Hi,
I am looking for information on my 3rd cousin, Alexander Herd b. 24, Apr. 1868, St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland. His parents were Robert Herd and Mary Fowler. Any help would be appreciated. There are alot of Herds in Scotland and its getting very confusing.
Thanks,
Nancy

Hi and welcome to Rootschat
So that we don't waste time duplicating information you may already have - can you tell us what censuses you already have him on?
He is on the 1871 census b 1869 St Andrews and is correctly transcribed. Do you have access to the census records?
Are you looking for information about who he married and any children etc as he is the only Alexander Herd b St Andrews on the 1891 census but is shown as b 1865. Wife is Helen nee Smith and they have 2 sons - James aged 3 and John aged 1 both b Scoonie

Hi CaroleW,
I have the 1871 census (my mistake of typing in b.1868 it is 1869). I don't have access to the census records. What I am looking for is information on his wife and children. I have a picture of Alexander and 4 of his children. I am assuming its his children. It says under the picture (A family group taken at Huddersfield). In the picture it looks like its 3 girls and 1 boy. Alexander Herd was a pro golfer. He was also known as Sandy Herd. I live in the United States so its a little harder for me to get any information from Scotland.

I have deleted my reply re 1891 details as I have just had a "Google" and found an article which said he was at Huddersfield Golf Club from 1892 so he is not the one I found in the 1891 census
1901 for Huddersfield
Alexander Herd 32 golf pro b Scotland
Mary Ann 33 b Yorks West Ayton
Minnie 9 b Halifax
Roberta 2 b Huddersfield

Hi kirstyfairfull,
How much information do you have on that Herd line. My maiden name is Herd and I am trying to get as much info as I can. Most of the Herd's came from the central part of Scotland (Fife, Edinburgh, St. Andrews, Peebles, etc.)

I believe Alexander also had another son, Robert, before his marriage to Mary Ann. I have a photograph of him taken with Robert, Alec (b 1905) and Robert's son, Alexander Robert (b 1917).
The daughter Minnie on the 1901 census was his stepdaughter, Minnie Hargraves. I have some more information if you want to get in touch.

Hi impy14, I would be interested to know what information you have.

I tried to send you a PM but it seems I am unable to do so. Alexanders son Robert married Grace (Steel) who is the link to my tree.

Ah, new to posting and just realised why I couldn't send you a PM. Hopefully I will be able to after sending this :-)
Seasons Greetings to one and all and may the New Year bring you many more twiglets for your tree :)

I do have that book, well my brother has it. I found it on ebay a few months ago and told my brother about it so he bought it. Found a few things in the book but not much. I have'nt been able to find too much on his family, only the info that was given to me by CaroleW. Its hard when I live in the United States.

Hi folks, Well, here pops up someone else related to you all. I'm a descendant of the Herds you are talking about on my grandmother's side. That also makes you related to the Martins and MacNabs in St. Andrews. The Robert Herd Nancy is talking about is a brother of my Great-great-grandfather and he is the father of Sandy Herd, the Open Golf Champion.

my gr gr grandfather was alexander mcgregor herd born in fife in 1828 his daughter jane braid herd married name rigby was my gr grandmother. carol

Hi everyone,
Sandy Herd is my dads great grandfather, my grandmothers grandfather. Her father was Robert aka Bob Herd. Her mother was Gracey Steel. My father has some of Sandys things but unfortunately my grandmothers brother Alec owned most of them and they were sold by his children. My dad is happy to share what he knows as he was aware the family is also US based.
