Title: John Charter baptism
Post by: tempsford on Saturday 03 October 09 11:37 BST (UK)
Hi,
I'm looking for a baptism for John Charter between 1740- 1755
The problem is I don't know where he was born although there is a family connection to Colne, found in his will.
Thanks.

Tempsford.

Nothing in BVRI. Which if he was from Colne isn't that surprising given that Colne PR hasn't been filmed by the LDS!

When, where, and to whom did he marry?

I think this calls either for a trip to Huntingdon Records Office, or if that's not possible, paying them to search for you.

Hi David,
Yes, I thought it might need a visit to the record ofice but I thought I would try here first!
John married in Cambs and settled there and I have all the details, its just trying to find a baptism.
Thanks for looking.

I have a large number of Charters from the Somersham/Colne/Bluntisham area ... most trace back to Sutton near Ely. I'll have a small rummage a bit later on ....

Hi,
Thanks, that sounds very interesting. My branch of the Charters moved to Steeple Morden.

Welcome to Rootschat!

There are no Charter baptisms in Bluntisham, which is not a good start.

I can see William, Sarah and presumably daughter Mary aged 1 living in March with his Beckerton in laws in 1841 but I can't see him in 1851. Have you found him in 1851, and where did the information come from that he was born in Bluntisham?

A John Charter from Bluntisham married Elizabeth Hawkes at Holywell in 1814. There were quite a few Charter marriages in Bluntisham at around this time, which makes the lack of baptisms curious. Were they all non-conformist?

Hi David,
Many thanks for the reply. I am not sure where I found the Bluntisham reference ( when I changed my family tree to a new system I some how lost  my sources to a number of things.) But it is not a name I was aware of so I got it from some where- will follow it up.

I have a copy of the 1841 census page- the two children were born in March. Will's1st mar was recorded in North Witchford 1839, 2nd marr in 1846 was in Coates Whittlesey and he is then a policeman. I couldn't find them on 1851 census on Ancestry but found them on a Cambridge Family History Web site at Newton in the Isle.
There are now a number of Charter bapt on IGI for Bluntisham. and as you suggested they were non conformists- Baptists in fact.

Thanks again,I'll keep digging

Tempsford - Is the John Charter bapt 17 May 1739 son of Thomas and Mary at Steeple Morden out of the question?

Hi Selina,
Well that was the John Charter I had gone with until I found John's will in which he mentions a sister Sarah, unfortunately the couple in SM as far as I can tell didn't have a daughter called Sarah and John in his will mentions property in Colne which seems to rule out the SM couple.

Hi David,
Once again thanks. It is years since I looked them upon CFH. Good to know that I wasn't imagining Bluntisham

Did you ever receive a reply to this request? I have researched back to Nicholas Charter from 1599 in SM...then Richard Charter 1607 and Danile from 1618.

I have two Thomas's, again from SM, one in 1679 and another in 1728

Hi, my name is Daniel Charter, and I live and work in colne and am probably from a branch of your family tree. I have a comprehensive network of charters to 1675 but it appears you have travelled further, ironically and spookily, with my father's name, nicholas and grandfathers Richard. Would love to see the information you have please and would gladly help with information you need.

Kind regards
Dan

Hi Daniel,
I am trying to find the link between the Charters born in Steeple Morden in Cambridgeshire and the Charters in Colne. I am descended from the John Charter born 1739 in SM, the son of Thomas Charter. As mentioned in an earlier post, this John refers to an estate in Colne in the possession of his sister Sarah. I think this may be his sister-in-law, as his older brother William Charter (b 1733 SM, d 1821 Colne) was a farmer in Colne with a wife Sarah. In his will, this William refers to his Relation William Charter who may well be the William who also farmed in Colne and Sutton and who died in 1821. In your comprehensive network of Charters, I wonder if you have any clues to the connection between the Thomas Charter living in SM in the early 1700s  and the Colne Charters? There is no evidence that Thomas was born in SM and it seems more likely that he was from Huntingdonshire.
Thanks for your help,
Best wishes,

Jeremy
