Title: Looking for family of Patrick Taggart & Mary Mulholland
Post by: ledavi01 on Friday 02 October 09 15:08 BST (UK)
Searching for any info on the following family which emigrated to Westfield, Bureau, Illinois from Scotland (On 6 June 1904 they arrived in New York, USA):

PATRICK TAGGART was born on 4 September 1861 in Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. MARY MULHOLLAND (Patrick's wife) was born on 23 September 1865 in Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Patrick, aged about 22, married Mary, aged about 18, in Dunbartonshire, Scotland in about 1884.

They are both recorded in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census in Cherry, Westfield Township, Bureau, Illinois, USA.

They had ten children:
Patrick TAGGART b about 1885 Sco
Sarah TAGGART b about 1888 Sco, d bef 1904 in Sco
Katherine TAGGART b about 1890 Sco, d bef 1904 in Sco
Mary TAGGART b about 1892 Sco
Francis (Frank) TAGGART about 1893 Sco
Helen (Ellen) TAGGART about 1895 Sco
John TAGGART about 1899 Sco
Edward TAGGART about 1900 Sco
Margaret TAGGART about 1903 Sco
Sarah Taggart103 about 1905 Illinois, USA

Additionally, from 1920 and 1930 census info there are 3 grandchildren b in Westfield (Mary, Patrick, Margaret) living with Patrick and Mary.

From census info their eldest son Patrick by 1920 was widowed and living in Racine, Wisconsin.

Any help greatly appreciated.

All the sons are of the age where there may be WWI and/or WWII Draft Registration Cards available for them, which should give you dates of birth.

WWI card - Patrick Taggart, born 25 Mar. 1885, living in Cherry, Bureau Co., Ill.

WWI card - Edward Francis Taggart, born 11 Mar. 1900, living in Cherry, Bureau Co., Ill.

WWII card - Frank Taggart, born 16 Mar. 1893 in Scotland, living in Cherry (Westfield Twp.), Bureau Co., Ill.

On the Social Security Death Index (www.rootsweb.com or www.familysearch.org), you can see Edward with a death date of Oct. 1983 and Frank with a death date of Jul. 1986.  There's also a Mary E. Taggart who died 23 Nov. 1996 and last lived in Spring Valley, Bureau Co., who might be a match for Frank's wife.

You can check some Illinois death records here:  http://www.ilsos.gov/GenealogyMWeb/idphdeathsrch.html  There are 4 listings for Taggarts who died in Bureau Co. - Patrick, Sara, and two Marys.

Thanks again.  Found all this info but link broken to illinois death records (have tried googling it too but unable to get in - will keep trying).

Since posting this have also found John Taggart in Linn, Ohio from 1925 married to a Gladys.

Also got his ss death Sep 1985 in Cedar Rapids Linn.

V successful afternoon!

Just need to try and find the three grandchildren and try and find out who their parents were.

I found John & Gladys in the 1930 Census in Cedar Rapids, Iowa (not Ohio).  I found a wedding anniversary notice in the Cedar Rapids Gazette from 25 Jan. 1972 that says they were married 10 Jan. 1922 in Cedar Rapids and Gladys' maiden name was Sage.  Three foster sons attended the party.  I also found an obituary for Gladys that says she died 19 Jan. 1975 in Cedar Rapids.

Is there anyway to access these obits/announcements electronically (for free).  Tried to have a look for some bit sites I found were subscription based.

Saw this and couldn't not write.  I am the granddaughter of Katherine Taggert.  She did not die in 1904 in Scotland.  She didnot come to America with the family back in 1904 but came with her uncles I am told. She did join them in Cherry Illinois where she met my grandfather Joseph I. Irvin. They moved to Iowa then Minnesotat and back and forth finally settling in Minn.  In this marriage she had eight children Joseph, David, Mary, John, Edward, James, Paul, and Margaret. Joseph died in 1930-1932 from cancer in Minnesota. Maragret died very early believe she was married a man named Dunn. She then at some later date married Aaron Hogeboom and they had one daughter Catherine. Gramma died when she was 94 or 95. Aaron passed in 1979 I think and Catherine maybe 10 years ago, not sure.  Of the Irvin children the surviving children are (*).  .  Let me know if I can help more.

Thanks very much for responding to this post which has provided me with a great deal of information and contacts in both Australia and the US.

Since posting this I have found a lot more out about this family (and a few surprises!) and will PM you.

Thanks again for getting in touch.

HI lwsncrg

Just realised that this is your 1st post on rootschat so I wont be able to PM you until you have made 2 more (blank ones if its easier).

