Hi - does anyone know about military regiments? My gt. grandfather was a soldier and in 1878 was based at Canterbury. His occupation (on my grandfather's birth cert.) was Corporal carabinier. Would anyone know what regiment he would have been in? I believe he was in the cavalry but that is all I know.
Thanks

Pauline,
The 3rd Carabiniers (Prince of wales Dragoon Guards) was cavalry - a possibility.
What was his full name?
Have you tried searching the PRO at http://www.rootschat.co.uk/forum/index.php?board=46;action=display;threadid=3606 (http://www.rootschat.co.uk/forum/index.php?board=46;action=display;threadid=3606) to see if his papers?

Thanks Mr B. I have send Kevin an e-mail and hope he'll be able to help me. I've also had a look at Procat and didn't get very far - gave up with it!
Meanwhile I'll look into the 3rd carabiniers dragoon guards.
Thanks
Pauline

Hi - his name was William Chamberlain. Have heard back from Kevin who thinks it was the 6th Dragoon Guards, the Carabiniers.

I've looked at the PRO site using the reference WO97.
There are one or two William Chamberlains but the dates do not coincide with yours.
Stuart
PS I am an amateur at the above site so do not give up hope.

Hi Stuart - what dates did you get? My gt. g/father was in the army for about 20 years?
