Could anyone on here possibly recommend a good site for Wisconsin research please?
I have now established that my Great Aunt, Sarah Ann Phillips, (née Rees) born 1865 Morriston, Glamorgan, South Wales entered the USA in 1907 (via Ellis Island) and, (after initially staying with her sister, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Rees at 66 Sinclair Avenue, Montclair, New Jersey) moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin with her sons:
Evan Rees Phillips, born Morriston 1888
David Phillips, born Morriston 1890
William George Phillips, born Morriston 1892
and John, born Morriston 1895.
On the USA 1910 Census Sarah is 45yrs and living with David and William Phillips at Clinton Street Milwaukee Ward 5 Milwaukee, Wisconsin , she is still a Widow. David and William are single. David is a Labourer in a paint works and William is a messenger on the railroad.
I've been unable to find them on the 1930 USA Census, but would like to try & find a Death for Sarah Phillips and any Marriage entries for any of her sons.
I should be grateful if anyone could point me at a good site for Wisconsin research. (I only have access to the UK collections on Ancestry).
Many Thanks,
Romilly.

Two of the boys have (American) WWI draft reg cards (believe they were Evan and David).
The address on their cards in 1917 was 409 Walker, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
I searched the internet for the above address and "Phillips" and I don't know if this is any connection, but
http://www.archive.org/stream/officialhistoryo00littrich/officialhistoryo00littrich_djvu.txt
It shows: John Phillips, Corp. and 409 Walker Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin ???

Hi Lisa,
And Many Thanks for looking for me.
Is there a Site for USA WW1 Draft Cards?
I tried going through that Link, but I can't find the 'John Phillips, Corp. and 409 Walker Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin' ???' bit...I don't know what I'm doing wrong ::) ::)
I now think that this pic which I am attaching shows Evan Rees Phillips, (back row, on the left, with hat & glasses) when he visited his cousins in Swansea on his way back from Service in WW1. (My late Uncle Richard Wilson is on his right, and late Uncle William Havelock Wilson is to their right. I have no idea who the ladies are!).

Thanks for the Links shellyesq, and for bringing the threads together, - (I wasn't sure how to do that).
I am finding it very frustrating trying to find anything on this family...all of my previous research has been UK based...

Thanks again shellyesq,
This is fantastic, - all that I've had to go on for years was that photo!
And I only found out that they'd gone to the US when I couldn't find them on the 1911 Census for Wales...
I do hope that some of them settled down & raised families, - it would be amazing to find some living cousins ;D ;D
Best Wishes, Romilly.

These are in the "it might be a stretch, but maybe them" category:
Wright's Milwaukee City Directory from 1940 -
Phillips, Evan R. (wife Rose) salesman, home - 4566 N. 31st St., apt. 4
Phillips, David A. (wife Celia) machinist American Gear & Parts Corp., home - 3444 N. 17th, apt. 5
-
Bless you shellyesq,
I'm absolutely thrilled at all of this progress :)
I just wish that there was someone left alive who I could ask for more info...but sadly, my late Uncle William Havelock Wilson died in 1974. These were his first cousins, & he would have grown up alongside them in Swansea, & presumably kept in touch with them. Towards the end of his life, he did try to talk to me a bit about his family history, but sadly, I was a student in the 1970's & not of the age when you become interested in such things! How I wish that I could turn back the clock & spend some time with him now :'( :'(
Such is life I suppose...
Thank you so much for your help,
Romilly.

I've found a Death Entry for Evan Phillips on the LDS Site:
Evan PHILLIPS Birth Date: 27 Mar 1888 Death Date: Dec 1972
Social Security Number: 388-05-9111
State or Territory Where Number Was Issued: Wisconsin
Death Residence Localities ZIP Code: 53205 Localities: Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
I'm wondering...can I trace a Marriage for him via that Social Security Number?
Romilly.
-
I don't think so. The Social Security program is federal. Marriages are held on the state or town level. I've never seen anything where you could search by Social Security number except for the Social Security Death Index.
Unless something happens to pop up online, you would probably need to know where and roughly when he married to get a marriage record. You might want to try to get an obituary for him - it might give survivors or, on rare occasions, a wedding date. It looks like there is a volunteer listed here under All Counties who will do obit look-ups for Wisconsin: http://www.roagk.org/wisconsi.htm

What a great site! I've submitted a request for an Obituary Look-up, - thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Looks like the first one was correct shellyesq, :D
I have now recieved an Obituary, (curtesy of the site that you recommended).
I'm unsure how to proceed from here... ???...but I guess that a start might be to look for a Marriage for Evan Rees Phillips and Rose (née Schiltz) & then a Birth Entry for their daughter (*)
? (Do I need to start a new thread for this?)

Sorry, I had to remove the obituary, because it seems that some of the people mentioned in it are likely still living. I'll see if I can find anything and send it to you via PM.

Apologies shellyesq,
I was forgetting about the 'living people' issues on here... :-[
Many Thanks for your PM, - lots of leads to keep me busy!

No problem. Glad you were able to make some progress!

I'm wondering if this might be a Death Entry for David Phillips...? (From the LDS Site).
It gives a Birth Date as 1896, - his was 1890, but the Month is right...& so I'm wondering if that is a mistake...
The location certainly fits!

