Title: Thomas Rogers b Llansilin d Llangedwyn help please!
Post by: Capt America on Tuesday 03 November 09 00:29 GMT (UK)
Thomas Rogers b Llansilin (I thought 1813) and his wife Ann b Llanfylin worked for the great hall at Llangedwyn. I have found their grave in Llangedwyn church yard plot c96 with the following inscription: Ann Rogers died Sept 8th 1889 aged 66 Thomas Rogers died Dec 20th 1895 aged 85.

I can't get any further back through census records, can anyone help me with a parish look up? I think Ann is Thomas' second wife because of the age difference in their children over the census records. I would be grateful for any help.

Steve.

Hello Capt,

BMD has 2 marriages in Llanfyllin as follows:

December quarter 1845 Thomas ROGERS to Ann THOMAS. Volume 27, page 143.

March quarter 1847 Thomas ROGERS to Ann VAUGHAN. Volume 27, page 117.

Ann born c 1823 so looking at c1843+ for a marriage. I should think there was a previous marriage as you say.

Jo

Hello again,

The IGI has a Thomas ROGERS born Llansilin and baptised 20/04/1818, son of Joseph ROGERS and Mary.

I appreciate the dates don't match.

Hi

It looks as if Thomas was born circa 1810.

I have the earlier Llansilin Parish records (pre-1813) but I'm away at the moment. If you could PM me at the weekend and remind me, I could look them up.

Regards

Thank you so much Jo. I know the dates don't seem to match but Thomas' age varies over the census records too.

I had an approximate dob of 1813 based on his ages given in the census'. His tomb stone indicates that he was at least 3 years older. The town ship of Llansilin is tiny but in your experience could there have been 2 Thomas'? Or were people really so loose with their dob all those years back?

Once again thank you so much with your help.

Steve.

Thanks so much Gadget, I will PM you. I tried to post a photo I took of Llangedwyn Churchyard and the tombstone, but I couldn't.

Hi Steve

Don't know if this will help or not, but there's a few ROGERS' Wills on the National Library of Wales website including one of a Thomas Rogers, Llansilin, 1807 where he mentions his son and grandson, both called Thomas.

Shortened link is: http://tiny.cc/VWOM2

Best wishes

Hello Steve,

This is the first chance I have had to reply to your query. I wouldn't like to say whether there could have been more than one Thomas Rogers in Llansilin. For total accuracy, I would assume that there could be more than one and aim to identify "your" Thomas if possible.

More often than not, it is impossible to be 100% certain in these cases. My 4xgt grandmother was Mary Williams born c1790 in Ysceifiog. When I looked at the Parish Registers there were 4 people with the name of Mary Williams baptised there around then. No way of ever knowing which one it was.

I suspect that people didn't know their exact date of birth accurately in those days. I have found many instances where ages have been recorded at death incorrectly. Also, on the census returns where ages seem to vary with each one. May be people didn't know the dates well, no calendars etc then.

You may be luckier, see what Gadget can find.

I checked the Llansilin registers yesterday and there are no baptisms for a Thomas Rogers 1805-1812.  The later baptisms are on the IGI. As far as I recall the non-conformist registers are thin on the ground for Llansilin (I'm stuck with one of my Roberts ancestors here  :(  )

I've been looking at his age on various censuses:

1851- 38 (b.c. 1813)
1861- 48 (BC 1813)
1871 - 58 (bc 1813)
1881 - 69 (bc.1812)
1891 - 80 (b.c. 1811)

Can't pinpoint him on the 1841 at the moment - do you have him, Steve?

There also appears to be a Thomas Rogers bc. 1811 married to a Mary on a few of the cenuses which adds the the confusion - not sure yet if he's  the same one but I think he's different.

I think the best thing is to try to obtain birth certs for one of more of the children and get Ann's maiden name and then find a marriage and hope it gives details of their parents.

I'll check the Llangedwyn records now.

That certainly looks like then, Paul  :)

Thanks ever so much - I knew that I could rely on you  :-*

The Rh??las will probably be Rhiwlas - a small township in the parish of Llansilin.

I think Steve will be overjoyed!

I am indeed overjoyed because Nelly Leicester in her post gave me a link to a will from 1759 which was Thomas Rogers living in Rhiwlas, there is also a will from 1807 of Thomas Rogers living at Rhiwlas.

I am overwhelmed by the help I have recieved. Thank you very very much.

HI Everyone,

I am a bit late getting to this very helpful post!
Also a descendant of this family (Hi Steve) - are these children of Thomas and Ann born in Llangedwyn? baptised there? does anyone have any DOB or middle names?
My husband and I are visiting that part of Wales for 2 days in June (from Australia) and would love to visit the right churches etc.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Libby

It certainly looks as if the children were born Llangedwyn.  From Paul's posting:

I've  just checked on the baptism of Mary, 1847. Their residence is given as Tanydderwen, Llangedwyn.

It's a lovely part of the Welsh borders, Libby. I spent a lot of time there.  I hope you and your husband have a really good visit.

I'm desperately trying to gather info before we leave, I don't want to miss anything important and find out later it was 15 minutes away!

Do you recommend the Denbighshire records as the best place for me to search?

Suggest you use FindMyPast for most of the BMD records as it has the Welsh records and some of the Shropshire ones, though some errors in the indexing. My parish record booklets were purchased from Clwyd FHS.

Denbighshire records would be your main source but also Shropshire (part of Llansilin was in Shropshire!) and Montgomeryshire.

Familysearch has links to many of these records on FindMyPast, so that would be a possible first search.

Wills and newspapers are online on the National Library of Wales site.

If you do have any queries, just ask  :)
