I think you have the wrong Sarah, as I couldnt see a marriage for a Sarah Elizabeth Snowden to a James Cowley  anywhere.

Your best bet is to get one of the birth certs of the children, that would tell you who her maiden name was.

Plus the only Sarah Elizabeth Snowden born 1861ish was born in Yorkshire

There is a family tree on anc*stry saying what you have about Sarah Elizabeth Snowden, born London, but thats all unscourced, so would take that with a pinch of salt

Looking on the 1911 census there is a Sophia Cowley aged 49 living in Worksop Notts, and a James Cowley aged 53 living in Worksop Notts

As its a pay per view site, you would have to buy credits to look and see if they are a couple or not :-\

I have stumbled across this website in search of the history of the Black Boy Inn, Retford. I am very interested in the idea that the landlords wife died in the pub, do you have any proof of this? Also if you have happened to find out more about the pub in your research I would appreciate it if you would share your information.

i have the copy of the court inquiry into the death of Sarah Elizabeth Hill, they thought there might have been foul play, BUT she was drunk and fell off the sofa and broke her neck, this was my great-grandmother. i will try and dig out some info for you, i have not done any research for about 1 year, so i am a little rusty now, regards.
you didn't say what your link was and where you come from ??

Thank you ever so much, any help is greatly appreciated. I am looking to create a full history of the building. I work in the heritage industry myself so any excuse to do some research. Your information would flesh out what I've already found.

Just realised I said my grandmother pictured outside the Inn was sophia when I meant Sarah.  Sophia was my step-grandmother, sorry to confuse.

I am terribly sorry to have left your reply unanswered, unfortunately I've been very busy with my MA and had to drop my research. Thankfully the MA is nearly at an end so I can start again. It would be really interesting to hear about what you know about the black boy. I've just started trying to locate the court papers. I've currently got the plans for the building when all the alterations were made and a inventory from the late 30's. Would be interesting to hear about the early history of the building as records only seem to go so far, suggesting the building might have had other uses in the distant past.

I am interested to know who Melonhead is.  You must be the child of one of my cousins,
Jim, Joan or Derek Westley.  Any information of The Black Boy Inn I will answer if you tell me
what you need.  I have a picture of Sarah Cowley, my grandmother outside the Inn and also
my Grandfather James Cowley in his Morris Cowley treasured car.
