Title: Joe Perry/ Happy Valley Minstrels / Llandudno
Post by: JeannieR on Friday 18 September 09 14:17 BST (UK)
Hi Guys and Gals......

My son in law,is the great great grandson, of Joseph Patrick Perry  , who , along with his partner, Alf Allan,, started the renowned Happy Valley Minstrels.......

"Joe" was born in 1855, at Newcastle on Tyne, and died 13th September 1904, at Granton House, Tudno Street, Llandudno......

I have his obituary, at the time of his death. But I would be really grateful, if someone could tell me if He has a MI. He was buried, I believe at St Tudno's......

This is quite a interesting family. "Joe" had two illegitimate  daughters. Marie, who I have managed to trace, born 14th October 1891, became a nun, and NELLIE , who was named in his obituary. I can find no trace of her, but she was "In a Convent School , abroad " at the time of his death.

I have found Marie, and her mother Mary Hughes, living at Taliesin Street, on the 1901 census. Mary is stated to be "Kept by a man ! On her birth certificate , Mary was Mary Perry, nee Hughes. There was no marriage.....

There appears to have been quite a lot of gossip, around the time of his death. His wife Sarah, had,  we think, a illegitimate ? son in 1891, at Portsea, in Hampshire.

Not sure how, or if, anyone can help us unravel this story. I would love to find Nellie. She may also have become a nun....don't blame her. As I said, quite a interesting family !

Kind Regards

JeannieR

Hello JeannieR,

Having lived in Llandudno and with family going back there to the early 1900s, I know the Happy Valley and am aware of the history of entertainment there. Those were the days!

You might find that a post on Llandudno Local will get the anwers you are seeking. This site specialises in Llandudno and they have a number of people who either know about the past history, or are local and can access archives there. The link is http://www.llandudnolocal.co.uk

I have seen something about a group being set up called. "Friends of the Happy Valley".

Hello JeannieR,

The post on Llandudno Local produces quite a result, including 2 photos of Joe Perry and his Happy Valley Minstrels. The photos are said to date from the 1890s.

These were taken from a book by Jim Roberts, titled, "Llandudno". I have not reproduced the photos for copyright reasons.

Hello again,

I think "Joe" Perry was Patrick J Perry. I found him in Llandudno in the 1901 census under that name. Details are as follows:

84 Mostyn Street, Llandudno.

John Henry KITTS, head, mar, aged 41, Restaraunt and ---- caterer, own account, born Liverpool, Lancs.
Ellen J KITTS, wife, aged 30, Restaraunt and --- caterer, born Rhyl, Denbs.
John D HONIGAN, brother in law, assistant, aged 20, born Llandudno.
John D KITTS, son aged 4, born Llandudno.
Patrick J Perry, visitor, aged 45, married, Local Comedian, born Newcastle on Tyne.
Amy BLUNT, boarder, aged 27, unmarried, Confectioner's assistant, born Derby.

Do you know the name that Nellie, his illegitimate daughter, was baptised under?

Jo

I will hopefully be going up to the St Tudnos Church in the next week or so. I will keep an eye out for any gravestone marked Perry and get a photo for you if I find it. If you would like photos of any buildings in Llandudno, just let me know.

Jo, Dave......

I am so sorry. I did not realise, that I had not thanked you for your help. Very tardy of me !

Jo, thankyou for the information on the book. It is available on Amazon, so I think that will make a suitable gift for my son in law's 50th in December, specially if I get the tree done too....

Dave, if you do make it to the grave yard, I would be grateful if could get a photograph, if there is a MI.

Thank you both once again.

Jeannie

Hi
My great grandad was Peter Charles Perry who had a son (my grandad) also called Peter Charles Perry. He in turn had more children one of which is my dad. Charles Peter Perry who is still alive and well and lives in Liverpool. My dad does remember seeing a photo of his dad with the Happy valley minstrels. I hope this is of some use to you.

Hello Woodsey,

And welcome to Rootschat.......

Since I posted my original question, I have done a lot of research on the Perry's. Was your Peter Charles Perry , born 1895 at Liverpool, The son of Charles Francis Perry and Mary Tierney ?

Until you have posted about four times, I cannot send you a personal message.

I have found the other illigitimate daughter of Joe. Her name was Emily Ellen Perry, and she was born 8th December 1889 at Llandudno. Like her sister she also became a nun.

I have to say, it was a complex family, but we do have a War Hero , who was awarded the MM !

I would be happy to share any information. However , at the moment , all my main findings are with the Perry family at the moment. I do however have quite a comprehensive tree built on soft ware....even have a photograph of Joe with The Happy Valley Minstrels. It do's require some restoration though......

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi everyone,

my great great grandfather was John Perry b. abt 1863 in Edinburgh Scotland. I believe him to be the brother of Patrick Joseph Perry that you are discussing. Nice to know there are other Perry descendants out there and would love to know more information. I have traced William and Ellen Perry (their parents) back to Ireland but can seem to get any further than that...

Nice to connect with you all!  :)

Hi There.....

And welcome to the family, and Rootschat !

Like you, I have not been able to go back any further than William and Ellen. Irish research is notorious for it's stone walls.....

I 'did ' the tree for my son in law's family, and came up with quite a few skeleton's with regard to Joe Perry of Happy Valley Minstrels fame.

We also have War hero's too !

I will have a look at my tree, and see what I have regarding your John. Is there anything I can help with ?

Regards

Hi JeannieR,

thank you for the warm welcome. I have read a few things from a google search about a Perry family in Tyrone at Perrymount, but doubt our Perry's are related to them  because they sounded like landowners, as opposed to our William Perry the tailor. War hero sound very interesting indeed, my research is very sketchy and full of holes being a relative newbie!

Kind regards,

Julia

Hello Again Julie.....

I had a quick look at my Perry Tree, yesterday. It do's need little bit of a update, and I will try to do this today or tomorrow.

When you have done another couple of posts,I will be able to send you my email address in a personal message. If you would like ? I will send you a PDF of the tree as it stands. You will find that that Family History is very addictive, and very ongoing, it never seems, that you can "finish" a tree.

Best wishes

JeannieR

That would be lovely JeannieR, I have a few other brick walls in my tree so should post in the relevant areas for help! Will try to do another couple of posts today. I'm finding it very addictive so far, I am also engrossed reading about the history of the Victorian era, what fascinating times they were!

Speak soon,

Julia

Currently in Llandudno with my mother for her 80th birthday. I'm the Daughter of John Patrick Joseph Perry (deceased 2011) He told us many stories about his great grandad, Joe. If fills me with much excitement to know that there has been some research done on this already.
We were at the church earlier today but couldn't find Joes grave.
Off to Happy Valley tomorrow to take a look.
I'd love to hear from other ancestors and to find out anything further.
Much love, Lisa