Death Residence Localities

Monona, Dane, Wisconsin

I've been off looking at Ancestry Worldwide, (available in Public Libraries here now) & I'm puzzled as to why I can't find any of these PHILLIPS brothers on the 1930 USA Census. Is it down to my searching abilities? (Or lack of:-)
Romilly.
-
I realize you have the information on your threads, but if you could summarize the brothers' information please, we can have another look for you (I've been looking around a bit again, and I can't find them, either):
name, date of birth, immigration year, place last seen, occupation, date died.
Thank you, Romilly.

Hi Lisa, - this is what I've got on the Phillips brothers...
My Great Aunt, Sarah Ann Phillips, (née Rees) born 1865 Morriston, Glamorgan, South Wales entered the USA in 1907 (via Ellis Island) and, (after initially staying with her sister, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Rees at 66 Sinclair Avenue, Montclair, New Jersey) moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin with her sons:

William George Phillips, born Morriston 1892

Shellyesq on here has found the Draft Cards for Evan, David and William George Phillips; which gives more info about them.
Sarah Ann & 2 sons are on the 1920 USA Census, but I can't find any of them on the 1930 Census.
The LDS Site has a Death Entry for Evan Rees Phillips, (1972) & a volunteer from the RAGK Site has located an Obituary for Evan Rees Phillips which gives details of his living descendants. (I won't go further on this, because I know we can't do this on RC).
And so I am looking to see if I can progress any further with any of the other Phillips brothers.
Romilly.

1920 Milwaukee Wisconsin
409 Walker Street Flat 3
Sarah Phillips age 49 immigration year 2905
Evan Phillips age 29
David Phillips age 27
I'ts hard to read their occupation so I'm attaching a copy of that part of the census page:

I can't make it out at all... ::) ::)
Thanks for posting it though merjones,

1920 Census
William G is "hiding" under the lodger's name, and in the same household as his mother and brother. His age is 25, immigrated in 1905 and born in Wales. Occupation is also difficult to read, looks like Ri_ Clerk.

Could that be 'Railroad Clerk'?
Romilly.
-
I don't know how to copy and paste. It looks like R i and one more letter. "Clerk" is even more faint than the other occupations; I'm guessing it is clerk.
Unless the dot on the i is actually a dot on the iimage and it's actually Ry???
-
On the 1910 USA Census, William George Phillips was a Messenger on the Railway.
I'm guessing that he probably stayed with the Railway...& so in 1920 was some sort of Clerk with them...(Ry is probably an abbreviation for Railway).
Romilly.
-
Did Evan's obituary mention Wisconsin? Or, had some of the family left the state?
PS I wondered about Ry being railway, also. ;)
-

He died in Glendale in 1972. (Glendale is in Milwaukee, Wisconsin I believe).
I'm unable to find a Death Entry for Sarah Ann Phillips or her other sons. They aren't on the incoming Passenger Lists to the UK, & so I think they must have stayed in the USA.
Its a puzzle why I can't find them... ???
That Death Entry for David Phillips that I posted looks promising, although the Birth year is wrong.
Romilly.

I can't even find Rose and/or Celia in 1930. Without disclosing names or dates of birth of their children, does it seem likely or possible that Evan and Rose were married in 1930? (I would guess yes, given Evan's age.)

A kind person from the RAGK Site found an Obituary for Rose...from which it appears that she was the 2nd wife of Evan Rees Phillips, and wasn't the mother of his daughter.
It is likely therefore, that Evan Rees Phillips had an earlier Marriage. (I'm guessing around 1925/1926).
This family are good at hiding, aren't they? ::) ::)

Hi Again,
Can anyone on here help me with a Death Look-up for Sarah Ann Phillips please?
She was born in Morriston, Swansea, Wales in 1864, & entered the USA in 1907. She's on the 1910 & 1920 Censuses, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with her sons. I can't find her after that. Her parents, Evan & Margaret Rees, lived long lives in Swansea, dying at 90 & 88 yrs respectively. I hope therefore, that Sarah Ann Phillips also had a long life...
Based on the assumption that she lived to at least 80yrs...I'm guessing that a Death Entry for her might be round about the mid 1940's or so. I would also imagine that she would have died in Wisconsin. If I can find a Death Entry for her, - I can hopefully then find an Obituary; which might mention her sons(!)
NB. A kind person on here has pointed out that there are two Death Indexes for Wisconsin on Ancestry, but unfortunately, one runs from 1820-1907, the other from 1959-1997. (And so that makes looking for a death for Sarah Ann in the most likely timescale on there rather problematic:-(
I don't know where else to look now... ??? ???
Romilly.
-
If you look on www.raogk.org, there is a person listed under Wisconsin for all counties who does BMD look-ups from 1852 to the present.
-
Thanks for that Shelly.
I have now managed to locate Evan Rees Phillips' WW2 Draft Card on the Family Search Labs Site. It shows that he is definately the one that I was looking for!
It is completed in his own handwriting, in March 1942, says that he was born in Swansea, Wales, is married to Rose, & living at 4566 N 31st Milwaukee. He's employed by the Milwaukee Cloak and Suit Company, and is only 5 1ins tall! (None of the Welsh side of my family were very tall:-)
And so looking for Sarah Ann Phillips' Death isn't really necessary now. Although I would still like to find Evan Rees Phillips' first Marriage & a Birth Entry for his daughter, Marion Margaret Phillips.
Romilly.

Just revisiting this research…
I’ve never been able to find a death entry for Sarah Ann Phillips, nee Rees. She was born in Morriston, Wales in 1862. Married James Phillips. Emigrated to Wisconsin with her four sons after being widowed.
