms to see if I can find an Esther born about 1776. Like you I cannot find marriage of Thomas & Esther, most likely around 1806.

Hi John,
Yes I do have a tree on GRU although at the moment I havent renewed my subscriptions, so I cannot access other peoples trees until I do.
You will probably know a couple of Gammons descendants that I know via GRU as well.
I take it that you also have the details of George's parents John and Rebecca.
If you are going to the library you might want to look for this.
Thurleigh Baptist Women's Meeting annual picnic in Gammons Close, now a playing field. The people are (left to right): Mesdames Dean, Lovell the Rev J C Sheldrick, May Sheldrick, Gammons, Joan Hunt, Daisy Bull (sitting), Mrs Hunt, Gale, Banes, Jefferies, Boydel, Eva Gammons.
It was taken in 1928 according to the information, I found it at the Bedfordshire and Luton Archives and Record Service Archives on Line.

There seems to be an earlier link between the Gammons of Thurleigh and Cardington.
The 1782 census of Cardington shows William Crockford age 25 born Cardington, and his wife Elizabeth 29 maiden name Gammons born Thurleigh
They appear to have married at Bedford St Paul on 30 Aug 1779 (William Crockford widower), with banns being published in Cardington on 15 Aug 1779 (Elizabeth Gammons of Bedford St Paul)
May be a complete red herring!

Hello David,
Thanks for that; if Elizabeth Gammons was 29 at the 1782 census that might make her the one christened at Thurleigh on 2 Feb 1752, daughter of J Gammons & Mary. I will look at the Thurleigh transcript this evening to see if there are any banns for the 1779 marriage in Bedford St Paul.
Jn Gammons & Mary Eadey married at Thurleigh on 1 July 1746 & had other children baptised there 1747 - 1761.
William Croxford had a previous marriage in Cardington on 20/01/1775 to Elizabeth Lavender - is there a burial for her prior to his 2nd marriage in 1779? On the IGI they had daughter Mary baptised on 17/11/1776 - is she on the 1782 census ? and baptisms of another 2 daughters from the 2nd marriage, Ann 11 Apr 1784 & Elizabeth 10 Dec 1786

Hi John
Elizabeth Gammons was described as of Bedford St Paul in the Cardington banns, so I doubt if there were banns in Thurleigh
The first Elizabeth, Lavender, was buried at Cardington on 27 May 1777. Yes, Mary by the first wife was on the census, plus an Elizabeth born 7 March 1782 and died 13 March 1782.

Hi Lyne. I have just found the Roots website, and am fascinated by all the information you have found about the Gammons name, linked particularly to Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.
My father, Walter Thomas Gammons, was born in Redbourn, but his sister and others in the family come from around the Oakley area in Bedfordshire.
Could we be linked, or are the details you have listed come from another Gammons branch?
-
Hi John,
Welcome to Rootschat, its ages since I did any work on my family tree with the Gammons, I am only linked to them by one of my ancestors my 4 x Great Grandfathers oldest sister Sarah Nicholls Great Granddaughter Sarah Franklin was married to John Gammons.
John was a son of Jesse Gammons and Ann Bird.
I dont know if we are linked or not but if your aunt and others in the family come from around the Oakley area in Bedfordshire they could possibly be connected in some way to the Gammons I have in my tree.

Hi John & Lynne
Did you ever find a marriage for Thomas Gammons & Esther of Stagsden? As I believe I found one in Northamptonshire.
Helen

Hi Helen,
No I never did find a marriage for Thomas and Esther of Stagsden.

Hi Lyne
I found a likely marriage on Family Search. 15 Oct 1806 in Whiston, Northamptonshire between Thomas Gammons and Hester Campion. Whiston is just over 10 miles away from Stagsden, and as they named their first child Campion....

Hi All
Further on the subject of marriages, this time for Thomas Gammons born 1818:
his marriage in Oct 1845 to Jane Nouch wasn't his first!
I had a Thomas Gammons born 1840 (son of Jesse) that I had married off to Alice Scales (nee Godfrey) without checking on them in the census - when I did on revisiting the family recently, I realised my mistake - the Thomas in the census was 20 years older than mine!
It turns out that my Thomas(1840) went up to Liverpool and married a Annie Williams there and I found him in West Derby with her and a daughter, Ada, in 1881 (he was a Police Constable).
But in trying to sort out the two Thomases I found another marriage for Thomas Gammons of Moggerhanger - to Mary Ann Bartrum in Cople 29 July 1839 on Steve Gibbs excellent site (would recommend it to anybody with relatives in Bedford registration district).
According to the Family Search website they had two daughters, Emma (baptised 21 May 1841) and Sarah (baptised 14 May 1843), so that would match up with the Sarah found by John in 1851.
Not sure what happened to the first Emma but Mary was buried 23 Mar 1845 in Blunham, according to FindMyPast, and she was born in 1817 - which ties in perfectly with Mary Ann Bartrum, who was baptised 26 Jan 1817, daughter of James and Ann.
It's a funny old world - the man I thought wasn't related to me turned out to be related to me after all, but to a different part of my tree as Bartrum is also part of my tree - through the Goodship family to Houghton and Franklin families and back to Jesse Gammons family again!
Mind you it just shows how interrelated families were in the countryside before the age of mass transit!
Helen
ps just found a burial in Blunham for Emma (as Gammon) 21 July 1841 on FindMyPast plus a birth for her in Dec 1839 in Biggleswade district and the family under the surname G?? with a Thomas, a Mary and an Emma of the right ages (20, 20 and 1 with the ages rounded for the adults) in 1841 Blunham!
