Looking for a photograph or any information on the old picture house that one stood 9in Eldon nr Bishop Auckland, i believe it was on the site of what is now a garage think its called dene valley garage or something like that. thanks
-
I have a archive of photos of Eldon and surroundings. (over 1400 images)
The cinema was turned into a garage, and I have asked about photos of the garage, some of the details of the cinema were not removed when it was a Garage (used I think by Mr Clark the funeral director).
Yes it is now a garage for dene valley community buses.
Regards Colin

Hi Colin
Is your 'archive' accessible anywhere?
My family lived in & around Eldon & i'd be very interested in seeing some old photos of the area.
Cheers
Jay

I have looked for Eldon photos on many local websites and county archives. Bishop Auckland, Shildon, Durham Records Office but Eldon does not seem to feature.
I have photos from before 1900 and originally collected only to 1950, but since the major changes to the valley after category 'D' I now hold some into the 1980s.
I cover all of the Dene (Dean) Valley from South Church to Old Eldon including Close House, Gurney Valley, Black Boy, Auckland Park, Coundon Grange, Windlestone, Lord Eldon's Estate, Busty bank and part of Shildon.
Subjects are :- Everything !
Categories are :- People, Groups, Football, Mining, Swimming, Brickworks, Old Eldon, Buildings, Streets, Scouts, Churches, Views, Maps (1700s to 1930), Plans, Vicars, Transport, Railways.
If you have any specific interests PM me.
I am looking for a suitable local site for my digital collection, so that it is accessable to anyone with local interests.

I have a 1924 map showing the Cinema location.
I also have the High St 1910, but cinema is out of sight around a slight bend. Railway cottages which were opposite the Cinema are very clear.
In 1931 the WMC turned its top floor into a Cinema with a capacity in the hundreds. I guess it would have caused the demise of the High St one.
I have scans of the WMC extension showing the inside and the entrance of the Cinema.
You will need to PM me if you want them sent.

Always looking for more pictures, maps, history in and around Dene Valley.
Auckland Park, Grange Hill, Canny Hill, Coundon Grange, Close House, Gurney Valley, Eldon Lane, Eldon, Old Eldon, Close House, Bridge Place, Coronation, South Church, Middridge, Howlish.

The first picture house was I believe started by a photographer, I would love to find his photographic archive - I may have some photos by him ?
Unfortunately he died less than ten years later.
A local anecdote, told to me recently at the last 'Images of Eldon' exhibition.
The hierachy of the church told Rev. Gray that they had found out that after Evening Prayer 'some' members of the congregation had been going to the Cinema. So at the following service, the vicar mentioned in his service that he had been made aware of this.
After the service he headed off to the Cinema and watched the film.
Truly a man of the people !
This vicar was the only one to die in service and he was that well loved by the locals (of any religous group) that the Lych Gate was constructed as a memorial to him.

I have a colour photo of the road to Bridge Place, with the Old Garage/Cinema on the right hand side before it was demolished.
The Roof line is unusual, probably because of its origin as a Cinema.
I will post the photo later.
Colin
-
Hi, are you still posting the photo?
-
Sorry for the delay, I've been scanning and printing in all my free time from 2 weeks before the exhibition until at least another week. Only checking my emails once a week.
Cannot find attachment method.

There is a photo and some notes regarding the old cinema/garage at Eldon in the 'Echo Memories' supplement that is included with todays 'Northern Echo'.
Wearsider.

Thanks, I had not been told about the article, 4 of the photos and some of the info was supplied by me.
I have also discovered that photographer's (cinema owner?) wife was not a native of Eldon, but came from the vicinity of Whitby. Her father and the family were called Park and must have moved just after 1901 to the Eldon area.
Still looking for more info.

The first picture house was I believe started by a photographer, I would love to find his photographic archive - I may have some photos by him ?
Unfortunately he died less than ten years later.
He was Called Joseph Edward Huntrods and was married to a A lady names Rachel Park.
Joseph Came from Marske, near redcar, but spent most of his life in Brotton, near saltburn (where I'm from).
He was originally a miner but after having an accident where he was badly crushed he took up photography and operated a studio out of the back of his parents sweet shop. (He took some of the very first pictures of the transporter bridge)
He opened the first picture house in Brotton, (just a marquee type tent, really)
He married Rachel, who was from Eldon. and shortly after moved to eldon where he opened the picture house there too, he died in the early 1900's.
my reason for trying to find information about him is that, i run a website about the history of village of brotton where i'm from,( even though i now live in co durham.)
A large number of the old photographs i have were taken by him, therefore i thought it only fitting to add a page about him to my website.
Hence, the reason i have been searching for info about the picture house/cinema as there is no surviving info or pictures of the one in Brotton.
Also I would like to find out if he is buried in Eldon as i have not been able to find burial records to suggest where he is, his family dont know either, so it would be great to pass info on to them.
thanks

would it be possible to maybe post a pic of the cinema or to email me one, i missed the post that it was in the northern echo as i was away at xmas.
I have some photographs of mr huntrods and his wife rachel, also some of the park and huntrods familes, I have quite a number of photographs that were taken by him if you would like to see any of them.
-
The photos I sent were of Eldon Buses. I tagged on a request for anything about the early Cinema and the colour photo I sent to you. Chris Lloyd published the photo and the request for info - nothing back yet. Someone at my last exhibition said he was related to a Park who had been a cinema manager - but that was before I knew the wife's maiden name !
Best wishes Colin

I would like to see you collection of Huntrods photos.
I live in Bishop Auckland. You have my email address if you would like to send photos or contact me in more detail.

Many thanks for replying, Colin. It's much appreciated. Is there any possibility you could scan a few 'choice' photos, with a wee description attached please?
We intending being at the exhibition, but need the owners permission to take a photo of the 'photo'! And then the quality after print will be poor. Scanned copies, so we can upload is much improved; even on old photos. We're very keen to devote at least 1-2 pages of our new magazine to the history of the area, and pix are a grand eye catcher.
Our aim is to set up, print and deliver the first 'Valley News' issue in October, probably a few days after the church exhibition. We hope this will be a grand time/place to chat with folk who can recount their memories to us.
We are publishing on a free basis for the local community; delivered by volunteers to homes and we will be reliant on advertising and goodwill to succeed!!
We feel to suceed in the future, we need to remember and celebrate the past, so any help/stories/pix will be much appreciated.

The picture house was opposite Railway Cottages on the main road.