To fill you in briefly, when I first posted this we believed that Katherine's father (Patrick) was my husbands gr-gr grandmother's (Margaret O'Brien nee Taggart / McKeown) brother.  We have since found out that he was her half-brother.  As we had been unable to find her on the passenger list with the family we assumed that she had either died before 1904 or had remained in Scotland.

However, through further research and contacts I have made through this post I have discovered that she did in fact travel to the US and was aware of her marriage to both.

I believe she died 5th May 1982 in Mower????  The date of birth I have for her is 22nd Oct 1889 in Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Many thanks for the info that you have already posted and I would appreciate it if you could make another couple of posts so that I could PM you - I am unable to post my email address here.

Thanks again

Lesley

Appears you have been very busy with the Taggert family.  Ashamed to say I paid little attention growing up and now living to regret it.  You say you found out my grandmother came over do you know the date and point of entry as it's beeen rather vague as far as my mom has told me.

The dates on my grandma are correct. She is buried in Austin alongside her first husband Joseph. Still trying to find out where they married. I do know they traveled to Pa in 1909 and visited his parents.  My sister told me that gramma met grandpa taking lunch to the miners.  Sounds cute.

I am a grandaughter to Mary E. Brady (Taggart), whose birthdate matches closely to your Mary of ten children of
Patrick Taggart, and Mary Mulholland.  I remember my Grandmother Mary, telling me when I was quite young about
coming to the USA, from Scotland with her family.  The brothers, and sisters you have listed sound very familiar to the
names, and the people I met when I was young.  Sad to say, I can not offer  accurate dates or info on those relatives
that have passed, I will have to do more research too.  My Grandmother Mary, was married to George Brady, and
they farmed in the Sargeant, MN area.  Grandma Brady later moved to Austin, MN where she passed in 1970s.

Hi TallyO

Many thanks for your post and apologies for my delay in replying.  Since I posted this I have received a wealth of contacts and information from descendants both in the US and Australia.  A grandson of Francis Taggart (your grandmothers brother) has provided me with a lot of information on Patrick and Mary's children/grandchildren and a photo of their children.  I now believe that your grandmother was born on the 20th July 1891 in Croy, Cumbernauld.  I am happy to share this information with you.

If you could make two further posts to this topic I will be able to message you with my email and provide further info if you wish.  I have a lot of the Scottish history if you are also interested.

Kind regards

Lesley

My mother was Mary Taggart.  She was the daughter of Patrick and Mary (Cunningham) Taggart.  The Patrick Taggart you have living in Racine Wisconsin would be my grandfather's father.  My great grandmother passed from the flu around 1918 and my grandfather was raised by his aunt and uncle.  My mother was the oldest and was twins with her sister Patricia Taggart (Aunt Patsy).  My grandparents third child was Patrick (Uncle Pat).  Uncle Pat's first son was named Patrick as well.

One note: My grandfather, who was born in Cherry IL, had mentioned to me several times that some of his uncles where some of the few survivors of the 1909 Cherry Coal Mine fire in Cherry IL.  This was one of the largest mining disasters in US history.

Patrick Taggart and Mary Mullholand were my great grandparents. I have pictures of both of them in older age. Pat and two of his sons  were in the great Cherry Mine Disaster on November of 1909, but survived the fire by climbing up the air shaft. The two bedroom miner's shack is still lived in by one of his grandchildren. Pat raised his children and those of his sister's who died in the flu epidemic of 1919. The street this house is located on was called "Widow's Row," or "Dead Row," as all but two houses on the entire street lost fathers or sons in the disaster.
His daughter, Sarah Taggart Kohr Raulston, my paternal grandmother outlived two husbands and lived to the age of 93. She was concieved on the trip over from Scotland. She told us that it was not just the waves rocking the boat.

My Grandmother Sarah Taggart, daughter of Patrick and Mary Taggart was born on April 8th, 1905. At the age of 16 she married John Kohr and had 6 children before he passed over from a heart attack in 1936. She was remarried in the 60's to Johnston (John) J Roulston who was born on May 19th, 1893. He passed over on March 24th, 1976. Grandma lived until April 2nd, 1998. She was a fierce and life-long Democrat. She said she and her children would have starved to death had it not been for FDR and the Democratic Party. She told her grandchildren it was a mortal sin to vote Republican. And she meant it.Funeral services were held in Cherry's Holy Trinity Church and she was buried in Cherry, Illinois near her mother and father. Father Kevin Gorman OSB was the officiating priest. Three of her children, Katherine, Ellen and Mary have since passed on.

Patrick Taggart and Mary Cunningham where my grandparents.  The best source of info for my grandmother's branch is http://burlingtonhistory.org/. You start with Peter who arrived in Dover WI in 1843. I'm a descendant of Peter's son John F.  My great-grandfather was John's son Alfonse.
