Hi, if you check the igi you will see the following children born to Samuel and Ann Alker.

Mary 1828
Thomas 1824
Ann 1826
Jane 1818
Ellen 1821

The marriage of Samuel and Ann is stated as taking place in 1814 at Bolton le Moors but it is a submitted entry not an extracted one.  There may be a couple of other children before Jane in 1818 I guess.

The name Alker is very common in the Wigan area so it's quite tricky.  R.

Had Samuels father been married twice? Just going off  Ellen Arrowsmiths year of birth.

Hi Dotty,
I really couldn't say if Samuels father had been married twice, but I see what you mean.

There is not a big distance between Bolton & Wigan,so it may be possible to find another marriage within those areas.

There is a marriage 1761 at Wigan [IGI] if that is correct their birth years are somewhat out.

Hi Dotty,

You are right the ages of James Alker & Ellen Arrowsmith are a bit out if the 1761
marriage is correct.
Goodness knows where we go from here.
Thank you anyway for your time & trouble.

Regards
Betty

Have you had the wills looked at.It looks like James and Ellen may have lived in Ince in Makerfield ,there are wills showing for James in 1803 and Ellen 1811.There is another James in1774[Could be the generation earlier]I am hoping to go to the LRO on Tuesday if you want me to take a look.

Hi Dotty,

I am sure that you are on the correct James & Ellen & I have just found the marriage of their son Samuel in Bolton & it says he was a Farmer from Ince.
I haven't considered the wills but as I live in Spain the LRO is now out of my travelling distance so it would be lovely if you would be able to look when/if you go to the LRO.

Cheers

Betty

James Alker will dated 21/10/1774 mentions
Wife Elizabeth
Children James Arthur Thomas Betty William and Jane,in it he states the last two were unmarried

James Alker of Ince will dated 28/1/1803 mentions
Wife Ellen
sons William Thomas Arthur Edward and Samuel
daughter Mary wife of John Lord innkeeper of Wigan
daughter Ellen
daughter Ann wife of William Dawber of Abram

Ellen's will I think was dated 1811 will confirm later
Mentios "her children" but her son John was named as execotor which I found strange because he hadn't been named in the fathers will unless I have overlooked it,

Are you still looking for the children of James ALKER and Ellen ARROWSMITH? I have this information.
They married 20 Aug 1761 and had at least ten children:
James (c 1762), Mary (c 1766), John (c 1770), William (c 1772), Arthur (c 1774), Ellen (c 1777), Ann (c 1779), Thomas (c 1781) Samuel (c 1783), Esther (c 1784).

father James ALKER (c 7 Oct 1744) is the son of Edward ALKER and Mary ATHERTON.

I am descended from Samuel ALKER (c 30 Mar 1783) and Ann HALLIWELL (b Abt 1793)

I think I got the wrong end of the stick on my last reply. I gave you the previous generation to the one you asked for.  Samuel ALKER (c 30 Mar 1783 and Ann HALLIWELL (b abt 1793) had eleven children.
They were James (1815), William (1816), Jane (1818), Ellen (1821), Thomas (1824), Ann (1826) Mary (1828), Ann (1831) Samuel (1833), Elizabeth (1835), and John (1838).

I am descended from James (1815) who farmed Sledbrook Farm and married Margaret KILSHAW (nee TABERNER), a widow who already had several children.
